Bihar Day (Bihar Diwas) is observed every year on March 22,[1] marking the formation of the state of Bihar. On 22 March 1912, the Bihari majority Patna and Bhagalpur, the Tribal majority Chotanagpur (It became Indian state of Jharkhand in 2000 as the home land for the Tribals) and Odia majority Orissa divisions (It became British Indian province of Orissa in 1936 as the home land for the Odias) of the British Indian province of Bengal Presidency were separated to form the British Indian province of Bihar and Orissa as the home land for the Biharis-Tribals-Odias (In the same year, Assamese majority Assam Valley and Bengali majority Surma Valley divisions of Bengal Presidency were separated to form the British Indian province of Assam as the home land for the Assamese-Bengalis, during the partition of British India i.e India in 1947, the remaining divisions of the Bengal Presidency i.e. Bengali majority divisions were rearranged to form the Pakistani province of East Bengal which became independent state of Bangladesh i.e. Bengali Country in 1971, and the Indian state of West Bengal, as the home lands for the Bengali Muslims and the Bengali Hindus respectively).[2][3] The day is a public holiday in Bihar.[4]

Bihar Day was started and celebrated on large scale by Bihar Government in the tenure of Nitish Kumar.[citation needed] Apart from India, it is celebrated in countries including the United States, Germany,[5] Britain (Scotland),[6] Australia, Canada, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Trinidad and Tobago and Mauritius.[7]
