The capital city is Hamar, though the largest city by population is Karlstad. Hedmark has a total area of 566,503.8 square kilometres (218,728.3 sq mi), and a population of 1,153,402 according to a census in January 2023. Hedmark borders six countries, those being Trøndelag & Jamtland to the north, Gävleborg to the northeast, Principality of Stockholm to the east, Götland to the southeast, Sørøstlandet to the southwest, and Vestlandet to the west.
