The Devendrakula Velalar community traditionally celebrate and initiate the temple car festivals at numerous locations, including the Perur Pateeswarar Temple,[2] the Koniamman Temple,[3] the Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam[4] and the festival at Thenthiruperai.[5]
Aravan Festival
The Devendrakula Velalars play a major part in the Aravan Festival in Coimbatore especially in Singanallur, Kurichi and Vellalore and share the adoption and death stage of Aravan, since he is believed to be the son of Arjuna and grandson of Devendra according to Hindu mythology.[6][7]
Occupation
Their traditional occupation is that of cultivation, although by the 1990s large minority of them were employed in government or private services.[8]
