Fabiano Ribeiro de Freitas (born 29 February 1988) is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays for Cypriot club Omonia as a goalkeeper.

Club career

São Paulo and Olhanense

Born in Mundo Novo, Bahia,[2] Freitas joined São Paulo FC in 2006, aged 18. During his four-year spell he only played two Série A games, also being loaned to several modest teams. He made his debut in the top division on 13 October 2007 in a 1–1 draw against Fluminense FC at the Maracanã Stadium where he saved a penalty, being part of the squads that won back-to-back national championships.[3]

On 28 June 2011, Freitas signed with Portuguese club S.C. Olhanense.[4] He made his debut in the Primeira Liga on 13 August in a 1–1 draw at Sporting CP,[5] and went on to appear in all league matches during the season as the Algarve side retained their division status.

Porto

Freitas moved to FC Porto in late May 2012, penning a four-year contract.[6] He acted as understudy to compatriot Helton in his debut campaign, subsequently becoming a starter after an injury to the latter.[7]

On 21 April 2015, in an away fixture for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League against FC Bayern Munich, Freitas' team lost 6–1, making it the worst in their European history.[8] In the subsequent off-season, he was loaned to Fenerbahçe SK.[9]

Back at the Estádio do Dragão, Freitas missed the vast majority of 2017–18 due to an injury to his right knee.[10] He earned a champions' winners medal in the last matchday after playing the last minutes of the 1–0 away win over Vitória de Guimarães, having replaced third choice Vaná.[11]

Freitas played all the matches save one in the 2018–19 edition of the Taça de Portugal, where his team reached the final.[12][13] He was not featured in the domestic league, however.

Omonia

On 17 October 2019, Freitas signed a one-year deal with Omonia of the Cypriot First Division, as a free agent.[14] Omonia's first and second-choice goalkeepers at the time had both suffered severe injuries, which made the transfer necessary for the club. He made his debut just three days later, in a 0–0 away draw against Anorthosis Famagusta.[15][16] In January 2020, he sustained an injury which kept him out of action until the abandonment of the 2019–20 Cypriot football season.[17] On 9 June, after he had recovered from his injury, Freitas extended his contract with Omonia until 2022.[18]

On 16 September 2020, Freitas was in goal for Omonia in a Champions League qualifier against Red Star Belgrade. His two saves in the penalty shootout meant that Omonia had qualified to the group stage of a European competition for the first time in the club's history.[19] He ended the season as domestic champion, helping Omonia win the Cypriot First Division for the first time since 2010.[20] Freitas was named the MVP of the season in Cyprus.[21] At the end of the season, he extended his contract until 2024.[22]

The following season, Freitas was involved in four penalty shootouts. He was able to help his team win three of them; against Anorthosis Famagusta in the Cypriot Super Cup,[23] against Flora Tallinn in a Europa League qualifier,[24] and against Ethnikos Achna in the final of the 2021–22 Cypriot Cup.[25] He saved a total of six penalties in these three matches.
