Park Jae-chan (Korean: 박재찬; born December 6, 2001), also known mononymously as Jaechan (Korean: 재찬), is a South Korean singer-songwriter and actor. He is a member of the K-pop boy group DKZ, formed by Dongyo Entertainment, and their first sub-unit DONGKIZ I:KAN. As an actor, he is best known for his portrayal of Chu Sang-woo in the web novel-adapted drama series Semantic Error.

Early life

Jaechan was born and raised in South Korea. He was born on December 6, 2001, in Daegu, South Korea. He graduated from Mokwoon Middle School.[1] Jaechan also won a composition contest hosted by the Korean Arts Conservatory with the keyboard.[2] It is known that he also has an older brother.[3]

Career

Pre-debut

Jaechan, as a member of DONGKIZ (presently DKZ), together with other four members - Wondae, Kyoungyoon, Munik, and Jonghyeong were trainees between one and three years.[4] In August 2018, they initiated promotional activities which included uploading dance covers in Dongyo Entertainment's YouTube channel and busking.[5] The members also did covers, with Jaechan doing a vocal cover of 고양이송, known as Learn to Meow.[6][7] Jaechan together with DONGKIZ members performed at the HEC Korea Concert in Thailand.[8] They also released a Minneapolis sound-based pre-debut single entitled Nom on November 21, 2018[9] and performed at the charity concert for Palu, Sigi, and Donggala wherein the proceeds were donated to victims of the 2018 Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia.[10]

2019 - 2021

On April 24, 2019, Jaechan officially debuted as a member of DONGKIZ (DKZ).[11] DONGKIZ officially debuted with the release of their album, DONGKIZ On The Block, with "Nom" as the lead song.[12] On July 22, 2021, DONGKIZ released their second single album BlockBuster,[13] followed by a dance-pop digital single "Dreaming You" on September 11, 2019, dedicating it to their fans.[14] The group released their first mini-album Dongky Town and accompanying disco-EDM single "Fever" on November 6, 2019.[15]

DONGKIZ came back with the funk single "All I Need Is You", marking Kyoungyoon's return to the group.[16] They also released an old-school hip hop-dance single "Lupin."[17]

On July 7, 2020, Jaechan together with fellow member Munik formed DONGKIZ I:KAN, a sub-unit of DONGKIZ. The group debuted with a single album "Y.O.U".[18]

The group has been continuously releasing several albums such as Ego,[19] Youniverse,[20] and Chase Episode 1. Ggum[21] until the end of 2021.

2022 - present

On January 12, 2022, South Korean streaming television series Watcha has announced Park Jae-chan to take the lead role in the live series adaption of Semantic Error, based from a popular South Korean web novel of the same name. Jaechan starred as Chu Sang-woo, alongside former KNK member Park Seo-ham as his character’s love interest Jang Jae-young.

On March 18, 2022, Dongyo Entertainment released an official announcement of the group's rebranding and significant line-up changes. Dongyo announced Wondae's departure from the group due to ongoing health issues and revealed its plans to rebrand the group and add three new members to its lineup. Jaechan continues to stay in the group as Dongyo entertainment reveals the rebranding of DONGKIZ into DKZ in a fancafe post. On March 28, 2022, Sehyeon, Mingyu, and Giseok were introduced as new members of the group.

DKZ released their sixth single album Chase Episode 2. Maum on April 12, 2022.[22] The group's comeback and rebranding have been considered a success[23] and Jaechan was included in Forbes Korea's 2022 Korea Power Celebrity 40 - Rising Star for the attention he gained for his portrayal in Semantic Error.[24]
