WikiProject Military history coordinator election voting has commenced
Hey y'all, voting for the 2021 Wikiproject Military history coordinator tranche is now open. This is a simple approval vote; only "support" votes should be made. Project members should vote for any candidates they support by 23:59 (UTC) on 28 September 2021. Voting will be conducted at the 2021 tranche page itself. Appropriate questions for the candidates can also be asked. Thanks, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:41, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
What are your questions?
HowardMorland (talk) 02:18, 24 September 2021 (UTC) @HowardMorland:
Thanks for getting back to me.
In your article you wrote on the FAS website (https://sgp.fas.org/eprint/cardozo.html), you include a copy of the "Greenpeace Diagrams", allegedly showing the internals a W80 nuclear warhead.
I've been trying to track down the origin of this image. I've spoken to several knowledgeable people including Alex Wellerstein and generally people seem to be of the opinion that the images are fake. Commonly cited issues are the location of the neutrons guns, some other strange terminology used and the fact the design does not use an air lens implosion system.
However, in my research into a British developed concept codenamed Super Octopus, I've found evidence that Super Octopus (called a multi-point initiation system in the US) was adapted by the US in the 1960s and may be the modern basis for US and British primary stages, which the diagram appears to depict if the labels are ignored. Further, I have examined the diagram and the other diagrams in the set and based on the font used and the style of arrows used, I believe that the labels are later additions (see here https://imgur.com/a/Sd9IpzC).
Alex pointed me towards the original Greenpeace report which was produced by Large and Associates. I attempted to contact Large and Associates, but Mr Large died in 2018 and his widow informed me that after his death his collection of documents were professionally destroyed. This is where I am stuck trying to trace the images' origins. I did attempt to email Greenpeace UK through their public facing email, but they never got back to me.
I was hoping you might have another lead or know the actual origin of these images. Thanks. Kylesenior (talk) 06:09, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
- "Professionally destroyed" sounds pretty serious. I'm afraid you know a lot more about this than I do. At this point I don't even remember where I first saw the diagram. Let me know if you learn anything more. HowardMorland (talk) 13:24, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
- Cheers. Don't worry about rushing or going out of your way for it; I have a long wait to go for my various FOIAs related to the topic. Kylesenior (talk) 13:50, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
- I'll get back to you next week on the Holocaust Bomb article. HowardMorland (talk) 03:19, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
- I just re-read your question, and I realize that I don't have anything that you don't already have. HowardMorland (talk) 19:59, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
- You can click the link in the FAS article and see what I saw of it. I assume it is mostly classified. HowardMorland (talk) 01:52, 12 November 2021 (UTC)
- So that's the full document there? I was hoping yo get a hold of scans as the transcript does not let me get a feel for how much was removed.Kylesenior (talk) 04:40, 12 November 2021 (UTC)
