Owho soup is a soup taken in the south-central region of Nigeria. it is common among ethnic groups such as urhobo, benin-bini ,itsekiri, ijaw etc. The soup is made with garri soaked in water after palm oil and potash mixture has been added.[1]

Origin

There is no clear fact where the soup originated from. However according to history, the soup is either from the urhobo people or Bini people. Owho soup is commonly taken in Delta State as well as Edo state where the two tribes are more populated.[2]

Preparation

To make the yellow soup, There is need to have fish, Banga oil, beef, crayfish,palm oil,potash amongst others on ground.[3]

  • Pour palm oil in a pan after removing remove bones in the fish, mix potash with a bit of water and add the mixture into the semi-bleached oil, stir until yellow and thick.
  • After boiling the fish or meat  for few minutes ,then blend the garri until smooth
  • Gradually add the garri just after soaking, put other ingredients such as crayfish and cook under low heat .
  • Add small quantity of water while ensuring the spices are in right amount, the soup is ready when there is floating oil on top of the soup. Also the garri dissolves completely.[4]

Caution

Do not cover the pot again from when the potash is added to prevent over-boiling, also to avoid metallic taste. Use small amount of potash, also ensure to soak the garri to soften else there will be lump in the soup which might be stressful to remove.[5]

Other foods

It can be taken with owho soup with boiled yam, boiled plantain or eaten alone.[6]
