The Tutor is a 2023 American psychological thriller film written by Ryan King, directed by Jordan Ross and starring Garrett Hedlund, Noah Schnapp and Victoria Justice.

Synopsis

When a professional tutor (Ethan Campbell) accepts a job at a remote mansion, he soon finds himself battling his disturbed student's obsessions, which threaten to expose his darkest secrets and unravel his carefully crafted personality.[1]

Production

In April 2022, it was announced that Hedlund, Schnapp, Justice and Weston were cast in the film and filming was underway in Birmingham, Alabama.[2]

Release

The film premiered in theaters on March 24, 2023.[3]

Reception

The film has a 19% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 26 reviews.[4]

Julian Roman of MovieWeb gave the film a mixed review and wrote, "The film suffers from major logic flaws but keeps you hooked to a pulpy climax with a devilish turn."[5]

Jon Mendelsohn of Comic Book Resources gave the film a negative review and wrote, "The Tutor is a mildly entertaining thriller that convolutes itself with too many twists."[6]

Keith Garlington of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette gave the film a positive review and wrote, "But for those able to avoid the traps of over-critiquing or even overthinking, The Tutor captures much of what people enjoy about these popular popcorn thrillers."[7]
