Amritpal Singh Manhunt | |
---|---|
Objective | To locate and apprehend Amritpal Singh, a Sikh activist accused of multiple crimes |
Date | 18 March 2023 – 23 April 2023 |
Amritpal Singh manhunt was a search operation conducted by the Indian authorities for Amritpal Singh, a pro-Khalistan Sikh activist who has been accused of multiple crimes, including attempted murder and hate speech.[1]
Following a recent crackdown by Punjab Police, Singh went into hiding and was reportedly seen in several different cities. Despite efforts by authorities, Singh managed to avoid capture by changing vehicles and disguising himself as a Hindu preacher.[2][3]
Timeline
On 18 March 2023, Indian authorities launched a manhunt for Amritpal Singh after he was accused by police of attempted murder, obstruction of law enforcement and creating "disharmony" in society.[4][5] On 20 March 2023, the Punjab government enforced the stringent National Security Act against Singh and five of his close aides.[6][7][8]
During the manhunt, Indian authorities deployed thousands of paramilitary police and restricted mobile Internet and mobile messaging services for nearly 30 million people across the Punjab state.[9] Indian authorities also arrested more than 200 people while conducting a massive manhunt.[10][11][12]
In Amritsar, the second-largest city in Punjab, the police issued a “hue and cry notice” calling on the public to offer information on the whereabouts of Singh.[12]
In a video released on 29 March 2023, Singh appealed to the Sikh community and Akal Takht for support, without disclosing his location or explaining why he is evading arrest. He criticised the government for detaining Sikh youth and called for a "Sarbat Khalsa" on Baisakhi. The situation gained media attention, with some questioning how Singh had managed to evade authorities.[13]
Sikh activists and organisations expressed concern for Singh's safety and called for fair treatment under the law. Meanwhile, Singh remained at large, and the search for him continued.[14][15][16]
On 23 April 2023, after more than a month, Singh was arrested from Rode village in Moga district, Punjab. Later, he was taken to the high-security Dibrugarh jail in Assam state.[17]
Reaction
In March 2023, Sikhs protested across the United States,[18] the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Punjab, India, against the manhunt of Singh and the crackdown on his organisation Waris Punjab De, carried out by the Indian authorities.[19][20]
