This article is written in British English, which has its own spelling conventions (colour, travelled, centre, defence, artefact, analyse) and some terms that are used in it may be different or absent from other varieties of English. According to the relevant style guide, this should not be changed without broad consensus. |
Standing to 1m?
"Hartebeest stand to a bit over 1 m (3.3 ft)."
What does this mean? That an adult male stands about 1m at the shoulder, perhaps? And why standing to? Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:50, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
- While it had already been specified to mean "at the shoulder" in one instance, I specified it for the other as well. The "stand to" is just a stylistic choice. A similar stylistic choice is used in the featured article Cougar. öBrambleberry of RiverClan 21:30, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Hartebeest
I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Hartebeest's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
Reference named "ITIS":
- From Mongalla gazelle: "Eudorcas rufifrons albonotata". Integrated Taxonomic Information System.
- From Llama: "Lama". Integrated Taxonomic Information System. Retrieved 5 January 2013.
I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT⚡ 11:49, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
Fixed a Mistake
I just fixed a mistake of the caption under the first image. It said it was in the Serengeti in Kenya, but the Serengeti is in Tanzania, and the description of the file also says Tanzania. Jubblubs (talk) 20:14, 8 March 2016 (UTC)

de: link
Currently the link for the German language version goes to the article for the extinct variant of de:Nordafrikanische Kuhantilope. A better article would certainly be de:Eigentliche Kuhantilopen.
I tried to fix it, but I've only been editing on Wikipedia regularly for 10 years or so, and I only have a degree in engineering, so I'm obviously much too stupid to figure out how to deal with this new way of managing the language links.
Maybe someone in the know of the higher arcane workings can fix this?

- You're right, but I think the issue has to be fixed by an admin on media wiki... FunkMonk (talk) 09:59, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Was redirected to this article whilst looking for Bubalis. I specifically wanted information about B. mauretanica. Is this the same animal as the bubal hartebeest? 216.255.171.122 (talk) 21:36, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
Some author citations are incorrect
I noticed several mistakes w.r.t author citations. I can't check all of them right now, but remember that parentheses around an author citation mean that it was originally described in a different genus and also that the author does not change (other than the parentheses) when the genus is transferred.
For instance, in the synonyms:
- Antilope buselaphus Pallas, 1766
- Antilope bubalis Pallas, 1767
Since Pallas described them in the genus Antilope, there should be no parentheses.
- B. buselaphus would have the author citation (Pallas, 1766), maybe (Pallas, 1766) Lichtenstein, 1814 but certainly not just (Lichtenstein, 1814)
For the subspecies
- A. b. cokii Günther, 1884 — parentheses are incorrect as Günther described it as Alcelaphus cokii, i.e., within the same genus.
- A. b. tora Gray, 1873 also should not have parentheses.
