This course will be offered to third and fourth year medical students to enhance their communication skills as it pertains to explaining complex medical conditions, treatments, and paradigms to non-medically trained individuals. Students will also learn how to condense information from secondary source guides into best practice guides using systematic reviews, literature reviews, and foundation papers to up date Wiki-articles.

This session will be provided by Dr. TJ Webb. Prep work to follow.

Peer Review Project

Review the list below for your peer review partner(s). Once you have identified your partner, meet with them and discuss their plans for their article. Read and review the article they have chosen and it's talk page. Then compare to the student's Sandbox to ensure that they are meeting the major content gaps and goals outlined on the talk page. Review and read their references to ensure they meet the guidelines for Wikipedia. Review the work on their Sandbox to ensure they are stating concepts in their own words to avoid plagiarism. Once you have completed your review please complete a Wikipedia in Progress Peer Review Form and email it to the student, Dr. Wombacher, and myself by Friday February 17. We will discuss this during the Wikipedia in Progress on Friday.

As you complete this project please keep the following in mind:

Accuracy in the page you are reviewing
Simplicity of language, limited use of medical jargon
Flow within sections, section headers, order of sections
Adherence to the Wikiproject medicine style guidelines
Be mindful to be respectful in your language to your peer
Identify specific areas of improved quality as well as specific areas for improvement
Share any sources which may be helpful
Be mindful of the intended audience. Provide a recommendation at the end to say if all changes are made if you would recommend the page to: Colleagues, Patients, Layperson

Assignment - Week 4 Meetings and Instructions

This is the final week of the Wikipedia course. During this week you will complete your edits to your Wikipedia article including any feedbak from your peer review. As you continue to expand and impove your work, format your article to match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Don't forget to contact Helaine or Ian if you have any questions about tone or require any help! There is a final check-list in the Editing Wikipedia article on Page 15 which may be useful for you to consult.

We have four classes this week:

1. Monday February 20th 1-3PM: The Role of the Science Communicator

Pre-reading TBD.

2. We will have three classes for students to complete their presentations (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday).

The Final In - Class Presentation

Each student must provide at 15 minute presentation. The presenation should share which article the student chose and why as well as noting any gaps, resources, structure or images that were added/changed. Students should discuss the changes they made and summary finding including what they learned and put into the article and what couldn't be put into the article and why. Students should discuss who the article is useful to now be it patients, learners or colleagues. Students should identify where Peer Review impacted their plans. Lastly students should discuss how their work afects misinformation, meeting the needs of the public, the social editing process or scientific communication.
