Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior, or simply Marcelo (born May 12 1988 in Rio de Janeiro), is a Brazilian football Defender. He started playing futsal at the age of 9 and by the age of 13 he was on the books of Fluminense. He comes from a very poor background and even considered quitting football, but his club considered him as one of their 'Crown Jewels' and ensured that he continued playing football. He recently signed for Real Madrid.
He scored on his Brazil debut against Wales, he picked up the ball just outside the Wales box and shot for a traditional Brazilian left back goal. He has been tipped to be the natural successor for Roberto Carlos for both club as well as country.
On Sunday October 22 2006, the agent of Fluminense wing-back revealed the teenager is on his way to Real Madrid. His agent Reinaldo Pitta declared: "The conditions are complete because the transfer will be made officially tomorrow. Only minor details are now lacking." [1]. Reports suggest Real will pay £4.3 million / 7 million Euro and Marcelo will sign a 7 year contract (until 2013). Joining Real Madrid in the January Transfer Window, Marcelo made his debut as a substitute in the 2-0 defeat against Deportivo La Coruña[2].
On his arrival, Club President Ramón Calderón said ""He is an important signing for us. He is a young player who will inject some freshness into the side and is part of our plan to bring younger players into the squad. We're very happy because he's a pearl that half of Europe wanted."
Marcelo does not have an EU passport. Hence he is expected to spend the second half of the season in Madrid's youth team, second division Real Madrid Castilla, to aid his transition to European football.
