Jackson Cross Country
This is another team at Henry M. Jackson that has experienced great success, but goes unnoticed year after year; a team that has the highest state placing average of all Jackson sports. The Cross Country team. The team started in 1994 with head coach Eric Hruschka, a former state champ out of Lynnwood High School, leading the team to various state placings. Jackson started in 3A and made many state trips and returned with top 5 team placings and an individual title. Dustin Duke was the first prodigy to come out of Jackson cross country, winning the state title as a sophomore and junior in 1996 and 1997. In 2001, Jackson High was bumped up to 4A because of the increase of the student body. In 2003, Jackson was an unbeatable force with senior Caleb Knox and sophomore Jeff Helmer leading the charge. The two place first and second at the District meet and the team took home the trophy. That year Jackson was the Wesco and District champions, and placed a respectable 5th place at the State meet in Pasco. The next year, junior Jeff Helmer was injured and did not come back to the team until the Wesco championship. The team placed third at districts and placed 9th at the state meet. That spring, things took a turn for the worse. In early 2006, reports were circulating that Senior Jeff Helmer was not going to join the Jackson Track team. Coach Eric Hruschka confirmed that Helmer had not turned in the forms required to join the track team. A few weeks later, it was learned that Helmer had obtained a variance to Everett High School in Everett, Washington. Helmer had arranged to have the district athletic code waived in order for him to compete at the varsity level for his new school. Never the less, the men of the Jackson Distance squad persisted and were able to have a solid season despite losing 4 of their top seniors placing 8th in the State the following Cross Country season. And things are now looking up for these young men of Jackson despite much adversity and many tests of commitment to the team.
