    Lua Error

    Hi, I was attempting to add Acts of Parliament to List of Acts of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 2022, however when adding the first one, it seems to have broken and I can't seem to find a fix for it. I really know little about Modules or how to fix formatting errors, so wondered if anyone could help. Tagging page creator and module creator. @Theknightwho PoliceSheep99 (talk) 01:17, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    @PoliceSheep99: In [1] you first copied an existing row. It didn't break anything but looked pointless. Then you added a row with |private|i. {{Legislationuk}} is undocumented and I don't know how it works or what your code is supposed to do but the table will render if it's changed to |public|12 to be similar to the other rows. SECOND NOTICE: Archiving post at Closure Requests page

    Wikipedia page verification

    From the previous question I asked, I got an answer that my draft may not be reviewed and published, because the page description is too short Is there a minimum page character or words? And please, I'm creating a business page for a business, I'm confused as to how to go about citation for that. Can I site the business "Google my business" profile? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nazario90 (talkcontribs) 12:10, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    There is no absolute minimum in wordcount, however, articles must at least big enough to not fall under the WP:A1 and/or WP:A3 speedy deletion criterions, and indicate hoe the subject is sufficiently notable for inclusion. Draft:Macnuc services is not in danger of getting A1'd or A3'd, however, it currently completely fails verification and as such also doesn't demonstrate how Macnuc services meets Wikipedia's definition of a noteable company. I do not know what exactly "Google my business" profile" refers to, but in general company profiles tend to be either too short and/or connected with the subject and as such don't realy help here. Victor Schmidt (talk) 13:18, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Nazario90, I'm afraid that, like many people, you have totally misunderstood what Wikipedia is. "Creating a business page for a business" is something you might do on social media or a business directory: it is absolutely not something to do on Wikipedia, because it is promotion, which is forbidden anywhere in Wikipedia. If at some point there is an article about your business, the article will not belong to you, will not be controlled by you, will not be for your business's benefit except incidentally, will not necessarily contain what you want it to say, and should be based almost entirely on what people wholly unconnected with your business have chosen to publish about it, not on what you or your associates say or want to say. Suggest Edits

    Im inquiring about an addition to the Williamsburg Bridge page. There is a section titled popular culture. It came to my awareness that in the introduction to the independent news show Democracy Now, the Williamsburg Bridge shows up briefly, for about three seconds. How can I add that to the section? Can I use a photograph from the introduction as a source?

    Best, HeyNYC123 (talk) 12:31, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    I don't understand how a three-second news clip of the object in question qualifies as popular culture. Bazza (talk) 15:27, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    It doesn't. Unfortunately, many Wikipedia contributors seem to think that 'I saw it on TV' is sufficient grounds for inclusion in an article popular culture section. See MOS:POPCULT for what actually qualifies: content citing secondary sources which cover the subject's cultural impact in some depth. Anything else is trivia. Tag visibility

    Just wondering why this dating of a tag has rendered it invisible and how it can be rendered visible again. Mutt Lunker (talk) 16:17, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Per the template documentation, that's how that template works. On or after the date specified it should become visible. DonIago (talk) 16:25, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    It has specified today's date so, can I expect it to be rendered invisible until midnight? Seems rather a flaw to render it invisible on the day of addition. Mutt Lunker (talk) 16:32, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Proposed deletion of my Wikipedia page

    my page, entitled "Ezra Bayda" is being considered for deletion. how can i add my input?

    i would agree to deletion because someone keeps putting material on my site which, although not exactly libelous, is inaccurate and negative. i don't know what to do about it.

    thank you for your help. 76.176.202.18 (talk) 16:58, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    The discussion of the article is at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ezra Bayda, you should participate there. Whether an article is deleted or not almost always comes down to whether or not the subject is notable enough to have an article about them, so that's going to be the focus of the discussion. You should be aware that claiming ownership of content is very much frowned upon on Wikipedia, that is simply not how it works Beeblebrox (talk) 17:06, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    UK Independence Party

    I am the National Party Chairman of the UK Independence Party and need to edit our WIKIPEDIA page to correctly reflect its history and current status. I cannot do this because the page is protected by another user who has no involvement with the party itself.

    Using Wikipedia

    While reading articles, the sections can be expanded by clicking on section title.

    When the section is read, there should be a way to shrink that section so that the page remains compact.

    This can be done in number of ways.

    Method 1

    When we click or tap on next section, the previous section should shrink. It can be opened again by clicking on its title.

    Only when the article is to be printed all sections should expand as given in settings.

    This facility will help to keep the reading compact.

    Method 2

    In setting please give a option, "close previous section while expanding next section".

    Will this method be useful to readers? Can it be done? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shreerangkaulgi (talkcontribs) 18:46, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Is this specific to one of the mobile apps? Expanding sections isn't a thing on the desktop or mobile sites. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 18:48, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Shreerangkaulgi: The mobile version does have expanding and collapsing level 2 sections, e.g. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia#History. You can collapse an expanded section by tapping its heading. You cannot do it at the end of the section. See mw:Extension talk:MobileFrontend for ways to give feedback. Google search results

    I have created an article for a screenwriter more than 4 months ago, even though is published and approved by Wikipedia, when I look for ´Ron Chepesiuk´in Google, no Wikipedia article appears in the first 5 pages (haven't tried further as is pointless). I would think that of a writer/journalist is published and approved, it should be in the first page of Google results when looking for it, but this is not the case, not even googling 'Ron Chepesiuk Wikipedia' shows up.

    Can I get any help about how to solve this? Thanks Ivan Aranda Alvarez (talk) 21:31, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    @Ivan Aranda Alvarez: Please check your talk page. The article was declined. -Arch dude (talk) 21:57, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Ivan Aranda Alvarez: Drafts are intentionally NOINDEXed on account of being unfinished drafts. We do the same thing to userpages and user subpages as well, for similar reasons. Search engines that respect robots.txt (such as Google, as well as most other reputable ones) will thus not pull them up. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 22:12, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Ivan Aranda Alvarez: You created Draft:Ron Chepesiuk in February. It was declined and has been deleted on your request. User:Kavin Jasel created Ron Chepesiuk in April. Your acount has also edited it. It is currently the sixth Google hit for me. Which of the pages are you referring to? Are you also Kavin Jasel? PrimeHunter (talk) 22:39, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    I find images in MediaCommons that can be used if a given tag is included; however, I have yet to discover a location for the tag's inclusion. Advice on this matter would be most appreciated.My specific case can be viewed under Licensing at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Albatros_D.I.jpg.

    Help with this will lead to ongoing article improvements, as I will continue to use skills gained in (near) future articles. Georgejdorner (talk) 01:30, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    @Georgejdorner: Hi there! If your question isn't answered at commons:Help:Contents, then you could try commons:Commons:Help desk. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 01:49, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Georgejdorner: You don't need to add a tag to use the image. Instead, the uploader was supposed to add the tag to the image description page. Did you upload the image? if so, edit the image description page and add {{PD-US}} or a more specific tag as appropriate. Add it right after the current tag. -Arch dude (talk) 02:02, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    The 'problem' in Talk:Besta-deild karla

    Talk:Besta-deild karla has a section 'Remove the hyphen from the title'. In the section, a page move from 'Besta-deild karla' to 'Besta deild karla' has been proposed. The page Besta-deild karla has not been moved yet. However, Template:Title notice has not been added to the page, and the template should not be manually transcluded. What can be done to this situation? Intolerable situation (talk) 02:49, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    @Intolerable situation: {{Title notice}} says: "Follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Requested moves § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves." Those instructions say to use {{subst:requested move|...}} for potentially controversial moves. Then a bot can discover the move discussion and add {{Title notice}}. IP Address

    Hi, I am a new user and edited some information before creating an account, my IP address was publicly published. Can I please request a suppression of my IP address?

    Thank you for your time. Campotexis (talk) 06:02, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi Campotexis. You should take a look at WP:OVERSIGHT and WP:LOGGEDOUT for reference. You will need to email OVERSIGHT and let them know which edit you made so that they can supress the IP address. Including a link to the edit in your email should be all you need to do. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:17, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you for the information Campotexis (talk) 13:44, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Marchjuly I know this is important to many people, and that is fine, but I have never understood it. What privacy can be breached if your fake name/Wiki handle is linked to your city or state by the IP address? And if it's only your IP address, and no account name, all we know is that (for example) an editor in or near Chicago said XYZ.
    My IP address used to show up as being from a city that's 225 miles away from here. I plan to get a user account, and I don't know why I should be concerned even if that account ends up being linked to my IP. Perhaps I am being naive... 71.228.112.175 (talk) 07:30, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    If you're serious about wanting an answer... the risk mainly comes when the IP address appears elsewhere, one day in the past or future. For example, a leaky forum where you posted an image of your house, or family, from your IP, or a hacked database where you supplied your email and phone number along with your IP, or some other particular leaked Internet logs. The possibilities for linking data are enormous, and if you upset the wrong people you could soon end up with death threats posted to your front door or worse. There are some seriously messed up people out there who would be happy to abuse your personal data, and there are some seriously vulnerable people. And please don't think I'm being over-dramatic. There are also different types of addresses; they're not all just a bunch of random numbers in a another city. They can be used to find people, with great detail. -- zzuuzz (talk) 07:51, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    The OP asked how they could have their IP address suppressed, and I simply was just trying to answer their question. Whether there are serious risks associated with someone editing from an IP account and what those risks might be are probably questions best directed to an expert in internet privacy and security, but whatever risks there are probably vary quite a bit based on who you are. If you Google about this, you'll find a plethora of general information this and then you can figure out whether it's something you need to be concerned about. In many cases, making your IP address public is probably not going to matter; however, there are certainly lots of "clever" people out there whose "job" is related to the buying, selling or otherwise exploiting even the most apparently benign bits of information they're able to find online. If there's a way for someone to take advantage of such information that can make them some money, then they probably will. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:48, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Adding information that is correct, but not necessarily required

    I found this page https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Pencil_skirt&oldid=1102489551 about pencil skirts, and someone added another image https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Pencil_skirt&oldid=1086105941 but it was removed because "let's not make this political". The edit in question doesn't bring up any politics, and it is indeed a pencil skirt, so I don't see why it can't be added. Thunderstruc (talk) 09:59, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    The best place to discuss this is at Talk:Pencil skirt. AndyTheGrump (talk) 10:12, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Yes, this specific case is better to discuss there. But this is just an example of the question "should you add info that is correct, but not necessarily required?" Thunderstruc (talk) 10:20, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    The only sensible answer to a vague general question like that is 'it depends'. Wikipedia is attempting to be an encyclopaedia, not a database, and as a matter of course includes things that aren't necessarily 'required'. It comes down to judgement, common sense, and an understanding that people aren't always going to agree on whether something merits inclusion or not. AndyTheGrump (talk) 11:41, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Placing a 2017 image of Melanie Trump as first lady in a "History" section [3] could be seen as political when she may become first lady again. I don't know fashion but is it a typical pencil skirt when it has large buttons in the side? The description at File:Awada & Melania.jpg links https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-4452446/Melania-Trump-wears-edgy-military-inspired-suit.html which only says pencil about the other woman, the first lady of Argentina. Hello, hmdnasir. There is no point in posting information about a person here on the help page. There are no "staff" who will pick up your suggestion and make articles. You may post a request at requested articles, but there is no guarantee that a volunteer will action your request, and to be honest the take-up there is very low.
    If you think that Zhang meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then your best bet is to find the sources which establish notability (remember that these cannot include anything written, published, or commissioned by Zhang and his associates: Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources.) and try to get somebody interested in creating an article about him. WT:WikiProject Singapore may be a place to ask, but you'll probably have to do more than just placing his details: you are effectively competing for a volunteer's time, so you need to give somebody a reason why they might want to work on this. Finding evidence of notability would be a good start, because if you cannot find sufficient independent sources, you'll know that there's no point in anybody spending any more time on this.
    If you choose to try to create the article yourself (which I would not recommend for a new editor) please start by reading your first article. ColinFine (talk) 14:55, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello Imcdc. You created the article straight in mainspace and the new pages patrol will get round to reviewing it in due course (they have a large backlog). Meanwhile it won't be indexed by search engines. You might like to rephrase the first sentence where you say this company provides digital solution platforms as that is marketing-speak that an encyclopaedia ought not to use (see WP:SOLUTIONS). Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:14, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Michael D. Turnbull Page has been reviewed now. I have also updated the header to remove such marketing wording. Thanks -Imcdc (talk) 02:46, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Imcdc I note that there is a redirect from AMTD to TD Ameritrade owing to the latter's stock ticker. Now the new article exists, maybe there would be a case for a WP:HATNOTE on them. AMTD Digital would now be a good prospect for a WP:DYK, I think. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:07, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    @CordeusCerame: National Intelligence Service is a disambiguation page. It is a list of Wikipedia articles, not a list of organizatins in the world. If the new organization is notable by our definition, it can be the subject of a new article. If it is not notable by our definition, then it cannot have an article at all, so start by reading WP:NCORP. Only after you know it's notable, then go to WP:YFA to see how to write the article. Once the new article exists, it can be added to the disambiguation page. -Arch dude (talk) 16:59, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    eeeek

    I did a source assessment table and ended up apparently screwing up the markup. Can anyone help? It's 22 sources for an article that has already been AfD'd twice so I really need to provide this evidence and I'm about to start drinking.

    Is there any user script that will highlight particular words in particular colors?

    I know of one that highlights specific web links, but that uses HTML elements as selectors, while words are not unique HTML elements. So has a script like this ever been made on Wikipedia? —Lights and freedom (talk ~ contribs) 19:50, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    I don't know of anything existing that does that, so I threw together this:
    words = [ "Your", "Words", "Here" ];
    words.forEach( word => {
     wordREX = new regExp(word, 'g');
     $("body").children().each(function() {
      $(this).html($(this).html().replace(wordREX,'<span style="background-color: orange">'+word+'</span>'));
     });
    });

    Does this do what you want? — Preceding unsigned comment added by WelpThatWorked (talkcontribs) 22:33, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    How do I get found on Wikipedia

    I have a business which I want to be recognised on Wikipedia. How do I send information and to who? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.90.202.89 (talk) 20:25, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    That is not how Wikipedia works. It is not a form of directory or for publicity purposes. Wikipedia contains articles about notable topics (see WP:NCORP) which have been written by persons (editors) with no connection to the subject and based upon what has been written about that subject in independent, reliable sources. Any article would not be 'yours' or for the benefit of the business; it would be Wikipedia's article about your company; you would not control it and would not be permitted to edit it directly. Mutarelli

    Hello! This list on notable people with the last name Mutarelli only lists two people. Should the list be deleted and a message be displayed on each page about the other person, or should more people be found with the surname Mutarelli so that this can be made into a disambiguation page? Thanks! 𝙷𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚘𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚝 👋❤️ (𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔🤔) 20:49, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    @Helloheart: Lourenço Mutarelli and Massimo Mutarelli a unrelated and not confused with eachother unless they are commonly referred to as just "Mutarelli" so there is no reason to display a hatnote about the other person. Mutarelli is a surname page. The purpose is not disambiguation. It might be nominated for deletion but I think we have a low bar for surname pages. Category:Surnames has 91,000 pages although many are redirects. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:53, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Helloheart The rules for this are based on whether there's a primary topic for the title; for a name, that would be the case if one person with the name would be much more likely to be searched for than anyone else with that name. If there's a primary topic, then we point the link at that topic, and put a note at the top of the page (called a hatnote) so that people searching for someone else with the same name could find them. If there isn't a primary topic, then we create a list of possible search results (a disambiguation page) even if there are only two results, so that we can show a list of possibilities for someone who searches for the name rather than having to guess which one they want.

    In this case, neither of the people in question seems to be known primarily by their surname, so it's likely that a search for a particular person would use both names, and so if someone searches for the surname alone, we should probably give them a list of possibilities. So I don't think anything needs changing here, even if it turns out that there are only two notable people with that name. --ais523 22:28, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Looking To Get Some assistance

    I'm new to the editing world on Wikipedia and trying to work on my first article entry. For the sources used, what is considered to be a good amount generally to showcase authority for a topic? Martystlouis21 (talk) 21:57, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi, Martystlouis21! It depends on how big your page is. Unless it is a really small stub (a short article), use more than two references. Otherwise a good rule of thumb is to find as many sources as possible (but not WAY too much... that's not a good idea) and use them when you use a fact from a particular website. If you cannot find enough sources from notable sources then maybe the subject is not notable enough. (See WP:GNG) The right place to ask this question is probably the Teahouse. You've got a reasonable amount of edits so you are probably ready. Another good thing to do is look at a featured article and see how it cites things for an idea. Good luck and happy editing! 𝙷𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚘𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚝 👋❤️ (𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔🤔) 22:05, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Martystlouis21: you need two or three solid references to establish notability. If they are substantial enough to establish notability, then you will almost certainly use each of them as references for multiple assertions you make in the article. After you do that, you should concentrate on writing a good encyclopedic article, not on the number of references per se. As you write your article, you will need to add references for each fact you add to the article, so the number of facts you add that are not already covered in your main references will determine the number of references you need. This may vary radically depending on how comprehensive your main references are. In my opinion trying to cram in additional references is not the way to build a good article. -Arch dude (talk) 17:35, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    Lua Error when using Rail color box template for a specific rail line

    Whenever I try to use the Rail color box (rcb) template for MTR's Guangzhou-Kowloon line, I return with an error: "attempt to concatenate local 'color' (a nil value). "

    {{rcb|MTR|guangzhou-kowloon}}

    I've checked Module:Adjacent_stations/MTR and the line does seem to in fact have a color value, as with all the other lines. Yet this specific "Guangzhou-Kowloon" line is the only one causing such an error. As you can see below, this error cannot be replicated on the other lines.

    {{rcb|MTR|Island}}
    {{rcb|MTR|Disneyland}}
    {{rcb|MTR|Tung Chung}}

    @Durian Farmer and Pppery: Because the alias used in Module:Adjacent_stations/MTR for guangzhou-kowloon was coded as Guangzhou-Kowloon (with a hyphen) rather than Guangzhou–Kowloon (with an en-dash), which I have fixed:

    How can one flag that a locked article needs to be edited?

    Hi All, I am looking to edit a Wikipedia article that is locked (protected from edits). Not that it is wrong, but rather one of the paragraphs has a lacking point, where it may be misleading if not edited due to its ambiguity. I would like to add to the final sentence and tag a source or two. Many thanks for your help! TheLibyanIntellectual (talk) 10:26, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

    TheLibyanIntellectual, you need to make an edit request, see instructions at Wikipedia:Edit requests, then your request will be added to a list of requests for editors who can edit the article. Requests should be specific, such as Change X to Y; Insert X after/before Y; Remove X. TSventon (talk) 10:33, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
