Background and Objectives

The Trans-Border Institute (TBI) was founded at the University of San Diego ( USD) in the fall of 1994, special thanks to the vision and leadership of former Provost, Sister Sally Furay. The USD Trans-Border institute has two overarching objectives:

1. To promote border-related scholarship, activities and community at USD.

2. To promote a positive and active leadership role for USD in the cross-border community in a manner consistent with the nature, mission and values of the university.

In order to carry out its mission, the TBI provides (and encourages others to provide) faculty, students and stuff of the University of San Diego, as well as people who live on both sides of the border, with information, contacts, seminars, opportunities for study, research grants, internship, academic, exchange partnership and service-learning opportunities.

TBI Intramural Grant Program

TBI provides grants to University of San Diego faculty, staff and students for research and activities related to the U.S.-Mexico border. Since its grant program began in 1998, TBI has given over 45 awards to USD faculty, staff and students from 21 different departments. Each year grants are awarded to USD faculty (up to $1 2,500) for scholarly research, with the remainder awarded to student, faculty and staff proposals for border-related projects and activities. Large grants are awarded in the spring, and are available for use at the start of each fiscal year (July 1) into the next school year. The deadline to submit large grant proposals is March 15. Small grants (below $500) are awarded on a rolling basis depending on the availability of funding, and are available for use during the current school year.

TBI Events

Each year TBI sponsors conferences, speakers and other events to bring attention to key border issues and US.-Mexico relations. The events are open to the entire campus community and the general public. Along with the USD Social Issues Committee, TBI cosponsors a special lecture every year to honor former Provost, Sister Salty Furay.

Outreach and Community Service

TBI assists campus organizations and programs with cross border contacts and opportunities for collaboration. In accordance with ifs mission, TBI promotes outreach and service in the cross-border community. TBI helps USD instructors and campus groups to arrange border-related talks, activities and tours. Outside groups interested in TBI-led tours or lectures should contact us.

Border Research and Resources

TBI provides research and information resources for the USD campus and the broader cross-border community. TBI publishes Nexus, an occasional newsletter distributed electronically and in hard copy. TBI’s website provides free online access to border related information for groups on and off campus. For more information, please visit out website.
