The Metropol building following the collapse

On May 23, 2022, the Metropol building in the city of Abadan, Iran, partially collapsed. The building was part of the Abdul Baqi Metropol Holding Twin Towers project. Structural failure of the building apparently occurred due to violations of technical rules and standards.

Timeline

On the day of the accident, 32 people were rescued from the rubble of the building, and the rescue operation in the building was completed by 7 p.m. At 20:30, the death toll rose to six. Search and rescue operations by the Iranian Red Crescent Society continued in the basement, and Red Crescent reconnaissance dogs identified three people alive from under the rubble. Survivors also found three detainees alive in the basement.

The next day, the debris removal operation from the lower floors began until twelve in the afternoon, the rescue team of the Tehran Fire Department was present at the scene. It is estimated that 50 people are under the rubble. The main demolition operation began at 2:00 PM. By 4:00 PM, another 40 sections of the building collapsed during the demolition operation, injuring three rescuers. By 19:45, another survivor was rescued from the rubble.

At eleven PM, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi asked the people to leave the scene because of the serious danger of falling again and if the people are present, a catastrophe may occur. By two-thirty PM, according to Vahidi, debris removal had been stopped for some time due to high sensitivity and vibrations in the remaining part of the metropolis building. The death toll also rose to 16.
