Sleep deprivation, also known as sleep insufficiency or sleeplessness, is the condition of not having adequate duration and/or quality of sleep to support decent alertness, performance, and health. It can be either chronic or acute and may vary widely in severity. There are tons of factors that contribute to sleep deprivation. It may not just be lack of sleep like some may think. Factors can include sleep hygiene, lifestyle choices, work obligations, sleep disorders, and other medical conditions. People don't take sleep deprivation as seriously as they should. Doctors say people lack the attention to sleep deprivation and it is a major concern to peoples health that should be taken more seriously.

The average adult needs seven or more hours of sleep per night to maintain health. The amount of sleep needed can depend on sleep quality, age, pregnancy, and level of sleep deprivation. Insufficient sleep has been linked to weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, heart disease, and strokes. Sleep deprivation can also lead to high anxiety, irritability, erratic behavior, poor cognitive functioning and performance, and psychotic episodes. For example many of these conditions cause sleep deprivation like sleep apnea. This condition cause awakens at night because it is hard for the person to breath and the body sends signals to the brain to wake up and breath. This can cause many people to become tired due to their constant awakens at night. This is just one example that causes major sleep deprivation and a lifestyle that is not happy living to many.
