Antony Matheus dos Santos (born 24 February 2000), simply known as Antony, is a Brazilian professional football player who plays as a winger for Eredivisie club Ajax and the Brazil national team.
Antony is a graduate of São Paulo's youth system and scored six goals in 52 appearances for the club. He joined Ajax in 2020 and has won two Eredivisie titles and one KNVB Cup.
Antony won a gold medal with the Brazil under-23 team at the 2020 Summer Olympics. He scored on his senior international debut against Venezuela in October 2021.
Club career
São Paulo
Born in Osasco, Antony joined the youth setup of São Paulo in 2010. In 2018, his side won the J League Challenge tournament in Japan and he was voted as the best player of the tournament.[2]
On 26 September 2018, Antony along with Helinho and Igor Gomes were promoted to the senior team,[3] and he signed a contract until September 2023.[2] On 15 November, he made his first-team debut, coming on as a substitute for Helinho in a 1–1 draw against Grêmio.[4]
Ajax
On 23 February 2020, Ajax signed Antony on a five-year deal for an initial £13 million, which could rise to £18.2 million.[5] On 13 September 2020, he scored his first goal for Ajax in a 1–0 win over Sparta Rotterdam.[6] In a league game against SBV Vitesse, he bagged his second goal for Ajax. On 3 November 2020, Antony scored his first UEFA Champions League goal in a 2–1 away win over Midtjylland in the 2020–21 season.[7]
Manchester United
On 28 August 2022, Ajax confirmed they had reached an agreement with English Premier League club Manchester United for the transfer of Antony.[8][9] His transfer fee was reported to be an initial £80.75 million, with a further £4.25 million in add-ons.[10][11]
International career
On 17 June 2021, Antony was named in the Brazil under-23 squad for the 2020 Summer Olympics.[12] He started in all of Brazil's six games at the tournament.[13] In the final against Spain, he assisted Malcom's winning goal in extra-time as Brazil won the title.[14] He scored six goals in 22 games for the under-23 team.[15]
He made his debut for the Brazil national football team on 7 October 2021 in a World Cup qualifier against Venezuela. He came on as a substitute in 77th minute and scored a goal in added time to establish the final score of 3–1 for Brazil.[16]
