All the Young Dudes is a canon divergent fan fiction written by MsKingBean89 on Archive of Our Own (AO3) that is set in the Harry Potter universe. It was written from March 2017 to November 2018. The fan fiction is over 500,000 words long and contains 188 chapters.[1][2][3] All the Young Dudes is named after a song by David Bowie of the same name.[1] It follows Remus Lupin from his before first year at Hogwarts to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.[1][3][4]
Plot summary
The story focuses on Remus Lupin. In his childhood, Remus was bitten by Fenrir Grayback and became a werewolf. Soon after, his father committed suicide and his mother placed Remus in St. Edmund's, a children's home for boys. At St. Edmund's, Remus is looked after by Matron, who locks him up during the full moon to keep him from hurting any of the other boys while preserving his secret.
As Remus comes of age, Albus Dumbledore visits the home to give Remus his acceptance letter to Hogwarts and explain his special situation. Since he is a werewolf, he will go into a secret tunnel under the Whomping Willow on full moons which leads to the Shrieking Shack, where he can undergo his transformation in privacy and safety.
While at Hogwarts, the number of staff that know Remus is a werewolf is kept to as few as possible. Seemingly, only Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Pomfrey know Remus's condition. Remus is sorted into Gryffindor and becomes roommates with James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, and Sirius Black. His three roommates are much more well-off than Remus, who struggles with poverty. Remus also faces prejudice because of his "half-blood" status as the son of a wizard and muggle (non-magical person).
When he starts schooling at Hogwarts, Remus is unable to read because he has undiagnosed dyslexia. With the help of Sirius and Lily Evans, Remus is able to overcome this with magical accommodations.
Remus learns of Sirius's family dynamic. As the heir to one of the largest "pure-blood" fortunes in the wizarding world, Sirius has a lot of pressure on his shoulders. His parents abuse him and his other relatives, excluding Andromeda Tonks, seem to turn a blind eye. Sirius's mother, Walpurga[note 1], tries to force Sirius to marry Narcissa Black, his cousin, to both Sirius and his Narcissa's dismay. Remus is able to stop this, however, by convincing Sirius's to-be-bride to make a magical binding promise to marry someone else. Sirius eventually escapes the Black household and moves in with the Potters. His trauma, however, from growing up in an abusive household follows him for the rest of the fan fiction.
In an attempt to receive money so he is not so ostracized from his roommates, Remus creates an underground cigarette business in which he sells cigarettes to Hogwarts students. Eventually he stops, and becomes embarrassed when people bring it up to him in front of his friends.
Throughout the story, Remus runs a study group. It started as a small group containing Lily Evans, Mary Macdonald, Marlene McKinnon, and himself, but later became open to all Hogwarts students.
Remus also struggles with his identity as a werewolf. Grayback sends his followers after Remus to try to get him to join his werewolf pack. Remus continuously declines, but later is kidnapped and brought there. He meets with Grayback and realizes that not all of the werewolves are evil, they just had nowhere else to go after being ostracized from their communities.
Remus eventually tells his roommates that he is a werewolf. In an attempt to help him not feel lonely while he is transformed, the group become animagi, and become able to turn into animals. In their animal forms, they are able to safely accompany werewolf-Remus outside of the Shrieking Shack during full moons. Later, Remus "comes out" as a werewolf to Lily, Marlene, and Mary despite previous statements of prejudice.
Remus also realizes he is gay and has a crush on Sirius Black. The two become a couple and Remus helps Sirius discover his sexuality. Remus comes out to the rest of his friends on a camping trip, and later Sirius tells them that he and Remus are a couple.[note 2]
After his schooling, Remus helps in the war effort, trying to defeat Voldemort. Within the war, all of his friends die, excluding Sirius, Mary, and Peter. However, the entire wizarding world is led to believe the Peter is deceased. It is later revealed in the Harry Potter series that he was living as a rat in his animagus form. Mary moves to the Caribbean to be with her extended family and escape her bad memories from the war.
While Remus is staying with a wolf pack to gain information about them, Sirius is put in Azkaban, a wizard prison, because he was believed to have killed James and Lily Potter (nee Evans). Unknown to the wizarding world, it was Peter. With no way to cope, Remus shuts himself off from the wizarding world, finding comfort in an old boyfriend, Grant Chapman. Grant and Remus become a couple and live in Remus and Sirius's old apartment. Towards the end of the fan fiction, Sirius returns to find Grant and Remus a couple. Grant leaves Remus, saying he knows Sirius will never compare to himself, and moves away to accept a job offer.[5][6][7][8]
