Ashleigh Barty was the reigning champion,[1] but she retired from professional tennis in March 2022.[2]

Barty's retirement and Angelique Kerber and Naomi Osaka’s absences (both due to pregnancy) meant that Victoria Azarenka and Sofia Kenin were the only former champions left in the draw. They met in the first round, where Azarenka won in straight sets. Azarenka then went on to reach the semifinals.[3]

Jeļena Ostapenko and Elena Rybakina, representing Latvia and Kazakhstan, respectively, became the first players from their countries to reach the Australian Open singles quarterfinals. Rybakina then also became the first Kazakhstani to reach the semifinals and final.[4]

Rybakina became the first woman to defeat three former major champions in a single edition of the Australian Open since Jennifer Capriati in 2001.[citation needed]
