Barbora Krejčíková was the defending champion,[1] but lost in the first round to Diane Parry.[2]

This marks the first major where Iga Świątek is competing as the world No. 1. She is currently on a 28-match winning streak dating back to Doha in February, the longest unbeaten run on the WTA Tour since Serena Williams in 2013.[3]

Angelique Kerber is attempting to complete the career Grand Slam.

This is the first French Open since 2011 to feature neither Venus Williams nor Serena Williams.
