Matthew "Matt" Walsh (born June 18, 1986) is an American conservative political commentator.[2][3][4] He hosts The Matt Walsh Show podcast on The Daily Wire. Walsh has written three books. In 2022, he starred in The Daily Wire documentary What is a Woman?.

Career

Walsh began his career as an AM talk radio host in Delaware and then moved to Lexington, Kentucky, with NewsRadio 630 WLAP in 2012.[5][6] He worked for The Blaze TV starting in October 2014.[7] He was also a contributor to HuffPost.[8] He began writing for The Daily Wire in October 2017.[9][10][11] Additionally, he has appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight,[12][13][14] The Ingraham Angle,[15] Fox and Friends,[14][16][17] and Dr. Phil.[18]

Walsh has written three books: The Unholy Trinity: Blocking the Left's Assault on Life, Marriage, and Gender (2017), Church of Cowards: A Wake-Up Call to Complacent Christians (2020) and Johnny the Walrus (2021).

Views and controversies

Walsh opposes same-sex marriage[19] and transgender rights.[20][21] He has compared gender-affirming care for children to molestation and rape.[22] He has argued against paid paternity leave for men[23] and that Kyle Rittenhouse's trial was malicious prosecution.[24] He has espoused the Great Replacement conspiracy theory.[25] He has argued in favor of restricting pornography.[26] After the children's show Sesame Street released a video encouraging childhood vaccinations, Walsh called Big Bird a "drug dealer" and described the voice "like a child molester". [27]

His commentary is sometimes described by media outlets as trolling.[4] In his Twitter profile, he has labeled himself a "theocratic fascist" as "an obviously sarcastic joke"[28][non-primary source needed] among other self-descriptions.[29][30]

Transgender issues

In January 2022, Twitter suspended Walsh's account for violating its policies on hateful content, after he tweeted what Twitter deemed offensive speech against the transgender community.[31]

He rented an apartment in Virginia for one day in 2021 to qualify to speak out against the Loudoun County School Board for allowing transgender students the use of restrooms matching their gender identity.[32] In May 2021, Walsh called doctors who perform gender-reassignment surgeries for transgender youth "plastic surgeons basically acting like Leatherface from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre."[20]

Walsh's bestselling children's book Johnny the Walrus drew criticism for allegorically comparing being transgender with identifying as a walrus. It was the best-selling LGBT+ book on Amazon in December 2021 before Amazon recategorized it.[20][33] The book received backlash from reviewers who called it "hateful." Some booksellers refused to sell it.[33] Fox News host Tucker Carlson and conservative news outlet TheBlaze both praised the book.[34][35]

Walsh starred in the documentary What is a Woman?, released by The Daily Wire on June 1, 2022 which coincided with the beginning of pride month. It featured Walsh asking the question "What is a woman?" to strangers around the world and to others including a pediatrician, a gender-affirming family and marriage therapist, and psychologist Jordan Peterson.[36][37][38][39] According to Walsh, "Most of the people we talked to either didn't want to talk about it or they appeared to be confused about something as simple as what a woman is".[37] Walsh described the documentary as an "assault on gender ideology".[36]

In February 2022, transgender activist Eli Erlick alleged that Walsh had invited dozens of trans people and doctors, including a fourteen-year-old girl, to participate in What is a Woman? under alleged false pretenses.[40][41][42][43] Model Kataluna Enriquez, Fallon Fox, and other transgender public figures corroborated the account, saying that Walsh had created a group called the Gender Unity Project in his efforts.[44][45] In May 2022, a transgender man said that Walsh used his image in the documentary without his permission.[40]

Politicians

When South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem declined to ban businesses from requiring a COVID-19 vaccine for their employees, he criticized her by writing that she was only considered a 2024 Republican presidential contender because of her physical attractiveness.[46] After Noem called his comment misogynistic, Walsh said he had no regrets but would "accept apologies from all of the performative idiots pretending to be offended by it".[47]

When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted photos of her grandmother's house in Puerto Rico that was unrepaired in 2021, four years after Hurricane Maria, and blamed former President Donald Trump for not doing enough to help the recovery, Walsh criticized Ocasio-Cortez for not providing the money herself. He launched a crowdfunding effort to pay for the repairs and raised $100,000 in the first 24 hours but the grandmother's family refused the funds, and GoFundMe shut the effort down.[48] Ocasio-Cortez responded to the criticism by saying, "My abuela is okay ... but instead of only caring for mine & letting others suffer, I'm calling attention to the systemic injustices you seem totally fine w/ in having a US colony."[48]

Event cancellation

St. Francis Xavier College Church, at Saint Louis University, cancelled a speech by Walsh that it had planned to co-host with Young Americans for Freedom in December 2021. The church said it had decided that Walsh's "provocative positions on immigration, on communities of color, on Muslims, and on members of the LGBTQ community" were "in contradiction to Jesus' great commandment to love God and love our neighbor".[49] Walsh spoke at a different St. Louis venue.[50]

Personal life

Matt Walsh is married to Alissa Walsh, and they have four children together.[51] He lives in Nashville, Tennessee.[52] Walsh is a Catholic.[53]
