"Gento" (stylized in all uppercase) is a song recorded by Filipino boy band SB19. Produced by its songwriter Pablo, with Joshua Daniel Nase and Simon Servida, the song was released by Sony Music Philippines on May 19, 2023, as the lead single from their second extended play (EP), Pagtatag! (2023). A pophip hop track, its lyrics contain a symbolic comparison of hardships and continued effort in obtaining success with mining gold, hinting over the boy band's music career.

"Gento" received positive reviews from music critics, praising its catchy lyricism, vocals, and versatility. SB19's first sales hit, the song charted on Billboard's US World Digital Song Sales and Philippines Songs charts, peaking at number eight and 11, respectively. An accompanying grungy-themed music video was directed by Kerbs Balagtas, depicting the members mining for gold. The boy band followed the song's release with a live performance on All-Out Sundays, and the song was featured on the set list of their Pagtatag! World Tour (2023).

Background and release

In late-2022, SB19 embarked on their first concert tour with WYAT (Where You At) Tour.[1] During the course of their touring, the boy band revealed that a new project is in the works.[2] Pablo revealed in a press conference for their tour's homecoming concert that the boy band would release a new body of work soon, which will revolve around the word "pagtatag" (lit.'establishment').[3] Other members added that their upcoming release would explore different music genres and life experiences.[3]

On April 29, 2023, SB19 released trailer revealing the title of their second extended play (EP), Pagtatag!, and its release date on June 9.[4][5] It marks the boy band's new material since the release of their first EP, Pagsibol, in 2021.[6] The boy band announced that the EP would be preceded by a single to be released on May 19, although they didn't reveal the title immediately.[4][5] The boy band announced the title of the EP's lead single as "Gento" on May 10, and was made available for pre-save on streaming platforms.[7] Ultimately, "Gento" was released on May 19, 2023, through Sony Music Philippines.[8]

Composition and lyrics

Gold goes through a tough process to become what it is. Just like us, we also went through a lot. We worked hard and poured our blood, sweat, and tears into where we are now.

— Ken on "Gento", Rappler[9]

"Gento" is three minutes and 52 seconds long.[11] Pablo wrote the song and produced it alongside his brother Joshua Daniel Nase and Simon Servida,[12] the latter being whom the boy band had worked with for their first EP, Pagsibol (2021).[13] Heo Chan-goo of Knob Sound Korea handled the mixing and mastering.[12]

Musically, "Gento" is a bold mix of pop and hip hop, accompanied by an EDM break;[10] others describe the song as an EDM pop track.[8][9] The song featured clapping sounds and strong bass beats in its production.[14] The lyrics take inspiration from transformational change and allude to SB19's continued growth and effort since their debut.[8][10] It provides a message about rise and resilience through incremental tasks in achieving further success and triumph, comparing it when mining and refining gold,[10][9] pointing out that success is as rigorous as excavating them: "Di ka basta-basta makakakita ng gento." (lit.'You just won't simply find something like this.')[14] The lyrics incorporate a word play of similar words "ginto" (lit.'gold') and "ganito" (lit.'like this'),[15] which was used interchangeably throughout the song, along with other rhyming words.[10]

Reception

Upon the song's release, "Gento" is described as catchy, particularly its word play;[15][16] Rafael Bautista of Nylon Manila added that despite the song's playfulness, it did not affect the song's message, and the weaving of several words in its lyrics was done "effortlessly".[10] Multiple sources, comprising the Daily Tribune, BusinessMirror, and GMA Network, noted that the song highlights the boy band's strength and versatility and that they continued to "test the limits with their unconventional sound and unbounded talent".[17][18][19] Writing for Mega magazine, Chlarine Gianan praised the boy band's vocals and rap, stating they have put it on the "next level", and the song's lyricism manifests seamless transitions between English and Tagalog, further holding up its catchiness and appeal.[14]

Commercially, SB19 made their debut on two of Billboard's music charts with "Gento" and became their first song to be a sales hit.[20] Following the release of Pagtatag!, "Gento" debuted at number eight on the US World Digital Song Sales chart,[20] and at number 17 on the Philippines Songs chart,[21] with SB19 became the first Filipino group to earn a spot on the former.[22] Ultimately, the song peaked at number 11 on the Philippines Songs chart.[23]

Promotion

The music video for "Gento" was directed by Kerbs Balagtas and was released the same day as the song on YouTube.[10][24] The video is grungy-themed,[16] which depicts SB19 mining for gold, as well as delivering a choreography in a quarry.[15] It garnered over three million views about two weeks after its release.[25]

To promote "Gento", SB19 performed the song on All-Out Sundays on May 21, 2023.[26] They included the song on the set list of their second concert tour, Pagtatag! World Tour (2023).[27]

Controversy

In a live episode of It's Showtime, dated June 10, 2023, the crew refused to play the song following a request during the interview portion of one of the show's segments, which startled hosts Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis.[28] Ganda jokingly expressed how playing "Gento" on the show will now require a fee, which Curtis responded with, "Really? Isn't playing the song on the show a good promo[tion] for the music industry? It's a pity."[28]

Following the incident, SB19 received foul comments regarding the controversy,[28] calling the boy band "greedy".[29] Twitter users began raising concern, summoning discussions regarding music royalties and the hosts' remarks.[28] Furthermore, the phrase "respect local artists" trended on Twitter, with singer Sam Concepcion and record producer Thyro Alfaro participated in the discussion, expressing support for SB19.[28]
