Novak Djokovic is the three-time defending champion.[1][2] He is attempting to become the fifth man in the Open Era (after Björn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal) to record a streak of at least four consecutive titles at one major.[3][4]

Nadal was vying to become the first man to achieve a double Surface Slam,[5] the second man (after Borg) to complete a triple Channel Slam,[6] and the sixth man (after Jack Crawford, Don Budge, Lew Hoad, Rod Laver,[i] and Djokovic) to complete the first three components of a Grand Slam. Moreover, he was attempting to become the first man to win at least three majors on all surfaces (clay, hard, and grass).[ii] He was also attempting to equal Serena Williams' combined Open Era record of 23 major singles titles.[iii] However, he withdrew from the tournament before his scheduled semifinal match against Nick Kyrgios due to a torn abdominal muscle, the first time anyone has withdrawn this late in the tournament in the Open Era.[7][8]

Kyrgios became the first Australian man to reach a major semifinal since Lleyton Hewitt at the 2005 US Open, the first to reach a major final since Hewitt at the 2005 Australian Open, the first unseeded man to reach the Wimbledon semifinals since Marat Safin and Rainer Schüttler in 2008, and the first unseeded man to reach a major final since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the 2008 Australian Open.[iv][9]

Cameron Norrie became the fourth British man in the Open Era, after Roger Taylor, Tim Henman, and Andy Murray, to reach the semifinals.[10] It was the first time two left-handed men (Norrie and Nadal) advanced to the semifinals since John McEnroe and Goran Ivanišević in 1992, and to the semifinals of any major since Jürgen Melzer and Nadal at the 2010 French Open.[11]

This marks the first edition of Wimbledon since 1998 not to feature record eight-time champion Federer.[12] Feliciano López made his 81st main-draw major appearance, tying Federer's all-time record.[13]

This is the first Wimbledon since the introduction of the ATP rankings in 1973, and the first major since the 1999 Australian Open,[v] where both the reigning world No. 1 and No. 2 (Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev, respectively) are not competing. Medvedev is prohibited from playing due to his Russian nationality, while Zverev has an ankle injury.[14]

John Isner broke Ivo Karlović's world record of 13,728 career aces on the ATP Tour in his third-round match against Jannik Sinner.[15] Stan Wawrinka was attempting to complete the career Grand Slam,[16] but lost to Sinner in the first round.

This is the first edition of Wimbledon to feature a champions[vi] tie-break (10-point tie-break), when the score reaches six games all in the fifth set,[17] and the third edition to feature a final set tie-break.[vii] Alejandro Davidovich Fokina defeated Hubert Hurkacz in the first round after the first main-draw 10-point tie-break at Wimbledon.[18]

Seeded players

The following are the seeded players. Seedings are based on ATP rankings as of 20 June 2022. Rankings and points are as before 27 June 2022.

As a result of special ranking adjustment rules due to the COVID-19 pandemic, players are defending the higher of (i) their points from the 2021 tournament or (ii) the remaining 50% of their points from the 2019 tournament. Those points were not mandatory and are included in the table below only if they counted towards the player's ranking as of 27 June 2022. Note that this is a different rankings adjustment system than the one that the WTA is using for the women's tournament.

The ATP is removing ranking points from the 2022 tournament as a result of the All England Club's decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players from the tournament.[21] Points dropping from the 2021 or 2019 tournaments will accordingly be replaced by the player's next best result, regardless of his performance at Wimbledon in 2022.[22]

Withdrawals
