Judika Nalon Abadi Sihotang (born in August 31, 1978) is an Indonesian singer and actor. Rose to fame by winning the runner-up Indonesian Idol season 2 in 2005, since then he has released a number of hit albums and singles that define his own romantic life. He has managed to gain admiration among the Indonesians and abroad and also has won several awards in various nominations.
During his career as a singer in the Indonesian music industry, Judika has had 7 albums with more than 15 awards including Anugerah Musik Indonesia and Anugerah Planet Muzik, as well as 3 songs selected to become soundtrack for Indonesian drama series which have high ratings in their broadcasts, more than 81 songs has become part of his works, selling multi-platinum CDs that won a Multi-Platinum Award.
Moreover, Judika has been a judge in several singing talent shows, such as consistently being a judge in Indonesian Idol, X Factor Indonesia, The Voice Indonesia, Rising Star Indonesia, as well as being a judge in the The Indonesian Next Big Star. He has also starred in six feature films including the box-office hits Si Jago Merah and The Tarix Jabrix 2.
Early life
Born and grown up in Berastagi, North Sumatra, Judika Nalon Abadi Sihotang is the sixth child of seven children from Sumanggar Sihotang and Nursia Silalahi.[1] With a father who works as a civil servant in the religious department, Judika having an affluent life.[2] Before starting a career as a singer, Judika has tried various jobs such as a shoe polisher, tire repair, and busking.[3]
His singing talent has been obvious ever since Judika in Elementary School in Berastagi. He even made a vocal group with Roy (brother), Juneidi (friend) and Jonathan (friend), they were contracted at a 5-star international hotel in Brastagi.[4][5] He also tested his abilities through the Student Voice contest Bahana Suara Pelajar in 1993. He came out as the first winner at the North Sumatra level and was quite satisfied in third place at the National level. He had studied accounting in STMIK Bina Mulya but left because want to pursue a professional career as a singer.[6][7]
Career
1998–2006: Career beginnings and Indonesian Idol
Judika took part in the Asia Bagus talent search event in 1998 in Singapore. He won 2nd place and then formed a trio group called Antero Boys which consisted of Asia Bagus participants. This group appeared on all national television networks.[5] Even so, their career is still unstable. Judika still takes a regular job as a cafe singer in Jakarta.[8]
In the seventh year of the group's establishment, in 2005 Judika tried his luck by auditioning for Indonesian Idol season 2.[8] Queued since 7 am at the Jakarta Fair until the opportunity to sing at 8 pm, Judika got a golden ticket and continued to the final round.[9] Judika succeeded to achieve the runner-up position, since then he began to expand his career in the entertainment industry.[5]

2007–2010: One, Setengah Mati Merindu and acting debut
After winning Indonesian Idol, Judika was signed to a record deal with Sony Music Indonesia in 2007 and released the first single "Bukan Rayuan Gombal" to introduce him to the music industry.[10] His debut studio album, One, was released on January 22.[11] In the next year, he starring Si Jago Merah directed by Iqbal Rais as an acting debut.[12] For his success in film, he subsequently earned an award for Favorite Newcomer Actor at the 2009 Indonesian Movie Awards.[13] Judika ever starring The Tarix Jabrix 2 with his wife Duma Riris Silalahi and the Indonesian rock band The Changcuters.[14]
After moving signed to Sony Music Indonesia in 2010, Judika returning released his second studio album Setengah Mati Merindu and produced his first single "Setengah Mati Merindu" which earned a nomination for Best Male (Artist) in 2011 Anugerah Planet Muzik.[15] The second single "Bukan Dia Tapi Aku" reached popularity in the whole of among the public in Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia.[16] The single made his return to earning a nomination for Most Popular Regional Song at the 2012 Anugerah Planet Muzik.[17]
2011–2014: Mahadewa, Mencari Cinta and Hati & Cinta
In addition as a solo singer, Judika officially joined a band formed by Ahmad Dhani, Mahadewa, in 2011 and released the first single "Cinta Itu Buta".[18][19] In 2013, he returned releasing the third album Mencari Cinta after moving signed to Sony Music Indonesia twice times. Most of the singles from the album were taken from his debut and second album, except "Magnet", "Mama Papa Larang" and "Tiada Lagi" which was recycled and popularized by Mayang Sari. With his wife Duma Riris Silalahi, he sang the song "Sampai Akhir".[20]
Judika' fourth studio album Hati & Cinta was released on November 20, 2014. The album was received a positive response from listeners.[21] "Sampai Kau Jadi Milikmu" returned and reached popularity in the Indonesian chart song and radio.[22]
In 2014 announced through Twitter that he decided out of this group and be replaced by Virzha, an Indonesian Idol season 8 finalist.[23]
2015–present: Departure from Mahadewa and became a talent search judge
In January 2016, Judika was appointed as coach in The Voice Indonesia with Agnez Mo, Kaka Slank and Ari Lasso.[24] Judika was also an expert on Rising Star Indonesia for season 2 and season 3 with Rossa and Ariel.[25]
Furthermore, "Cinta Karena Cinta" by Judika, which is adapted from Nicholas Tse's "Yin Wei Ai Suo Yi Ai".[26] This song was released as a single on June 28th, 2019 and chosen to be the theme song for one of Indonesian drama series Cinta Karena Cinta.[26] On September 25th, 2019, "Cinta Karena Cinta" became the first song the occupies the first place on Billboard Indonesia Top 100.[27] It also won the 2019 Most Popular Drama Series Soundtrack in the the SCTV Awards.
Previously, Cinta Buta is Judika's first song for the Indonesian drama series.[28] Another song from Judika "Jadi Aku Sebentar Saja" was also chosen to be the soundtrack for the drama series Cinta Yang Hilang, for the first episode to 566.[29]
In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Judika created an album Teruslah Berharap which he released through his independent label Dua Anak Deo in December 2021.[30] Apart from being inspired by the pandemic, the song "Bagaimana Kalau Aku Tidak Baik-baik Saja" was inspired by the Korean television series Crash Landing on You.[31] Within 10 months, the album sold 580,000 copies and went multi-platinum.[32]
Personal life
After being in a relationship for 6 years with Duma Riris Silalahi, he marries the love of his life on his own 35th birthday on August 31, 2013. Their wedding blessing ceremony was held at HKBP Balige Church, North Sumatra.[33] Followed by a traditional Batak reception in a field in front of Duma Riris's parents' house, while the wedding reception, in Jakarta was held on September 7th, 2013.[34] Ever since then, Judika and Duma Riris' house hold, always looks harmonious and far from bad news. They are blessed with two children, Cleo Deomora Boru Sihotang and Judeo Volante Sihotang.[35][36]
Business and ventures
On October 14, 2016, Judika and his wife Duma Riris Silalahi decided to establish a record label company, PT. Dua Anak Deo. They perpose is to provide an opportunity for young musicians to express themselves and create masterpieces as well as generate valuable competent artists in the entertainment industry.[37]
So far, there have been 5 artists that he has put into orbit, collaborating with other music label, Sony Music Entertainment, to market, Recording and produced music videos for singers.[38] A newcomer named Dnanda, Daniel Pattinama, Yan Josua, Axin and Nurlela. Judika saw the potential in Dnanda, Daniel Pattinama, Yan Josua and Axin when he was being a judge in Indonesian Idol and X Factor Indonesia.[39]
Different than the other artists recruited, Nurlela was founded by the Minister of State-owned enterprise, Erick Thohir, at PSRPD Cimahi, During a visit in October 2021. Nurlela showed her talent and stated that she idolized Judika. Erick Thohir was pretty impressed and immediately wanted to make Nurlela's dream come true by giving her a surprise meeting with the idol, Judika. During Judika and Nurlela's meeting, Judika was touched and spontaneously asked her to collaborate for a single and Nurlaela enthusiastically accepted the offer.[40] With this song, Judika wants to inspire and open up opportunities for everyone, that many people with disabilities are skilled and have many abilities, but due to physical limitations, these opportunities are limited.[41]
Artistry
Public image and influences
Apart from pursuing a solo career, in 2011 Judika also became the vocalist for Mahadewa, a band fronted by Ahmad Dhani. Since left the band in 2014, Judika has released his own hit singles, made albums of his own songs, platinum score and continue to gain achievements.[23]
Michael Learns to Rock, was surprised when Judika sang "Paint My Love" at the Rising Star Indonesia season 1 and made a duet together on stage, Michael said "I didn’t know that our songs were that good, before I heard you sing”.[42] Besides MLTR, who was surprised by Judika's distinctive voice, Malaysian diva Siti Nurhaliza was also amazed by Judika’s voice. She stated that “Judika's voice is translucent. Sharp and translucent.”[43] Nurhalizah chose Judika as one of Indonesian musicians to collaborate for a song entitled "Kisa Ku Inginkan" 2017, and won the 2018 Anugerah Planet Muzik for Best Collaboration Category.[44]
Choky Sitohang, music and sports presenter, argued that "what Judika has presented to the country is a strong capital to spread overseas wings." Judika's has very high dedication to music, which has a positive influence on young Indonesian musicians, such as Fourtwnty, who believes that "Judika is cool, a male solo singer with a voice with character." Rizky Febian also said that Judika was the figure who inspired him, with said "Judika can inspire Iki, in terms of his musicality, there is no doubt.. It's extraordinary."
Judika was one of the singers who received the title KRH (Kanjeng Raden Haryo) Kencana Ningrat from the Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace, Central Java in 2015 for he considered to have played a major role in preserving the culture of the archipelago through music. Judika revealed that thanks to Didi Kempot's song, "Stasiun Balapan", he was able to get the title from the Surakarta Palace.[45]
Voice and musical style
Judika has a powerful chest voice, wide vocal range (3 octave), and the best vocal stamina among other Indonesian male singers. Her vocal range starts from low B (B2) below middle C to B (B5) above high C. Judika can reach high C (C5), which is a high tone for men, without using falsetto.[46]
Judika's music is generally pop, rock, folk[27] and RnB[22] on several songs. Even so, he also appeared several times to performed dangdut and jazz songs.[47]
Songwriting
Most of Judika's songs are written from the story of his own love journey with his wife, Duma Riris Silalahi. Silalahi was also involved in a number of songs' creative processes.[48] Prior to his wedding, Judika written the song "Sampai Akhir", which he performed with his wife on the wedding day.[49][50]
