Dilton Donald Doiley is a fictional character in the Archie Comics universe. He is the smartest teenager in Riverdale High School.
History
First referred to as Theodosious in Pep Comics #27, then as Dilbert in Archie Comics #34, and finally as Dilton in Pep Comics #78.
He carries with him all the stereotypical nerdy teen attributes: studious, glasses, and high flown language. Yet while he is not particularly interested in dating, he is widely admired by Archie and the gang.
He is an amateur inventor and he has helped the gang many times with his various inventions. This especially goes for Moose Mason who will do anything to protect his "little buddy" - anyone bullying Dilton would face Moose's wrath. In current stories, this relationship is increasingly being portrayed as symbiotic, with Dilton standing up in favour of Moose - in one story, he even pounces on Reggie Mantle in defense of Moose, when the latter was insulting Moose.
During the early 1990s, Dilton briefly became the star of his own magazine named "Dilton's Strange Science". The magazine featured Dilton and Danni Malloy, a red-haired girl and amateur inventor, who shared his intellect and interests and served as his best friend and love interest. They shared a number of humorous science fiction stories, involving their inventions.
He has been seen in numerous stories where he tries to invent a female robot for himself with hilarious consequences.
More recently, Dilton has been dating Cheryl Blossom. They were paired together online, without knowing each other's true identity, fell in love, met in real life, and decided to continue their romantic relationship, though this is rarely shown.
Dilton also is the only character that has been compared in the comics to historical figures. In one story where he sent a rocket into orbit, he was compared to Albert Einstein and Wernher Von Braun.
Also, in various stories, Dilton is shown in relationships with tall and/or big females.
In one story, Dilton's personality has changed dramatically--he is rude, snappish, insulting--even to the teachers. And he fails a math test! Archie does some detective work and finds out that a girl working in the office of the Doilys' family doctor is falsifying records, convincing Dilton his brain is dissolving. The girl's boyfriend is a rival of Dilton's from another school. With Moose present, Archie gets the girl and her boyfriend to come clean. Then Dilton, convinced now of the scheme, asks Moose to get on his hands and knees near the rival. Dilton stands on Moose's back--and clouts the trickster, just before walking off triumphantly with Moose, to start work on his upcoming science project.
