Grain From Ukraine (Template:Lang-uk) is a humanitarian food program that was launched on November 26, 2022, on the 90th anniversary of the beginning of the Holodomor of 1932-1933, by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to supply grain to the poorest countries in Africa.[2] The program aims to provide grain to at least 5 million people by the end of spring 2023.[3]
History
Prior to 2022, Ukraine was one of the key World Food Programme grain suppliers and the world's 4th largest grain exporter. The blockade of Ukrainian ports by the Black Sea Fleet in the first weeks of the full-scale invasion interrupted grain exports, rapidly increasing global food prices and fueling food crises, greatly increasing the risk of famine in the poorest countries.[4]
Grain exports from Ukraine were resumed within the Black Sea Grain Initiative in July and August 2022.[4] From August to November 2022, over 11 billion tons of supplies went to 38 countries, and WFP and USAID resumed humanitarian shipments to the poorest countries.[5]
The Grain From Ukraine program was first mentioned in Zelenskyi's speech at the G20 summit.[6] According to him, according to the program, Ukraine has decided to direct part of the harvested wheat, which was destined for export, to be dedicated to certain African countries where there are already problems of hunger. Part of the export grain can be purchased by states which are participating in the project. Ukraine will then supply the grain to certain African countries.[6]
As the Head of the President's Office, Andrii Yermak, emphasized, international partners will be able to simultaneously support the Ukrainian economy in a difficult situation and help African countries.[6]
On November 26, 2022, the 90th anniversary of the beginning of the Holodomor of 1932–1933, the program was officially launched.[3]
Activities
As part of the initiative, about 60 ships with Ukrainian grain are planned to be sent to some of the poorest countries in Africa by the middle of next year. One ship financed by Germany has already left for Ethiopia. The grain is also planned to be sent from the Odesa port to such "humanitarian hotspots" as Sudan, Yemen, and Somalia.[2][3]
Grain for the first two ships was purchased by Ukraine itself at the expense of state funds, and freight was paid by Germany and Japan. For other ships, grain will be bought at the expense of other countries. In particular, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has already agreed to provide up to 20 million dollars for this initiative.[2] British Foreign Minister James Cleverly also announced the allocation of additional funds for the program during his visit to Ukraine on November 25, 2022.[2]
