University High School is a high school located in Morgantown, West Virginia that houses over 1,500 students. The school mascot is the hawk and the school colors are crimson red, old gold, and white.

History

University High School was established as University Demonstration High School in the fall of 1925. The first location was at the corner of Spruce and Willey Streets. In 1928, the school moved to the third and fourth floors of a building on the corner of Stewart St. and University Ave. In 1930, construction on an official school building for University Demonstration High began. In 1931, the school moved to the old library on the West Virginia University Campus until 1933 when the official school building was finished. It was and still is located at the top of North Price St. In 1972, the university turned UHS over to the Monongalia County Public School System which is when major renovations started taking place such as the addition of a gymnasium, an annex, etc. In 1991-1992, there was more renovation which added a tower to the building, a new cafeteria, etc. This was around the same time when Preston High School was established and over 100 Bruceton High students transferred to University High School. In 1993, ninth graders were added to the student body. Several trailers were brought to UHS following this to acquire the much needed extra space for the crowded school.

Future

One problem with University High School today is not only that the building is 74 years old, but it was only built to house 500 students. This means that University High has 1,000 students too many in an old building. This is why a new University High School is being built near Baker Ridge Road on the other side of Morgantown. It should be complete August 2007.
