Sadiya Umar Farouq (born 5 November 1974), is a Nigerian politician and the current Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and social development.[1][2]

Appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2019,[3] Farouq is by age the youngest minister in the current federal cabinet. She served as Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugee, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) from October 2016 to August 2019.

Her work with President Buhari dates back to Buhari's days as the leader and presidential candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change when Farouq was the national treasurer of CPC and later national treasurer of the All Progressives Congress.[1]

In December 2019, Farouq was queried by the office of the president for exercising powers beyond her official briefs by employing more aides than officially approved and delaying the monthly stipend of N-Power volunteers, a social intervention program of the federal government.[4]

Cash transfer programme allegations

The conditional cash transfer regime has been plagued by inconsistencces and duplication of beneficiaries. The CTC register contained name of nonexistent persons, and the monies supposedly received by these people are routed to a pool managed by some cronies of highly placed official of the .[6]


Allegedly embezzled money

The Minister of humanitarian Affairs ans Disaster Management, Sadiya Umar Farouq has turned the National emergency management agency (NEMA) and Nort East Development Commission (NEDC) to her automated teller machine, where found are taken to her conveniences, a source at the management of the two agencies has been embrolled in multi billion of naira corruption scandals under the supervision of Sadiya Umar Farouq. Sahara reporters, a source at the Ministry said "the Minister has turned both agencies to her ATM where she collected money at any times. She took over the entire Ministry found. She didn't allow the NEMA DG, Mustapha Habib Ahmed and his NEDC counterpart Mustapha Goni Alkali, to work. "Both agencies currently have over 500 abandoned projects, Sadiya Farouq turned them to where she can walk to pluck money and go away. All founds meant for political compensation by the APC government in North East are mainly from both Agencies especially NEDC.[7]

Allegedly use public found to campaign for her husband

A group coalition of APC accused Sadiya Umar Farouq of diverting government founds to bribe the Bauchi APC delegate to nominate her husband, as governorship candidates of the party. Sahara reporters in Bauchi, on Monday Yusuf Abdullahi Ajiya the Leader of the coalition alleged the Minister was using public money to bribe the APC delegates to select her husband. Ajiya said Sadiya Umar had enlisted APC party delegates as beneficiaries of the federal government survival founds initiative instead of the downtrodden in the society. He said it was unlawful for the Minister to convert humanitarian assistance to campaign found. It has come to our notice that the Minister is using survival funds to induce delegates to choose her husband in the governorship primaries. She collected the names and account details of delegates in the name of survival founds which supposed to be for less privileged instead of delegates. [8]

School feeding fraud

The ICPC investigate Sadiya Umar Farouq for school feeding fraud during the covid-19 lockdown ended up in her private bank account. The Minister said in August that the federal government spent 500million to feed pupils during the lockdown imposed to curb the spread of covid-19 in the country. But ICPC investigate that the 2.5 billion was not use to feed the pupils.[9]
