Koirala (कोइराला) is a common surname among upadhayay brahmin and chettri of nepal and some parts of northeast India. All Koiralas share the same gotra, Moudgalya. The first two generations used the surname “bhatta” the third generation was awarded land and given the surname “Timilsina”, 3/4 generations down one of the Timilsina was awarded land again and given the surname “kuikel”. Around 1300AD the king of dailekh awarded “ shree Krishna agnihotri (kuikel)” the land of koirali and started the surname “koirala”. Later a few generations down one part of the koirala branch started writing “Mudula Karki”. As per puran koirala are descendants of chandrabanshi rajarshi ( king and priest) rishi Maudgalya who was the descendant of king bharat and was one of the first five kings of the pachala kingdom (draupatis home). He attained brahmantatwa as well as his first born so his descendants (including koirala) are considered Brahmins. Koirala are regarded as pure brahmin with brahmin kshetriya qualities because of chandrabanshi lineage. |
