The 8,000-ton vessel Nisshin Maru is the largest ship of the Japanese whaling fleet. After a major fire in February 2007, located in the processing factory, it is now disabled in Antarctic waters. The ship is carrying approximately 1,000 tons of oil. This incident is taking place withing the New Zealand Search and Rescue Region.[6]
