Brian Morgan stage directed many controversial opera productions between New Orleans (his native city) and New York, including Suor Angelica, Venus and Adonis, Sāvitri (New Orleans premiere), Cards, La voix humaine (New Orleans premiere, in his own translation), s (world premiere), Hänsel und Gretel, Dido and Æneas, Pelléas et Mélisande (New Orleans premiere), Bastien und Bastienne, Everyman (world premiere), Orfeo ed Euridice, Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, Everyman (New York premiere), Pierrot lunaire, and the original version of Médée (which was then recorded by Newport Classic).
Mr Morgan, who is of German and Dutch extraction, is a graduate of Loyola University of the South's College of Music, erstwhile apprentice to John Dexter at the Metropolitan Opera, former Artistic Director of The New Opera Theatre (New Orleans) and Opera Quotannis (New York City), former Programme Annotator of the New Orleans Opera Association, and former Liturgical Advisor to the New Orleans Musica da Camera. He has written on æsthetics for various publications, including Opera News, Codex (essays on Beverly Sills and Alessandro Moreschi), OnStage (an essay on Werner Torkanowsky), and The New Orleans Advocate, and his critically-acclaimed book Strange Child of Chaos: Norman Treigle, was published in 2006.
Following several years as a strictly-cloistered monk, he returned to New Orleans shortly after Hurricane Katrina, where he was classical-music correspondent for the PBS affiliate WYES's "Stepping Out" for nine years. He is a noted musician, and is Basilica Organist at St Stephen Basilica in New Orleans. On facebook, Mr Morgan has created The Susanne Marsee Appreciation Society, The Herva Nelli Appreciation Society, The Norman Treigle Appreciation Society, The Giuseppe Anselmi Appreciation Society, The Gilda Dalla Rizza Appreciation Society, as well as The Society of the Holy Infant of Good Health, The Society of St Baradates, and The Society of the Infant of Prague.
