Choudhury (Template:Lang-bn); also: Choudhuri, Chaudhuri, Choudhuary, Chowdhury) is a sanatan dharma-based- hereditary title of honor which was used to denote only those Brahmins and Kshatriyas of Gour who are the actual Rulers of Gour and has royal bloodline.
Originally each and every Ruler of Gour was refered to as a Choudhury. The Rulers of Gour were also termed as Bhumipatis of Gour.
After the conquest of the Muslims over entire India, all of the Rulers of Gour who were refered to as Choudhury were converted into zamindars of bengal by the muslim rulers. After the conquest of muslims over entire India, all of the Rulers of Gour were known as zamindars. This tradition of converting bhumipatis into zamindars continued even during british rule over India.
Population
The population according to the 2001 census was 282,392 (males: 141,512 and females: 140,880).[1]
