*If the scope of your project idea is very narrow (such as a TV show, music band, video game, etc) then you should start a task force of an existing project instead of starting a whole new WikiProject.

Template:WikiProject Council Navigation
This page can be used to gauge support for potential WikiProjects before putting a lot of effort into creating a detailed project page.
- Proposing a project
- To propose a project, write a brief description, and add it along with your name to the list below (in alphabetical order by topic). Some boilerplate you can use:
== Name of project == ; Description : [description here] ; Interested Wikipedians (please add your name) # [your name here] ; Comments
- Expressing interest
- If you're interested in any of the projects listed here, simply add your name to the appropriate list and start contributing to the relevant articles.
- Creating a project
- If your project gains support from 5-10 active Wikipedians, it could probably benefit from the organisation boost of having a proper page. Remove it from this list and follow the instructions for creating new projects.
- Requesting a project
- There may be cases where you believe that there is a pronounced need for the creation of a project which does not yet exist which you may not personally feel qualified to join. Some examples might be certain countries, disciplines, etc. In the event you are aware of such a situation, please add the relevant name to the list of projects below and see if there are any individuals interested in creating such a project.

Admin Oversight Board
Description - To try to determine if it is feasible to create a board of administrators and non-administrators, possibly with wikipedia bureaucrats and staff as well, which could act in a judicial capacity to review behavior of administrators, specifically regarding the propriety of their actions, and how such a board could be specifically constituted. The existence of such a board composed of respected non-administrators and administrators alike may be sufficient to forestall questioning of whether a decision made by it is truly fair and independent, as opposed to being a group of administrators who might be seen as acting to reduce the possibility of being sanctioned for similar actions of their own. It also might be sufficient to preempt the possibility of disaffected editors from going so far as to bring civil complaints against wikipedia as an entity or against individual administrators in particular.

- You might want to get some more feedback about this, even if others gain interest in the project. Maybe a note about this idea should be left on WP:AN? -- Ned Scott 10:55, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

- Sounds more like warmongering to me. "Warn me again, and I'll drag you in front of the Oversight committee!" --InShaneee 22:00, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, I thought of it as more of the opposite. I personally imagine that most of the complaints would be dismissed summarily for lack of evidence or for perhaps small criticism of the admin in question (maybe for using a remotely potentially insulting phrase, for instance), but the simple fact of having an independent body doing so would, I hope, eliminate the number of complaints about admin collusion and suchlike. Much like the average police board, it might investigate a lot of complaints, but in almost all cases they find that there has been no real abuse of power. Also, I don't think that it would necessarily have any real authority, other than that given it by the community as a whole. However, the mere presence of the body and the rebukes it would offer over time would I think be enough to prove that it is independent, and thus hopefully avoid complainants indulging in other procedures, like lawsuits (as has been mentioned before by others), defamation of the admin in question, etc. etc. etc. Badbilltucker 02:38, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- First of all, I can garentee you that the second this is created, there will be accusations that it's run by 'the cabal'. Secondly, this smacks of a judicial system. Regardless of what power it may or may not be given at creation, you're asking it's members to weigh judgement on other admins. We do have processes to determine this, and simply put, we need less lawyering around here, not more. --InShaneee 16:01, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
- No disagreement to the last point. As stated above, the primary purpose of the group would be to create a body which by its existence would serve to help keep real lawyers and lawsuits getting involved in wikipedia's actions. Badbilltucker 16:23, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
- That's what OFFICE does, though. --InShaneee 00:31, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, that restricts itself only to content. The possibility of a disgruntled editor who has been banned and later files a legal action based on that ban has been raised more than once, and in the event that any admin were named as a defendant in such a lawsuit even once, and has to hire council to defend his/her actions, I think there is a very real chance of total chaos erupting. That is what this proposal is trying to prevent ever happening. Badbilltucker 00:41, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but I don't see how a wikiproject with no official power on the wiki could have any bearing on a legal proceeding. --InShaneee 03:25, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- I can see this working, It would have the power of the community, and if enough people speak in favor, or not in favor of something, it cannot be ignored. DTGardner 17:22, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

African art
Description WikiProject African art would be dedicated to creating and improving a battery of articles on African art, art movements, artists, curators, collectors, and museums. Ancestors of Modern Games
- Description
- Basicly this project will revolve around gathering information on older games. Games that were not classics but inspired them. In other words forgotten games. It will also be for placing new more detailed information into already exsisting games, as well as adding new titles that were never seen here but nonetheless inspired game developers to make better games! One small paragraph is not enough for a game that took months or years to develop! I am calling to all Old time gamers and those younger ones that have acctually played the game to speak up and participate on this project. Bring back the wisdom and dignity of our older and more forgotten games! If we dont then they will remain forgotten.Yes this project will include old computer games and counsle games, along with sport games and board and table games that exsisted even before video games were created. Tetris, checkers, and even jousting and games from midevil eras and eras older are to be included. If not for these Modern Game Ancestors people would of had a very boring evolution and many games today would more then likely not exsist! In other words All Old Games will be helped by this project. Maverick423 20:38, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Update I have checked the Gaming project and suggested doing this however they say that they cover this issue already; however whenever i adress them on such issues as far as updating and adding infomation to other older games, they are ignored. this is leading me to making a temporary project page as clearly the video gamming project doesnt care about older games as they state they do Maverick423 16:53, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Assessment of unassessed articles
- Description
- There is currently a great deal of work being done across projects to assess articles for the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, and that's great, but a great number of articles are not currently tagged by projects which assess for this, and may never be. Therefore, the purpose of this project would be to tag and assess articles not currently covered by an assessing project, for the purposes of the Version 1.0 Editorial Team.

Great idea. Questions come to mind, however. Specifically, would this group basically set up other projects which are not yet doing assessments, and do the assessments for them, or would it have it's own banner and include assessment criteria there? Personally, I would favor the former. If so, I would certainly welcome rolling the proposed Project Support Services project proposal into this one, one way or another. Badbilltucker 18:07, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- I had originally planned the latter, however the former seems a better idea. The group could probably get away with also having it's own banner for articles with no project whatsoever, including some quite important ones; Hell comes to mind. Blood Red Sandman Open Up Your Heart - Receive My EviLove 18:36, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, I myself am in the process of doing all the religion related articles, and just haven't gotten to Hell yet. However, I do enthusiastically support the idea. Badbilltucker 18:46, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yep. In cases where there's an existing project banner to use, it would probably be better to add that than to create some generic one. Kirill Lokshin 19:32, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- However, the project could create it's own banner to use in addition to the other applicable project banners. Badbilltucker 17:04, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- What would be the point? The articles only need to get assessed by a single project in order to enter the system; having an additional banner that's not actually tied to a functional subject-area project doesn't seem useful. Kirill Lokshin 17:07, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- I was thinking of something like the existing automatic stub template, possibly with even similar wording. Or maybe a similar addition to existing banners along the same lines as that. Or maybe a small one similar to those used by the Wikipedia:WikiProject League of Copyeditors or similar to indicate that the work had been done by the project. I small three or four line ad, as it were. Also, some projects explicitly say only project members can assess articles, and they might want to know why outsiders assessed the articles for them.Badbilltucker 17:20, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- For articles not covered by any project wahtsoever, these would need a seperate banner until a suitible project could be found. I guess part of the scope of this project would be to locate projects for such articles. Blood Red Sandman Open Up Your Heart - Receive My EviLove 17:22, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- It would probably work best if we ran User:PockBot or something similar on a given category we know falls within the scope of a given project, and assess those articles which aren't listed as being assessed yet. Badbilltucker 17:37, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- Please do! Certain projects would be very happy to have help with getting untagged articles tagged and/or assesed. :-) Kirill Lokshin 17:57, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how mnay people we would need to get this to go, considering it isn't at this point so much a project as a function. There is now a {{AAA}} template which could be added to articles to indicate who did the assessment. We'd still need some sort of project page. I've contacted the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team regarding this, and am awaiting a response. Badbilltucker 15:17, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

(Unindent) Sorry I took a while to respond to the above request, I got distracted while working on this earlier. (We're also beta testing Version 0.5 :)). This idea would certainly be an excellent addition to the 1.0 project. We are moving from a manual system of picking articles (as used at Version 0.5) to an automated system (outlined here), to allow us to get much larger collection (V0.5 was only 2000 articles). One ongoing concern with the automated system is that there may be gaps in our selection, if we don't have projects representing that subject area. For example, we have about 2000 Pennsylvania articles (1000 assessed) to pick from, but no Maryland articles. This can affect even broader subject areas - we have Dance and Film covered, but many fine arts like painting and sculpture are not (I think!).
I think I would like to combine the efforts of this proposed group with WP:WVWP (Work via WikiProjects), which was very active (indeed WVWP + Oleg set up the bot assessment scheme), but which has lain dormant since the fall because of people's commitments elsewhere (e.g. to Version 0.5). People have also become less interested in contacting WikiProjects now that the projects are coming to us at the rate of about one per day! It is clear that the focus of WVWP should shift from trying to contact all projects, and switch to trying to focus inactive projects. Traditionally (i.e., last year!) many of these functions you describe have fallen to WVWP - we have recorded information manually from projects that are not using the bot, we have helped projects get started with the bot, and sometimes just given general guidance (the role now played by this council). We did a lot of assessments for projects that were new to the concept - Doctor Who, Adelaide, all sorts - just to help them get started. Once they had some examples of assessment of their own articles, they were able afterwards to perform their own assessments and start using the bot. Tagging articles that fell outside the jurisdiction of any active project was less relevant when we only had 50 projects using the bot; it is an excellent idea, and it is a natural evolution for WVWP to work on this.
Therefore I would like to propose that the 1.0 team and the Council collaborate closely on this, with perhaps a joint team. Two ways to do this:
- Rewrite the goals of WVWP to incorporate the new modus operandi, and also bring it under joint jurisdiction of WP:COUNCIL and WP:1.0. Much of the existing infrastructure can be used and adapted. (By the way, one of my next projects is to write a site map for the rabbit warren that is Wikipedia 1.0, that may help!).
- Set up a completely new project under WP:COUNCIL as described above, with a more narrow focus than WVWP, but work closely with WVWP.
I strongly favor the former, mainly because I think we don't want to multiply groups when we may only have a couple of active people in each! Also, despite our inactivity in recent months, there are still occasional edits to our manually listed tables and questions on our talk page. About a year ago we contacted all the WikiProjects ("all" as of Oct '05, much fewer than today) so the community has heard of us. Tables like Philosophy & Religion and (even worse) Humanities) desperately need updating, but there is a lot of valuable information on these tables that should be used. I'd like to find some way of expanding & updating lists like this bot list, which is (in effect) "All the Arts article assessments that come from projects not using the bot". It can be a lot of work, but in fact a couple of us were able to achieve a great deal when it was a major focus for us. What do others think? Walkerma 19:55, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
- I think that sounds brilliant, probably by far the best way to do this. I too favour your former idea, much better to run as part of the project then to become a seperate one in our own right; it will probably get off the ground quicker that way, and gain more contributers, too. Also, the fact that the project has already existed for some time, and is well known, will greatly help us. Another deciding factor is that WVWP is on the verge (i.e. may do in a year or two, seems fine for now) of going inactive, which would be a great shame as it was a highly successful Wikipedia group, whereas this would keep the old project going, just under a new direction in adition to it's present duties. Anime conventions
Description : Basically with the amount of Anime conventions out there today, some of the articles are stubs and are horrible un-sourced. Anime Expo, Otakon, and Fanime would be all examples of large conventions that are most definitely notable, but do need some work.

- Concerned about two things here: sourcing and systemic bias. How many of these things get reported in reliable sources? The big ones? The little ones? Also, I have concerns that conventions in non-Japan and non-Western countries will be left out (but I'd say that's probably typical, yay for cynicism), possibly some of the non-big Japanese ones will be left out too. Antarctica
Description: This proposed WikiProject would deal with the continent of Antarctica. As, seemingly, most of the information available relating to the continent is tied closely to the geography of the continent, I believe that the project will deal primarily with the geography of Antarctica, and, to a lesser extent, the climate, the scientific research taking place in Antarctica, the wildlife of the area, and some geological history.

WikiProject:Appreciation
- Description
- This is a proposal for a WikiProject in which is similar to the random smiley award but it is not random award, it's main purpose would be to recognise peoples contributions to our encyclopedia, no matter how many or how minor they are, as-well as to make wikipedians know that all of the contributions are greatly appreciated and therefore creating optimism on wikipedia and encouraging further contributions. If there were enough active members I'd be willing to create templates for members to distribute onto other users' talk pages just saying about the project and thanks for their contributions. I'd be willing to help on this myself and create the project page etc and hopefully make it a success with many members.Tellyaddict 15:45, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

- I'm all for improving articles, but I'm concerned that the goal of this project could end up being to supply "care sheet" type information to articles, which falls specifically under what Wikipedia is not, and there is already a draft project for bird related articles. This could easily be organized into a set of standards for those birds kept in captivity within that project. -Dawson 17:40, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- I think that ornithology is sufficiently different to aviculture to need a separate project. The project would aim provide verifiable information in an encyclopaedic format. It would not aim to give advice and it should not give advice on the wiki. Snowman 18:03, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

- Wouldn't this be something that the Council could assist with? I would help out with this new WikiProject if it was formed but I don't know if a Project with such a narrow focus is needed.↔NMajdan•talk 16:16, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, this seems like something that could be better done directly through the Council; we probably don't need more "meta-WikiProjects" at this stage. Kirill Lokshin 18:27, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
- Setting this up as a specific task for Council would probably be more efficient. -- Ned Scott 18:35, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think it's up to anyone but the projects to design, make, and handle their own banners. Any effort by the Council to manage the banners would have to be approved by all the projects, IMO. --MPD T / C 21:44, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
- I was under the impression that this was intended as an effort to help projects with the technical aspects of banners, not an attempt to control them. (FWIW, I don't like the latter idea either.) Kirill Lokshin 21:53, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
- The word "standards" in the description brings up thoughts of cookie-cutter banners. Technical aspects and help is perfectly fine and would be appreciated, I'm sure. Perhaps then, it could be a sub-project of the Council, rather than its own project. I define banners as the template at the top of a page...so it could be broadened to be a more "Templates" sub-project, which would help with all templates needed by a project(unless that's what's implied and I'm not on the same page). Just to clarify. :) --MPD T / C 22:03, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
- In that case you might just want to collaborate a revamp of WP:TPT, which could be a lot more useful than it currently is. -- Ned Scott 22:19, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

- When I say standards I'm talking about a naming convention, a starter template that projects can expand and customize and things like that. This project would not tell projects what there banners should look like, or how they should work, but how they can improve and make them work more effectively.— miketm - Queen WikiProject - 02:51, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- In reply to Kirill, seeing as how unchecked wikiproject template spamming has now reached levels where it is starting to noticeably degrade the usability of talk pages, I think some measure of control/regulation is necessary. However, it is inappropriate for the wikiproject council to define those standards. As the TFD nomination has shown, the wikiproject council and its members have an obvious bias in favor of wikiprojects, and against what is in the best interests of the average reader and contributor (who are not wikiproject members). Or, as I previously noted, the NRA should not be writing gun control legislation. Raul654 15:21, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- There are some bold asseertions here. If this were an article I would definitely tag Raul's statement with {{fact}}. I'd like to see any evidence Raul can provide to back up the claim that "the wikiproject council and its members have an obvious bias...against waht is in the best interests of the average reader and contributor". I think that is a scandalous claim. Force10 15:09, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
- Nice to see that AGF is alive and well these days. Kirill Lokshin 15:50, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- It's not their good faith I doubt - I don't doubt that they mean well. It's the fact that they have an insurmountable conflict of interest. Already, there's at least one bot wikiproject-tagging hundreds of articles per day, and the best solution the wikiproject council has come up with to date is the small=yes non-solution. The *last* thing I want is the wikproject council forming some sort of banners meta-project with airs of authority, setting "standards" which obviously favor its own interests (that is, many large and obtrusive banners which are displayed by default) above the interests of the community at large (which prefers small, uncluttered talk pages). Raul654 16:03, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- Insurmountable conflict of interest indeed! It's not like Council members had any role in developing {{WikiProjectBanners}} or anything like that. I would have thought that our sincerity, at least, would not be in doubt; but it seems that I was mistaken. C'est la vie, as it were. Kirill Lokshin 16:21, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- I would only note to the above editor that the person to whom he seemingly directly addressed the above comment created the User:Kirill Lokshin/Sandbox/Template14 template, which if used would probably do more to decrease clutter than just about anything else I've seen to date. John Carter 16:19, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- "which if used would probably do more to decrease clutter than just about anything else I've seen to date." - then I guess you haven't seen Template:WikiProjectBanners, which ((unlike the above) is already deployed and used on 600-or-so articles. Raul654 16:23, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- No, actually, I have seen it, as is evidenced by my comment here. The template above referenced by me goes a step further, though, and actually displays the projects' names, something the example you cited does not do, and, at least potentially, decreases the need for interested parties to ever have to see the specific banners, and could, at least potentially, replace them in some cases somewhere down the road. - Um... would WikiProject Banners have a banner? *head asplodes* No, seriously, I don't think this is a good idea. Not even a good idea for the Council, either. This should be done in the Village Pump. Titoxd(?!?) 23:10, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think we should have this at all. It is not fair for one WikiProject to have authority over how other WikiProjects use banners. Johntex\talk 15:03, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
- I like this idea if and only if one of the goals of the project (besides regulating banner styles and whatnot) would be to assist WikiProjects in specializing their banners (with the complicated code most of us haven't learned) to best meet the needs of each project. I know my project could benefit from someone with technical expertise. KSchutte 22:03, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

The focus of this WikiProject would be to work on Bleach (manga) and get it to GA, or possibly even FA, status; copy-edit all Bleach-related pages in need; italicize and define terms borrowed from the Japanese (examples being: benihime = "crimson princess"; zangetsu = "moon cutter"; senbonzakura = "a thousand cherry blossoms"; etc.), as per Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Foreign terms and italicize every instance of Bleach; and much more.

- Why not create a work group under WP:ANIME similar to the Conventions Work Group? Do we really need a WikiProject for every major anime series? --Farix (Talk) 15:48, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
- I guess it doesn't really matter if it's a work group or its own seperate WikiProject. // PoeticDecay 15:53, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
And yes, I guess that major anime series could have their own WikiProject. That way, you could focus more on that series and look at the to-do stuff of that project, rather than have them bunched up on the main Anime project, I guess. And besides, the anime series that have their own project are very well known and are major. Note that there aren't that many of those kinds.— ♥Tohru Honda13♥ 16:41, 18 February 2007 (UTC)- Okay, I agree with the rest, this project should be a subpage of WP:ANIME. But I still like the idea of this project... ♥Tohru Honda13♥ 00:53, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, the anime being major or not doesn't really have a lot to do with it. Being something like a task force would still allow individual focus on Bleach, but wouldn't require re-inventing the wheel like making new templates or over-all guidelines. -- Ned Scott 07:39, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
- There doesn't seem to be any real need for a separate Wikiproject. Centralized discussion can be mantained at the talk page for Bleach (manga) or the anime Wikiproject.
- I agree with the others' sentiment: it makes more sense to be a task force under WP:ANIME than to make a new project. The focus of the proposed project is too narrow, IMHO, to be worth all the overhead an entirely new project requires. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 20:02, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
- Too broad of a project: should just be a subpage and/or taskforce as part of the anime project. Wikipedia isn't a fan club. Just because you like something enough, doesn't mean a project should exist for it. RobJ1981 08:23, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- I personally don't see what's so wrong about it. Come on, we have a Digimon Wikiproject and we can't have a Bleach one? Give me a break. If this is rejected, there better not be a Naruto WP anytime soon. Hitsugaara 06:18, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- As a very active participant of WikiProject Digimon (that's right, I said it) I take issue with that comment. I've noted many times in the past that Digimon has an active project not because Digimon is important, but because there's a lot of stuff to clean up. The work load itself gave the project life. At one point we had almost 1,000 articles for Digimon.. right now we're doing a mass merge and helping all articles to comply with WP:WAF, WP:FICT, etc. It doesn't matter if the show is good or lame or small or big, sometimes there's a lot of stuff to clean up. I've even said that I could easily see the Digimon project becoming just a task force once the bulk of the work is done. If Bleach has that kind of work load, then go right ahead and make it a WikiProject. -- Ned Scott 07:27, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, thinking more about it, there's really no reason WP:DIGI couldn't do the same work as a task force. I guess you could say the real reason WP:DIGI is it's own project is because the idea of task forces has only recently been given major promotion, and wasn't known as an option when it was starting. -- Ned Scott 07:30, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

- As per the note at the top of this page: If the scope of your project idea is very narrow (such as a TV show, music band, video game, etc) then you should start a task force of an existing project instead of starting a whole new WikiProject. What's the big issue with a taskforce instead? Not everything should have projects just because people propose it, and there is some interest for it. Also, the thought of "because this has it, this one should too" isn't reasonable logic to create a new project. RobJ1981 06:25, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- That note was added after I proposed the project. With that aside, I already said above that I don't care if it's a task force or its own seperate WikiProject. // DecaimientoPoético 12:31, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

I've been working on the Wiki for Bo-bobo for the last year and its been one thing after another in adding pages and information, with some pages with too much information and others with false stuff thrown in. While me and a few other editors have been working for a while to figure out what to do, I guess we've become as chaotic as the show. -StrangerAtaru 16:12, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Comments:
- This is, in theory, a good idea. But it will have to be kept to some academic standards. I've been hoping for more educated Wikipedians taking an interest in Cambodia and adding to the articles. However, I find most of the people wishing to contribute to the Cambodia/Khmer articles are not familiar with WP:V, WP:NOR, or WP:RS. Most, in fact, seem to be Khmer high school students who add legends or beliefs as fact or Khmer POV pushers who blame the Thai or the Vietnamese for all of Cambodia's problems throughout history and want to remove anything percieved as "negative" from the articles. With so few academics specializing in Southeast Asia here at Wikipedia (or anywhere for that matter), I'm afraid that having a project like this will group those sorts of people into one place, giving them the power to dominate consensus. While projects are excellent vehicles for article improvement when there are many academics around, I fear, in this case, it may serve to bring down the quality of the articles. Please convince me otherwise, because I am excited about the opportunity to work with others to constructively build the Khmer-related articles.--William Thweatt Talk | Contribs 16:31, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi William. Just want to let you know that I share your idea. We, as a wikiproject, have to prove ourselves be as much academic and neutral as possible. Unfortunutely, we Southeast Asian were taught and raised up in strong nationalistic and ethno-centric environments. As a Thai person, I have seen many nationalist-go-ugly kind of comments countless times, from Thai, Khmer, or other people. It is sad that this kind of thinking takes over academic standards sometimes. So, I think this issue has to be addressed somehow in the project page and make it clear that what our standards are. This is particularly crucial, as there are many online sources or even some mainstream Southeast Asian media that promote nationalist versions of history over the academic ones. It should be made clear that those sources are, in most cases, not credible or citable. Cheers. --Melanochromis 18:55, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
- We have the exact same problem with WikiProject Myanmar (Burma). The high schoolers and those wishing to honestly contribute we encourage and direct as per Wikipedia method. Much more insidious is our resident POV pusher, made all the more so that our repeated attempts to bring sanction so that he acts reasonably have fallen on deaf ears. This is particularly bad as the nation is not free, and in our project this takes up a lot of time cleaning up after him, or fighting his constant attacks, that we could be spending doing something productive. If you can find some way to enforce a standard, please, we want in! Chris 06:52, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Cantopop Music
- Description
- My Wikiproject is based on information on Cantonese Music. (See Cantopop) This WikiProject includes information of Hong Kong singers, songs, and albums. This WikiProject would help Wikipedia by adding more information, and improving stub articles about Hong Kong's cantopop music.
- Interested Wikipedians (please add your name)
- Comments (Any questions? I would be glad to answer them.)
- Is this WikiProject necessary? Express your opinion?
A:Yes,it will give more information on cantopop music and it will sure make people understand about cantopop music,it will also help Wikipedia because we will make more articles and improve the stubs.
- How are you going to improve the stubs?
A:we will research on more in formation on the topic and extend the article to improve it.
- How big is your coverage of this WikiProject? Does it extend to as far as 1930s, to the early developement? If not, this WikiProject, to me, would be seemed pointless, as the developement of Cantopop in the early ages is important.
A:My Wikiproject's coverage includes music of Hong Kong Singers and albums and chinese songs. We will include 1930's music, the history of Chinese songs and the development of music.we will include topics like singers, songs, albums, history of music and the music of long ago.To accomplish our goal,we need your help to work on this.
- Wouldn't it be a better idea to expand it to Project Chinese Pop? That way you snag the Mandopop fans as well, which would get you more support for the project.
Central California Schools
Description: I have noticed that schools, particularly in Central California, have aging information, disorganized articles, or just plain nothing. There needs to be a foundation to standardize these articles, and make sure that there is adewuate information for each one. If this succeeds, I will also submit proposals for WikiProjects for Northern and Southern Cal Schools. There would be seperate groups (within the Central Cal School WikiProject) dealing with the San Francisco Bay Area, the Stockton, CA-Sacramento, CA Area, the Lake Tahoe, CA-Yuba City, CA Area, the Merced, CA-Modesto, CA Area, the Mono Lake-Yosemite Village, CA Area, the San Rafael, CA-Cloverdale, CA Area, and finally, the San Andreas, CA-Toiyabe, CA Area.

WikiProject Cite
Description This project basically aims to find citations for articles in Category:Articles lacking sources with templates {{unreferenced}} and {{primarysources}}. Also, it would make a new template, ({{refformat}} or {{properref}} maybe) that would indicate an article with sources, but not in the proper references format. Many articles have their citations as external links like this [1]. This would put the article in a category and members of the this WikiProject could change it to the proper format. We could also work on Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced GA/Nominations, a list of articles that woul be GA if they have citations.

- Well, we are faced now with divergent schools regarding the roots of the Cold War [2]; we now find ourselves bringing in a large group of articles pre-1945 that had an important impact on policy decisions in whats called the early Cold War period. The two editors that have signed on are already working in this particular area. Nobs02 17:44, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- Meh. I meant that "history" was implicit; the Cold War being over, everything dealing with it is by definition an aspect of history. It doesn't really matter too much, though. (In any case, it ought to be Wikipedia:WikiProject Cold War history, as WikiProject titles follow sentence case.) Kirill Lokshin 19:34, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Color Cleanup
- Description
- The color articles are really messy with a lot of irrelevent or otherwise not encyclopedia worthy content, especially in the "culture" segments. These tend to assume a single culture for all of Humanity and have a lot of unnecessary information. The goal of this project would be to improve the quality of the color articles. Well written and cited sections for the symbolism of colors would be heavily cleaned up.

Costa Rica
Description: This is a proposal for a project aiming to the improving and expanding of Costa Rica-related articles. Articles such as List of schools in Costa Rica and Battle of Rivas (which are extremely important to understand Costa Rica's history and social structure) are left in a permanent stub condition and left with none or vague info. Other institutions, such as Saint Mary High School, have taken of Wikipedia's lack of information about Costa Rica to set up personal web pages or biased articles about themselves. This project would aim to improve and radically change this articles until they are in a professional and unbiased format.

Devil May Cry is a growing series both in game numbers and popularity, sometimes it's a shame to see the status of some of the pages belonging to this saga, by creating this project I make an compromise to mantain the pages in top shape free of vandalism and speculation and hopefully raise some of them to Good Article status, thanks for your time. -Dark Dragon Flame 05:59, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- You guys might want to try becoming a task force (probably of WP:CVG), something we're trying to promote more often as an alternative to starting WikiProjects from the ground up. Basically you get all the benefits of a focused editing group, but with less hassle and not having to worry about starting from scratch. -- Ned Scott 07:58, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- Let's wait longer to see how many people want to become part of a project if they aren't that many we become a task force, I consider project because of the growing tendency of the series you see now it's not only games but also manga, books, novels and anime the info on these will keep growing and they will eventually require their own pages thus expanding the focus of this, about the work part I really enjoy doing that kind of work so that's not really a worry, anyways thanks for your suggestion.-Dark Dragon Flame 08:10, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- Too broad of a project: should just be a taskforce as part of the CVG project. Wikipedia isn't a fan club. Just because you like something enough, doesn't mean a project should exist for it. RobJ1981 08:22, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

- That would require fusing all existent projects only based in videogames that are actually smaller than what this can be, this isn't just video games the anime portion will have an own article and who knows how far that will extend and how many pages will be born from that and my aproach is for a serious project not a fan club fanboy edit fest. -Dark Dragon Flame 08:36, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- If you really think it would work then go for it, but remember that sometimes making a narrow project can make things more complicated and spread out. In the past we've had many of these projects start up but didn't really go anywhere, and just made it harder to find active guidelines and discussion. You also don't always have to centralize something by topic, in that maybe the video game articles will be fine under WP:CVG and maybe the anime articles will be fine under WP:ANIME. So give it some thought and try to choose the path that will best serve the articles, and if you still think a WikiProject is the way to do it, then go for it. -- Ned Scott 08:55, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- After reading the discussion I am leaning more towards this "taskforce" idea. I haven't read up on what that entails yet, but to my mind what this topic needs is some kind of reviewable set of guidelines and a central page for discussion of the franchise. In other words, a structure of some sort for future editors to fall back on if and when those of us signing up are no longer able to contribute. --Boradis 21:03, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- No point at making a Devil May Cry wikiproject. It's still a relatively small franchise compared to the likes of Resident Evil, Mega Man and Street Fighter (none which have wikiprojects). I do however propose a Capcom wikiproject, which is more broad (I know there's already a Capcom task force, but I think it could expanded to a Wikiproject).Jonny2x4 01:51, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- I think Jonnny has a point. A Capcom project for all games that are by Capcom: Street Fighter, Mega Man, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and so on, is a bigger scope and works much better than just a single series project. RobJ1981 02:18, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- No Support Sorry, but this would be a little pointless. The Devil May Cry articles, while they do require some work, can't be expanded much more than they have been. About the only things which *might* warrant an article would be the official manga they released and the upcoming anime, both of which could be covered by a Devil May Cry (series) article. There's also a Capcom Task Force already, and it'd be a simple matter to create templates for Devil May Cry. Starting a whole new Wikiproject would be far more work than it's worth. I'm pretty much finished with my wikibreak, and I'd prefer it if I spent that time improving the DMC2 article than organizing a Wikiproject to improve the DMC2 article. Cheers, Lankybugger 15:30, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- I've gone ahead and added some useful information to the Capcom Task Force page. Cheers, Lankybugger 15:39, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- If DMC should not have a Wiki Project, why should individual anime like one piece get one ( I dont have the link, its on the talk page). I think if there is enough info and information, then it is justified. After all, there are characters, storylines, weapons, etc. that can be written on, and with more detail than a normal wiki article. Quatreryukami 20:25, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- That one's easy. One Piece, to use your example, is a LONG anime. It currently stands at a staggering 447 individual chapters (each as long as a monthly comic book release), with the anime having a similarily lengthy number of episodes at 299. The series has also seen the production of 8 movies (many, if not all of which have seen theatrical release), a Trading Card Game, and 26 seperate video game releases. This doesn't delve into artbooks, soundtracks, novels, action figures, or any of the other items typically released with an anime of this size. To put that on a scale you might be familiar with, One Piece is nearly as big as the entire Dragon Ball series.
- Now, compare those figures to Devil May Cry's figures. Devil May Cry has seen the release of... 3 video games. 4 if you count the Special Edition of DMC3 seperate from the regular edition, 5 if you include the upcoming DMC4, and 7 if you include the cameos Dante has in Viewtiful Joe 1 and Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble. Devil May Cry has an anime in production which will likely last one season (if it's not just a feature-length). Likewise, it's seen the release of a very limited run Manga and a few action figures. The scope of the entire Devil May Cry series, unfortunately, is just a drop in the bucket compared to large scale manga/anime productions like Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, etc... Each series I've named beats the entire number of games the DMC series has released on pretty much ANY of the platforms for which they've had games produced. Cheers, Lankybugger 15:15, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

- About 82 countries done so far.
- I think other editors might be more likely to support the possible project if it were to expand its scope a little. Certainly, I do not yet know of a Wikipedia:WikiProject Diplomacy, which could cover the existing diplomatic missions, former diplomatic missions, diplomats' biographies, diplomatic history, and so on. In the process, of course, specific articles relating to each nation's individual existing missions would be pivotal. Badbilltucker 17:02, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks Badbilltucker. The intention would only to focus on the diplomatic networks of each country, i.e: where they are, and have a consistent and publically endorsed format. Additional details like current or prior ambassadors or other details is possible later (some articles have this information already) but it would be laborious to keep current. - So noted. This project, if created, would only try to supplement any existing projects within its scope, perhaps with assessment, peer review, and additional collaboration, and only actively involve themselves in the articles of another project if that other project becomes deleted or inactive. It's primary focus would only be for those countries whose articles are not yet supported by any project. Badbilltucker 20:43, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
- Please see my comment down at #Southern Africa about the inclusion of Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Zambia in the scope of this project. This project has quite a wide scope already, and those countries are, in my experience, nearly always referred to as Southern Africa. (See also the article East Africa and its accompanying image.) Meanwhile, seeing as South Africa already has a project, and the other countries have few active contributors, a larger scope might benefit WikiProject Southern Africa. This project would focus its efforts primarily on those Eastern European countries not already included within the scope of other WikiProjects.
- I would suggest that the project should concentrate on issued whose scope is broader than one particular nation. Cooperation is particularly needed in articles about history (wars, battles, rulers etc.), politics (international relations), geography (transnational regions, border towns), culture (common traits in national cultures of the region), languages and the like. I also think that Central Europe would be a more appropriate name. And that German-speaking user should be invited. — Kpalion(talk) 10:54, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
- Maybe a good idea. However, the guy who first proposed the project seems to have gone bye-bye. On that basis, I am creating the project page, and I am more or less following the specs he gave above. As stated above, the project will deal primarily with articles that don't already fall within the scope of any specific national projects. In time, if specific national projects are created, that would probably eventually lead to the project focusing exclusively on trans-national issues. John Carter 00:28, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

- How would this project be different from Wikipedia:WikiProject Holidays? John Carter 16:45, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
very easy. Holidays are usally reconized by the nation that holds them Ex. Christmas. what this project is about is Festivals that are held during the year that are ussally not reconized by the nation; (although some of them are but they are not a holiday) they are held by a community or state. these usally are based on the culture majority that are in the area where its held. therefore some people out of the community wont know about it unless they visit that community or are invited. this project will attempt to close that gap so that people from other communitys or even nations for that matter can learn about each other. - Sorry, my mistake. This is what I meant. On WikiProject Dallas, the vote differed between keeping the project about Dallas itself or Dallas and its suburbs. No one voted to expand the project to include Fort Worth as well, which was one of the options. --Stallions2010 22:52, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

- Possibly name project WikiProject North American Football (Soccer) but suggest we just add a sub project to Wikipedia:WikiProject Football since it's already established. Jazznutuva 06:28, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with the name suggestion. I'm not clear on the structure of WikiProjects - when a subProject is better, when it should be its own thing, etc., so I'll defer to the experts on that. Bill Oaf 13:27, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- You don't want to say "the USA and Canada"; see guidelines at Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Acronyms and abbreviations: "When including the United States in a list of countries, do not abbreviate the “United States” (for example, “France and the United States”, not “France and the U.S.”)." I'm good with North America which you can easily defines as the United States and Canada. Existing articles on soccer specific to the United States and Canada use "soccer" rather than "football" and I think that is consistent with Wikipedia principles regarding spelling and usage, but that is certainly a good topic for discussion if we had a project page. Canadiana 15:15, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- I think the title should definitley be Wikiproject North American Soccer as in North America football is football. м info 23:57, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Free images
Images can be divided between free and non-free ones. Recently, there has been a push to eliminate the non-free ones that, apparently, can be recreated. However, until now I have seen many places with suggestions about how to request free images, but not a project to coordinate efforts. Because of this I am giving the first push to WikiProject Free Images, aimed at centralizing discussion about free images. Currently, it is situated at User:ReyBrujo/WikiProject Free Images, but with enough positive feedback and help, it will be moved into the Wikipedia namespace.
The WikiProject aim is broad: first and foremost, educate users about the benefits of free images, but also to teach the differences between free licenses when applied to images. Aside this, the WikiProject will focus in replacing the current fair use images with free ones of good quality, by contacting the media, agencies, publishers or other copyright holders as necessary. It would keep a list of requested images to different organizations, with the different steps that had been taken and the different replies. It will also have an index of all the images that had been donated by these organizations, so that they are able to review their contributions. Also, the members of the WikiProject would review the usage of these images in Wikipedia, verifying that attributions are applied at all times when requested by the copyright holder.
This WikiProject was given as a thought during the Wikipedia:Elimination of Fair Use Rationale in Promotional Photos discussion, and since apparently there has not been a similar one, I decided to try it out. -- ReyBrujo 18:22, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

- I had started this page as an effort to develop as a part of Wikipedia culture, but later decided it might be a good idea to convert it into a voluntary wikiproject rather than a process or policy. Thus I would request a fresh look and input on whether this is a good idea for a wikiproject (if judged not, I will delete it promptly). I just wanted a good way in which Wikipedians can celebrate the achievements and growth of Wikipedia together and feel proud of themselves and their colleagues for performing thankless jobs. A hall of fame seeks to remember and celebrate the contributions of those users who have helped fellow editors and this project in a way that should not be forgotten and deserves some form of permanent remembrance, especially as an example for future Wikipedians. I think such an endeavor is necessary in wake of the end of Esperanza and other civility projects. Rama's arrow 19:32, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

- Too broad of a scope. It should be a taskforce as per what the top of the page says: If the scope of your project idea is very narrow (such as a TV show, music band, video game, etc) then you should start a task force of an existing project instead of starting a whole new WikiProject. The Hong Kong Language Needs Assessment Project
Description: The Hong Kong Language Needs Assessment Project is a seminal project for English language policy and planning around the world. Although focused on Hong Kong government and society, its theoretical foundation can be applied to most East Asian countries and many countries in other regions where the English language is promoted as a mandatory universal second language in public school systems. The HKLNA-Project is about language quality and language diversity and the preservation of both. The project combines a variety of scientific disciplines including economics, linguistics, political science, statistics, as well as anthropology, sociology, and history. The project took two years to assemble, contains many hundreds of graphs, charts, and tables and a large number of links. If it has an important drawback, then it is the outdated software with which it was produced and a need for software updating and online maintenance.

- "Wikiproject Kurdistan" would be fine however kurds in europe would be beyond the scope of such a wikiproject.
- It would restrict wikiprojects to issues related to that geography rather than kurdish people as a whole. I'd in fact favor such a thing more as I dislike the "wikiproject for an ethnicity" idea somewhat.
- Though Kurdistan is a contraversial term, s preferably something like "Wikproject Kurdish inhabited region" would be better.
- Unless there is a good reason not to follow them, naming conventions need to be followed. Mind that I said "should" and not "must".
- A wikiproject should not be named "plural". So it should be either "Wikiproject Kurd" or "Wikiproject Kurdish people", alternative suggestions are welcome.
- A wikiproject's title preferably should be non-contraversial.
- Why is "Kurdish people" bad as opposed to "Kurds"? Are kurds not people?

- We currently have some options to go with, these are: Kurds, Kurd, Kurdish People, Kurdish inhabited region. The problem with naming it Kurdish People is that we will not only work on articles that are about Kurdish people but Kurdish food, region, religion, culture... which obviously is connected with the Kurdish people. I chose 'Kurds' thinking that the term Kurdistan is a controversial term. for, Kurdish inhabited region, it just is long for a WikiProject title. In conclusion I think it should be either 'Kurds' or 'Kurdish People' or 'Kurdish'. Let's wait a little longer for different opinions. Ozgur Gerilla 15:15, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Guys are we ready? can we start this now; if yes, please let's all decide on the name and open the page. Ozgur Gerilla 02:32, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
- I suggest WP Kurdish people. Kurdistan would lead to many edit-wars, and somewhat rightly so: there are no specific borders. However, I also would like to know how many people will actually be participating in this project. I also suggest that people refrain from using the Kurdistan flag on the project template, just put something another image or so. It is not fair to be putting a flag to places when there actually doesn't exist one officially. If it were named Kurdistan, it would be the perfect invitation to remove the template from articles that fall outside the jurisdiction of the only official entity that uses the name Kurdistan, in Iraq. I am sorry but we cannot correct the geopolitical situation in the world, in Wikipedia we have to ask ourselves if names used coincide with an actual official entity. Kurdish people would be different however. On another note, can I get a roll call of people who are interested one more time? It has been a long time that the proposal was made, so what do the potential contributors think of the naming issue? Baristarim 17:28, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

- For people who think WikiProject Kurdistan will create problems between users; well I think we need to understand that Kurdistan is a region not a country which is refered by nearly all historians. If a very good reason isn't given by users not to go with Kurdistan I think we should use it. I think it will also be a good reason for users who are not familiar with Kurds to understand the current situation and geographical position of Kurdistan. It will simply be attractive and informative. Plus let's not waste much time on naming the project as it's the content that matters more.

- The website Phrasebase provides percentages of similarity between languages (see [7] for an example). There are no citations provided on the website to document where the information is coming from. It seems to me that the conclusions violate WP:RS and WP:V. I would suggest it not be included.Nposs 18:04, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, much of the information is copied and pasted from Ethnologue. See for example Anyin: Ethnologue vs. Phrasebook (region information) - no citation provided.Nposs 18:28, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
I oppose this idea. As Nposs says, Phrasebase appears to be simply duplicating data from the Ethnologue. However, even if based on data from the Ethnologue this is not a good idea, since (1) frequently the Ethnologue doesn't cite its sources either; (2) lexical similarity counts are only available for a limited number of languages/lects; (3) a lexical similarity count is virtually useless without information on how exactly it was arrived at (Which lexical items were compared (see e.g. Swadesh list)? How were they collected? How was the similarity or distance calcuted (nearest neighbour, clustering)? — mark ✎ 19:56, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

I know JJ has been blocked; someone other than me should (please) strike out (rather than delete) his name from the roster. I am not a pastor. - I've joined WikiProjects in the past, but in the end, my time and energies have been diverted away. However, this is a project I could support wholeheartedly. My efforts would mostly be directed toward Cameroon-related articles. —
- Like BrianSmithson, and as someone who has a strong personal interest in several of these countries, I would support this proposal. However, I do think that some thought needs to be given to how this new project will be coordinated with existing initiatives at continental (e.g. Africa regional notice board) and national (e.g. WikiProject Chad) level. -- Kahuzi 09:29, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- I support this effort one hundred percent. As someone that has added considerable content to this area, I am happy to see it finally proposed.--Thomas.macmillan 03:18, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
- While the idea is very attractive, I'm afraid it may end like WikiProject Chad, i.e. instead of a collaborative project mostly a one-man's work. That said, the idea, as I said before is highly tempting, especially with regards to the part concerning peer-reviews and collaborations. As to my efforts, I will deliver them mostly to Chad-related articles, but will always be happy to help with other countries to. Just a note regarding the scope of the project: wouldn't it be better to keep Angola out, as culturally and historically little linked with the other countries, while include Rwanda and Burundi?-- Aldux 21:24, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
- Or maybe those countries could be included in more than one project, considering their "border" status. Personally, I am far from an expert in these matters myself. Badbilltucker 21:30, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll support this. I need a break from Nigeria from time to time. I think it should be a goal of this project to aid in the maintenance of Portal:Democratic Republic of the Congo. The instructions at the top say 5-10 people, and the project page indicates that I'll be the sixth; should we kick it off now? Picaroon 17:47, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
Comments
- The project page is named Central Africa, actually. But right now I am working on consolidating a list of religions and denominations and gathering the data for a new revision to the Project Directory, so it might be the case that actually starting the project might have to wait a day or two. And I do think that the Africa proposal will probably be removed at the same time the other "subdivision" projects are, unless it is the case that one or two "subidisional" projects don't gather enough independent interest to take off on their own immediately. In that case, the Africa project might officially deal with all of Africa but practically deal only with those parts of Africa not already covered by smaller-scope projects. Again, I think that largely depends on how much support the various regional projects show. Badbilltucker 22:38, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
I believe that a regional focused project for this area of Africa might have a better chance of drawing members than a continent-wide project. So, basically, for existing projects like Wikipedia:WikiProject Chad, we would in no way seek to preempt any of their efforts, and only act in relation to them by providing support services, like maybe assessment, peer review, and collaboration, which they might not provide. Also, I personally hope that the project gets enough members to "spin off" other projects for other countries as well. A similar approach would be taken with the African notice board, with the proviso that this project might be seen, as a sense, in being the more "focused" group.

MythBusters has only about 20 articles on Wikipedia. Now if it had more than 100 articles on Wikipedia, I would approve it, but MythBusters is way too small for a WikiProject right now. North American Motorsport
I think there a need for a WikiProject about all motorsports in North America that are not covered under other existing WikiProjects: WP:NASCAR, WP:IROC, WP:American Open Wheel Racing, Sports Car Racing, etc. The WikiProject would be similiar to Wikipedia:WikiProject British Motorsport in scope. The introduction would be "WikiProject North American Motorsport aims to create, expand, update and standardize Wikipedia articles related to Motorsport in the North America." These other WikiProjects would take over the articles as drivers move up in the ranks, and would replace the article's marking template with their own.
I initially thought about proposing a WikiProject would encompass all motorsport articles in the United States. There is a fair bit of border hopping into Canada by NASCAR (especially with the new NASCAR Canadian Tire Series), and I would like to see the Baja 1000 included in the WikiProject.
It would be organized as an sibling WikiProject to WikiProject NASCAR/WikiProject IROC, etc. It would not do oversight of the WikiProjects, as that is covered by WikiProject Motorsport. Applicable articles would include notable racetracks, drivers, halls of fame, sanctioning bodies, etc. A sample of specific articles would include: ARCA, American Speed Association, IMCA, UMP, CORR, SODA (series), USAR Hooters Pro Cup, National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame, Mike Eddy, Manzanita Speedway, Knoxville Raceway, Lake Geneva Raceway, Crandon International Off-Road Raceway, Berlin Raceway, Bonneville Speedway, Knoxville Nationals, Dirt track racing in the United States just to name a few. Other WikiProject could claim any of these articles as they see fit.

Lead Paragraph Cleanups
Description
The problem of lenthy lead paragraphs here on wikipedia is becoming very serious, perhaps 20% of all articles open with very long segemented and complicated lead paragraphs. I propose to manage a group to work on tagging and cleaning up a large number of the articles with lead paragraphs that are either to long or too short in accords to WP:LEAD. Tasks will entail, tagging, editing and bringing discussions to a consensus on the issues relevant to the topic. The appropriate length of a lead depends on subject of the article. This is an important matter since the "lead" immediately grabs the attention of the reader. to meet quality standards.

- I know nothing about medicime, but one thing that I think might work would be to contact WikiProject Medicine and see if they would be interested in creating a work group or task force to deal with this area. By making it a "subproject" of Medicine, it is more likely that the members of the Medicine project will be aware of it, and such a subproject arrangement might get more members of the Medicine WikiProject to join or contribute to articles in this field than a completely separate project would. Revolutions of 1848
- Description
- In 1848, liberal, nationalist, idealistic and republican revolutions swept across Europe. All the revolutions eventually failed, but nevertheless, the years of 1848-49 were a monumental turning point in the history of Europe, and their repercussions are being felt to this very day. I am terribly dismayed that Wikipedia's coverage of these revolutions is so poor and I appeal to all Wikipedians interested in the history of Europe to join in this project. Next year marks the 160th anniversary, and I for one would like to see our set of 1848 articles vastly improved by that time.

Road transport

- Might just want to see if the Highways project might want to expand/rename to include this topic as well. Or make a broader project and then put both concepts as task forces of that project, so you can easily share over-lapping elements such as templates and related discussions. -- Ned Scott 06:04, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

With the proliferation of national WikiProjects, even one for Austria-Hungary, 90 years gone, would there be enough interest to justify such a project as this?
- You might want to check with the proposed Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Eastern Africa group first. Personally, it seems to me that there may be more editors with interests in Europe than Africa, and that might be why the Austria-Hungary project exists. It might be a better idea to create the larger group first, and then, when it is known whether there is enough interest, to create task forces of that larger group. Robotics
- Description
- WikiProject Robotics- This project would incorporate all the robotics articles together and improve/clean them as with all WikiProjects. UAV's, industrial and domestic, as well as military robots would be covered. Developmental aspects would be covered. Also components of robots, (motors, microcontrollers, electronics) would be covered. Finally, locomotion systems, electronic theory, artificial intelligence and generally anything else in the scope of robotics would be covered. The regrettable thing is, I am nowhere near competent enough to do such a project. So if anyone is interested, and knows how, please start it up!

- Comment - Actually, very few people "lead" projects, they simply help organize them. You might be very well qualified to do that. You can certainly find some suggestions of how to do so at the Project Directory. And, on a side note, there is an extant Wikipedia:WikiProject Dead Malls, which covers the rather more moribund malls exclusively right now. Maybe you could contact them and see if, possibly with some help from you, they would be willing to expand their project to cover the living malls, too. Badbilltucker 22:22, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

- At the #Eastern Africa section up there, you listed Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. If that project gets off the ground and this doesn't, then they should stay within it's range. But if the reverse happens, or both get off the ground, Zambia and Zimbabwe should definitely be within the scope of this project, and Malawi probably should. I'm unable to offer my support for this project at this time seeing as Malawi is the only one of these countries that piques my interest - even were it included, I couldn't guarantee my participation. Picaroon 21:33, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- If I can offer my two cents (I once attempted organizing a WikiProject Zambia), I must agree with Picaroon; if this project passes, the three states he mentioned, for historical, geographical and cultural reasons, be placed with Southern Africa, possibly also with Angola (see Southern Africa). If the current range is kept, this project takes the serious risk of becoming a fork of the existing Wikipedia:WikiProject South Africa, as the weight of Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland combined is nut much compared to South Africa in terms of both sources available, demography and wikipedia coverage.--Aldux 22:10, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- So noted. As someone who just recently tried to partially revive the South Africa Project (it has a banner now), I can see the difficulty. However, given the lack of response to date, I'm not sure that we'll have anything to worry about anytime soon. Badbilltucker 22:14, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Synthesizers
Description: This wikiproject aims to document synthesizers and their use in popular music. These instruments have played an increasingly important role in shaping the musical output of artists over the last 50 years. They have also spawned completely new genres of music as musicians work with electronic instruments exclusively. Unlike general classes of instruments, such as guitars, each model of synthesizer is engineered with the ability to create unique sounds and each is therefore a unique instrument in its own right.

- Compare Automobile and Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles to see the worth of a project which draws people in to the breadth of the field. – Kieran T (talk) 17:15, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with the main article about trucks. However, if you compare with the coverage of automobiles, aircrafts and trains, there are surprisingly few articles about various truck models. To be honest I also find most articles on truck manufacturers rather thin (example). Of course this won't be solved by just adding a new project, but a project will help make new articles more conform and thereby of grater value to the readers. It will also be easier for users to add new information or new articles if there are suitable templates, like infoboxes, to pick from. Rotten Stone 17:47, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
- Following the example link I see that Unimog is well overdone compared to the other models...
- I miss some more country-specific details on rules etc. to the truck-article. About models I see that Volvo is even worse, I actually started up one model with a photo only in the hope that sby would feel provoked to write the text to it (since I don't have the faintest idea of model history - I only drive the things). My problem on a truck project would be that
- I have a work without computer
- I have 2 small kids taking a lot of my home time
- I work mostly at the da:Wiki, especially when it comes to technical articles, since my school-english didn't include technical terms.

- If it covered road going trucks, trailers, buses, motorhomes and perhaps implements (ie everything not covered by the existing automobile and motorbike wikiprojects), I think that it would have more chance of gaining the member numbers needed for viability. But I still think that there's a need for a WikiProject for "homeless" articles, articles that do not fall under any presently existing WikiProject. For example, until we got our Textile Arts WikiProject a few days ago, that was the case for hundreds of articles on knitting, weaving, spinning, fashion, etc. It'd be nice to have a temporary home for such articles until their field reaches "critical mass" for forming a WikiProject. Veterinary medicine
There are currently a number of projects dealing with specific species and kinds of animals. Almost by definition, many of these projects treat, at least peripherally, the health matters of these animals. Regretfully, there is no coordination of these efforts, and the number of true experts in the field who are best qualified to address the matters of veterinary medicine are thus often spread about among these groups. This project proposes to provide some degree of coordination of these editors, and more generally, to create, improve, and maintain articles dealing with matters of veterniary medicine.

Comments I believe that a regional focused project for this area of Africa might have a better chance of drawing members than a continent-wide project.

Comments It is I believe understood that this project would focus its efforts primarily on those countries which are not already included within the scope of other WikiProjects.
- I think the project should include Iran as it is located in West Asia. As for Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Cyprus, aren't they considered a part of Europe?Orionist 06:20, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Regarding the status of Georgia, et al., the countries in this group were selected on the basis of the existing UN world regions. They also include Iran in southern Asia. However, this is a proposed project and everything is open to change. There is an extant Wikipedia:WikiProject Iran, which presumably deals with all the Iranian issues, but part of the intention of this proposed project is to provide back-up if any national project goes inactive, so, basically, if you want to include Iran here, we could probably fairly easily do so. Badbilltucker 15:09, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- That is a weird classification by the UN as all geography books and atlases put Iran in West Asia (it also competes in the West Asia soccer championship). However, they have they're own project. What I hope is, maybe including Iran will draw some Iranian users to the project (we may contact their project?). This area needs much work as it seems neglected by most, and because Iran has always been a part of it historically, we might get some good contributions from Iranian users about their neighbors. Just my two cents. Orionist 16:24, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- I see the logic of your position, and acknwoledge that there is absolutely no reason why the members of that project should not be contacted, nor any reason why a message regarding this project could not be included on the Talk: Iran page. Please tell me if you want me to make such a contact, or, if you prefere, feel free to contact them yourself. Thank you for the suggestion. Badbilltucker 22:33, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! I hope we can make this real so soon. This is a region that really needs much work (having a tough time working on it myself!). I've just added my name (how did I forget to do that?). Orionist 20:08, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Wiki Markup Standardization
The idea behind this is to develop standards for wiki markup. Hopefully, in order to offset the MediaWiki markup POV so rampantly prevalent here, we would be able to recruit a large number of users of other wiki software to provide their own input. I'd also be happy to accept ideas for shorter/more creative names for the project :)

WorldCat Identities - external links
- Description
- The recently prototyped WorldCat Identities provides pages - linked to the WorldCat union catalog - for 20 million 'identities', mainly authors and persons who are the subjects of published titles. This project would aim systematically to provide external links from biographical pages in Wikipedia to their WorldCat Identities page.

Tim O'Reilly's reaction to WorldCat Identities was to call for a project like this: “I'd really love to see this tied in programmatically to wikipedia. There ought to be an automatic link to this site for every identity in wikipedia!” WorldCat Identities currently provides thousands of links in the reverse direction, i.e. to en:Wikipedia. Of the over 200,000 biographical articles on Wikipedia, around 20% are reliably automatically matchable to Wikipedia Identities via the Library of Congress Name Authority file (see User:Dsp13). Once WorldCat Identities is stabilized with 'cool' URLs, this project could proceed at full throttle: it would allow easy passage from Wikipedia biographical articles to associated library holdings. Dsp13 15:02, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
- How precisely would they be linked from Wikipedia articles? External links, special metadata templates like WP:PERSON, or what? --Gwern (contribs) 21:36 20 February 2007 (GMT)
- I was envisaging external links, though that's not incompatible with an external link template like these. Dsp13 23:00, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm not sure external links is the best solution. It runs afoul of some peoples sense of SPAM, it's a lot of work to create new entries, and there is no guarantee someone in the future won't just delete it - it won't be very consistent. I think the way Wikipedia handles ISBN's would be a better solution to finding library holdings. So long as an author has an ISBN listed, the user is directed to an internal Wikipedia page that lists 100s of sources for books. For example ISBN 0198114915 takes us to a page with WorldCat listed as the first entry. This seems like a cleaner, more consistent solution already in place. -- Stbalbach 15:12, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, ISBNs are excellent, and very clean. However, two points. First, ISBNs have only been assigned for recently published works. (For historical works, an OCLC number is emerging as a sort of stand-in.) Second, WorldCat Identities gathers together titles by/about a single individual: adding a single external link is certainly no more work than adding several ISBNs (though I see the two as complementary). You're right, though, that external links (especially if not backed by an external link template) run foul of some people's sense of spam. Dsp13 15:25, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- I really don't like them. The pages are nice enough, but they don't really show anything remarkable - certainly they don't seem to be expansive on the subject in the same way that linking to IMDB for films is. We should think very hard before rolling out a comprehensive project to link to a single external site across tens of thousands of pages - like it or not, it constitutes a pretty significant statement on our part as to the importance, usability and significance of their material.
- The information on them is automatically generated, not cleaned up by human oversight, and it shows - the Kipling page tells us he wrote "Adventure fiction" and worked as a "Author, Bibliographic antecedent, Lyricist, Translator, Performer, Illustrator, Correspondent". (I am unaware of any notable levels of translating, performing or illustrating - plus what use is 'bibliographic antecedent' to a nonspecialist? - and he wrote a damn sight more than 'Kim'!) The major biography on him is apparently by "Frederick Winston Furneaux Smith Birkenhead", a name that only an authority catalogue could love. The cataloguing graph can't handle the fairly standard "19--" and has at least two or three completely wrong datapoints manual oversight would have caught, and the list of works is confusingly arranged and bizzarely constituted. (I am really not convinced the two named collections of poetry represent identifiably distinct groups of work... one being dated 1956 and "published between 1890 and 2006" seems dubious)
- Really, there doesn't seem to be any major content on these external pages that we couldn't do better just writing into the article, and it doesn't serve as a gateway to anything much more than the holdings of a single self-selecting consortium of libraries (which is a lot less comprehensive than it can seem at first glance).
- There is a use for these - their aggregate figures on the number of editions of different works is promising, and would be good to cite in passing for a lot of works - but I think we'd be doing our readers and editors a disservice to imagine that these are universally helpful external links. Shimgray | talk | 22:31, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- To call WorldCat nothing 'much more than the holdings of a single self-selected consortium of libraries (which is a lot less comprehensive than it can seem at first glance)' seems entirely misleading to me: it's by far the biggest union catalog ever attempted, includes some major academic libraries and has over 1.1 billion holdings: just watch it grow. As far as your careful criticisms of a WorldCat Identities page goes, though, perhaps I was premature to make this project proposal while WorldCat Identities is such a recent beta project: several of these issues seem teething problems which I hope will get ironed out. What do others think? Dsp13 15:57, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

- Oh, it's not that, you are free to start such efforts if you wish, but sometimes the editors you are trying to reach aren't watching pages like this and don't know about your proposal. You might want to mention the idea on related article talk pages. Also, you might want to try this idea via task force, something we're trying to promote more often as an alternative to starting WikiProjects from the ground up. Basically you get all the benefits of a focused editing group, but with less hassle and not having to worry about starting from scratch. -- Ned Scott 08:01, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

This would be better off integrated into Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics (as a task force or otherwise), I think. Kirill Lokshin 23:35, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
Not sure what's intended to be included in this WikiProject's scope. The examples in the description above — "polygons, polyhedrons, geometric shapes, angles" — are all covered in high-school Euclidean geometry. There's a lot more to geometry than that: see the article Geometry for a taste, or the list of geometry topics for a partial list. So I'm not sure whether the description above is meant to imply that these topics are not in the scope of this WikiProject, or if they were merely chosen as examples of topics that will also include Bruhat-Tits buildings, the Hodge conjecture, and so forth. (I'm just seeking clarification, not meaning offense.) —msh210℠ 04:00, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Given Names
- Description
When researching some information on particular given names, I realized many very common names do not have articles devoted to them. Many articles with common names are either biographies or redirects to biographies (e.g. Tristan, Aaron) and there may be little or no encyclopedic information about the names (their meanings, their popularity, their translations). A good example of a name which I've come across (only because it happens to be my name) is the page for Michael. It's very informative and has a link to the angel.
Never started a WikiProject before, and I'm relatively new to Wikipedia (200-250 edits), but I'm of course willing to try. I'd like it, though, if some more experienced users could take the project on with me. Basically, given names interest me, but I have no personal qualifications. Ideally this project could take advantage of a user who has studied given names and a user who has a lot of experience in Wikipedia. — atchius (msg) 05:52, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
