The Higher Institute of Music in Damascus is a music academy in Syria. It was established in 1990 by presidential decree. Its aim was to prepare a generation of musicians who are able to perform Arab and international music. The Institute trains specialists in various Arab and international musical instruments. It educates composers and band leaders. It teaches the principles of individual, collective, Arab and international singing. It prepares music researchers, especially to study Arabic music.[1]
Before the Syrian Civil War the Institute employed Russian teachers.[2] Among them were V. Babenko who led the team of authors of the musical dictionary and harmony textbook.[3]
