Clifton is a suburb of the city of Nottingham. It used to be in Nottinghamshire until 1997. The term also encompasses Clifton Grove and Clifton Village, a picturesque residential area set alongside the River Trent. The village is notable for many old houses including Clifton Hall.

Clifton proper, however, is a sprawling conurbation which was at one time the largest council estate in Europe. Since the 1980s, however, most of the houses have passed from council to private ownership. Enjoying a sometimes undeserved reputation for social problems such as crime and poor housing, Clifton (like some of Nottingham's immediate suburbs) has benefited in recent years from redevelopment and regeneration work initiated by the city council.

The estate has a shopping centre and relatively good transport links (by bus) with the city and surrounding areas. The village is on the A453 which is the main connection between Nottingham and the M1 south. There are terrible congestion problems from both directions around 8am and 5pm, due to large quantities of traffic leaving the Clifton Boulevard from the east. The section of the A453 from Kegworth to the roundabout next to the Crusader pub is due to be upgraded to dual carriageway around 2011.

There are two large Co-ops on Green Lane and Greencroft, and an Iceland and Farmfoods on Southchurch Drive near Clifton Leisure Centre. Other pubs in Clifton are the Grey Mare on Farnborough Road and the Man of Trent on Gotham Lane.

Milford Primary School is on Dungannon Road , other primary schools include Glapton , Whitegate , Highbank , Dovecote (an amalgamation of Greencroft , Brooksby and Brinkhill ) and Blessed Robert widmerpool. Farnborough School Technology College is on Farnborough Road, as is Fairham Community College. Nethergate School on Swansdowne Drive is for special needs. The Nottingham Trent University has one of its campuses on Clifton Lane (A453), which does not help Clifton's transport problems at rush hour.
