Easy corrections

WP:COSMETICEDIT

Though I know you're not a bot, it would be nice if you'd take a look at WP:COSMETICBOT: Cosmetic changes to the wikitext are sometimes the most controversial, either in themselves or because they clutter page histories, watchlists, and/or the recent changes feed with edits that are not worth the time spent reviewing them. Such changes should not usually be done on their own, but may be allowed in an edit that also includes a substantive change.

I'm not sure which edits of mine you're referring to, but it could be these ones in articles you have recently worked on: here and here. As my edit summaries explain, I am fixing lint errors, in these cases, replacing obsolete <center>...</center> tags. These are tags that are no longer valid in HTML5 and need to be replaced. Have a look at Wikipedia:Linter and Help:Extension:Linter. The goal of fixing lint errors is not to make a visible change to the article. I used it several times to retrieve articles from ProQuest, OUP and Taylor&Francis. Not sure why today none of them are working... By the way I see that OUP or other Oxford sources have been deprecated. Is it just me or is it a universal thing? Ippantekina (talk) 10:12, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

About two years ago I read I'm Thinking of Ending Things and thoroughly enjoyed it, then I read Foe a little while later and loved it too. I was excited to learn just now that he has a third book out (I didn't notice when it was released last year) and I can't wait to get into it. @DanCherek: Thank you for the compliment. I also enjoyed I'm Thinking ... and Foe, but We Spread not quite as much. All three of Reid's novels have endings that are open to interpretation, which I feel work well in the first two, but not quite so well in the third. But that's just my opinion. Thank you for fixing my errors on the Robeson template. However, I wondered why you restored a red link that I had removed (along with all the other red links that I changed to black non-links), at the Paul Robeson Speaks entry. I hope you are not planning to put in more red links. I discussed my intention to remove the red links at Template talk:Paul Robeson over a week ago, and no one responded to it. "You can always propose the change on a template's talk page, and make the change if there are no objections after a few days. Use your discretion in determining how potentially controversial your change might be" (from Wikipedia:Template editor).

Wikipedia has this mandate: "Because they are useless in navigation aids, do not create red links in: Templates such as Main, Details, Further, and Seealso, which are intended to direct readers to existing articles" (from Wikipedia:Red link). Paul Graetz profile

Hi, today you reverted my changes on my grandfather profile, Paul Graetz, do you mind if I undo your deletes? I frankly do not know how to prove his date of birth and that the picture I added is actually authentic. Pictures are generally not good sources, but in this case, his grave stone does seem to confirm that he was born 3 April 1899. The article will need additional sources for verification, and to that end, I've put a {{More citations needed}} tag on the article. @WikiUser70176: Sorry, I must have signed off moments before you posted your message. There are several ways to control the width of a multiple image. You can use "width" to specify the width of all the images, or "width1", "width2", etc to specify the width of each image separately, or "total_width" to specify to width of the combined images. Your edit is promotional, which is not permitted on Wikipedia, and your user name suggests a conflict of interest. Have a look at WP:LINKSPAM and WP:Conflict of interest. Recent changes

  • The RealMe extension allows you to mark URLs on your user page as verified for Mastodon and similar software.
  • Citation and footnote editing can now be started from the reference list when using the visual editor. This feature request was voted #2 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [3]
  • Previously, clicking on someone else's link to Recent Changes with filters applied within the URL could unintentionally change your preference for "Group results by page". This has now been fixed. [4]

Problems

  • For a few days last week, some tools and bots returned outdated information due to database replication problems, and may have been down entirely while it was being fixed. These issues have now been fixed. [5]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 June. It will be on all wikis from 8 June (calendar).

Recent changes

  • The content attribution tools Who Wrote That?, XTools Authorship, and XTools Blame now support the Dutch, German, Hungarian, Indonesian, Japanese, Polish and Portuguese Wikipedias. This was the #7 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [7]
  • The Search Preview panel has been deployed on four Wikipedias (Catalan, Dutch, Hungarian and Norwegian). The panel will show an image related to the article (if existing), the top sections of the article, related images (coming from MediaSearch on Commons), and eventually the sister projects associated with the article.   • The RealMe extension now allows administrators to verify URLs for any page, for Mastodon and similar software. [9]
  • The default project license has been officially upgraded to CC BY-SA 4.0. The software interface messages have been updated. Communities should feel free to start updating any mentions of the old CC BY-SA 3.0 licensing within policies and related documentation pages. [10]

Problems

  • For three days last month, some Wikipedia pages edited with VisualEditor or DiscussionTools had an unintended __TOC__ (or its localized form) added during an edit. There is a listing of affected pages sorted by wiki, that may still need to be fixed. [11]
  • Currently, the "Sort this page by default as" feature in VisualEditor is broken. Existing {{DEFAULTSORT:...}} keywords incorrectly appear as missing templates in VisualEditor. Developers are exploring how to fix this. In the meantime, those wishing to edit the default sortkey of a page are advised to switch to source editing. [12]
  • Last week, an update to the delete form may have broken some gadgets or user scripts. If you need to manipulate (empty) the reason field, replace #wpReason with #wpReason > input. See an example fix. [13]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 June. It will be on all wikis from 15 June (calendar).
  • VisualEditor will be switched to a new backend on English Wikipedia on Monday, and all other large wikis on Thursday. The change should have no noticeable effect on users, but if you experience any slow loading or other strangeness when using VisualEditor, please report it on the phabricator ticket linked here.
