These defensive operations over enemy territories were not carried out in Japanese occupied lands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Southeast Asia, Chinese-held lands or northern areas among the Japanese allies, such as the Wangching Wei Reformed Government, Mengchiang and Manchukuo.

The Battle of Japan refers to all air-naval, air-land and air-to air conflicts in and around the territory of the Empire of Japan during World War II. The Battle included an air defense programme, involving the Japanese Army Air Force and Air Service, and the use of fighter interceptors and anti-aircraft guns on both the outer and inner Japanese-owned islands.

Firsts Period of Enemy Incursion (1938-1944)

  • February 1938 (Chinese Taihoku airstrike)
  • James Doolittle Operation during April 1942, amongst other minor air strikes
  • November 20-23, 1944 (American air operations against Marshalls in South Pacific Mandate)

Second Period of Enemy Incursion (1944-1945)

  • Next American air operations in Carolinas, Palau and Marianas in South Pacific Mandate
  • American air attacks to Iwo Jima and other Japanese islands
  • American and British air strikes to Ryu Kyu islands
  • American air incursions in Chisima (Kurils), Taiwan, Chosen, Kantogu (including S.M.R. Railway zone)
  • First Boeing B-29 air attacks against Yawata government factories in Kyushu from Chengtu in Chinese lands (1944)
  • Other American air-naval operations against Japan Proper (Kyushu, Shikoku, Honshu and Hokkaido)
  • Frequent B-29 air attacks from Saipan and Tinian islands in Marianas to metropolitan areas, including the "Battle of Tokyo"
  • American night raids against Japanese cities
  • Russian Air Force attacks against Japanese forces in Kuriles, Chosen and Kantogun during August-November 1945.
