As of December 2021, Greystar had $49.9 billion in gross assets under management,[3] and operated in 16 countries in 2022.[4]

Greystar was the largest apartment management company in the United States in 2021, with over 754,000 units/beds of apartment infrastructure.[5]

History

Founded in 1993 by chairman and CEO Bob Faith, and headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina, Greystar has over 20,000 employees, and 64 offices in the US, Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific region.[6]

The company began operating in the UK in 2013.[7] In July 2017, Greystar announced it would acquire Monogram Residential Trust's 14,000-unit portfolio of 49 rental communities in ten states, for $3 billion.[8]

Starting in 2018, Greystar announced that multiple acquisitions, including EdR, a manager of college housing communities in the US, for $4.6 billion.[9]

In 2019, the company was sued for violating consumer protection laws. In an Los Angeles County Superior Court filing, Greystar was charged with gathering extensive personal identifying information about its tenants without their knowledge or consent. At five Greystar-owned apartment buildings, the company collected information about its tenants' "character" and "general reputation."[10]

In 2020, Greystar acquired Alliance Residential Co. in 2020,[11] and in October of 2020, Greystar acquired 45% of Thackeray Partners with the future option to purchase the remainder of ownership interest within two years.[12] That December, Greystar, Walker & Dunlap, and Project Destined partnered together to provide students of diverse backgrounds a paid internship with real-world real estate and investment opportunities in Durham, North Carolina.[13]

2021 saw Greystar announce a number of large scale partnerships and projects, including the acquisition of Fizzy Living[14] and a partnership with the University of South Carolina to create a 1800 unit Campus Village in Columbia, South Carolina,[15] and further student housing portfolio development with an additional $600 million investment with partnerships with University of Maryland, College Park and University of Texas at Austin.[16] In March of 2021, Greystar, along with partners Ivanhoé Cambridge and Bouwinvest, announced a $1.1 billion dollar joint venture to develop and acquire housing for students and young professionals in the greater Paris region,[17] and a multifamily joint venture in Chile.[18] Greystar also announced a partnership with CPP Investment Board to diversify into life sciences development with a $74 million, 468,000 square-foot, 18 story office and lab in Somerville, Massachusetts,[19] as well as a joint venture to develop and acquire both purpose-built single-family and multi-family rental communities in the United States.[20][21] In June, Greystar secured over $880 million of investments to expand markets in the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, France, Germany, and Austria to integrate the “pan-European” residential platform.[22] By the year's end, Greystar closed on the remaining 55% of the acquisition of Thackeray[23] and made further plans to expand into the industrial sector, targeting the Houston, Utah and Louisiana markets.[24]

In March of 2022, Greystar and Project Destined expanded their partnership to students at South Carolina State University.[25]

In 2022, Greystar operated in thirteen countries,[26] including China, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.[27]
