Steve Bartelstein is an American television news reporter who co-anchored WABC-TV's morning and noon news shows alongside Lori Stokes. His last day on WABC-TV was Friday, March 9, 2007.
He came to WABC from CNN. He has previously worked in South Carolina, Indiana, and Oregon.
Steve began his broadcasting career as a weekend anchor at age 19 in Evansville, Indiana. He was hired at WABC-TV originally as a weekend sports anchor for the morning broadcasts in 2000. He was promoted to co-anchor WABC's weekday morning newscasts in 2001 along with the hiring of Lori Stokes, in an effort to improve WABC-TV's ailing morning news ratings. The pairing was a success as they were able to bring the newcast into the number one position in the 5-7AM and noon time slots.
He was the first WABC anchor to break the news on air that a plane had hit the World Trade Center during September 11, 2001. [1]
Mr. Bartelstein was fired by WABC on March 14, 2007 after he reportedly did not show up on set during a Good Morning America station break the prior morning to plug upcoming coverage of a fire in the Bronx, NY that killed 10 people.
He was reportedly fired, according to the NY Daily News on March 14th, for sleeping through a newsbreak to report on a house fire. As reported, this was not the first time he was absent from duty, including showing up 20 minutes after a news broadcast start time.
