Maaveeran (transl. The Great Warrior) is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language political fantasy action film written and directed by Madonne Ashwin, of Mandela (2021) fame, and produced by Arun Viswa. The film stars an ensemble cast featuring Sivakarthikeyan and Aditi Shankar in the lead roles, while Mysskin, Yogi Babu, Sunil, Saritha and Monisha Blessy in supporting roles.[4][5]

Maaveeran was scheduled to release on 11 August 2023, but was preponed to 14 July 2023 in order to avoid clash between Jailer and received positive reviews from critics.[6]

Plot

The film takes a long time to set up things, and it gets excruciating to see Sathya (Sivakarthikeyan), a coward, getting beaten up and shamed repeatedly. A comic artiste, Sathya sells himself short by letting someone use his sketches for a Tamil paper. He doesn’t have it in him to demand money or an opportunity from the one exploiting him. Nila (Aditi Shankar), the sub-editor of the paper, ends up standing up for Sathya and gets him a job. Meanwhile, Sathya and others living in a slum are made to relocate to a multi-storey apartment as part of the government scheme. Things get worse when things in the apartment start falling apart, literally. The subpar construction makes the apartment unlivable but people are left with no option. While Sathya’s mother keeps revolting against the contractor, the son keeps telling her to ‘adjust’. He instead uses all his troubles to create content for his comic Maaveeran, a superhero who solves all the problems of the oppressed. But when he realizes even his mom considers him unfit to live a respectful life, Sathya tries to take his life. Though he fails in doing this as well, he sustains an injury to his head, and he starts hearing a voice (Vijay Sethupathi). What happens next forms part of the crux of the story.

Development

In December 2021, reports said that Sivakarthikeyan signed a new film with Madonne Ashwin, who directed Mandela, under Vels Films International, and the film will start shooting in July 2022.[7] In June 2022, Mysskin was reported to play the antagonist.[8] An official announcement of the film was made by the team in July with a teaser and a first look poster. The announcement stated that the title would be Maaveeran, the film is directed by Madonne Ashwin, produced by Arun Viswa under Shanthi Talkies, Bharath Shankar will compose the music and Vidhu Ayyanna will handle the cinematography.[9] In August, it was confirmed that Aditi Shankar would be playing the lead actress role.[10]

Filming

The principal photography started with a muhurat puja on 3 August 2022.[11] The first schedule happened in Chennai for a month and had completed all the major portions.[12] In November, 40% of the shooting was done.[13] In March 2023, the final schedule started in Pondicherry.[14] In the same month, Sivakarthikeyan had finished shooting his portions.[15] The shooting wrapped up after shooting some patch works in early-June.[16]

Post-production

Sivakarthikeyan started dubbing his portions in late-May 2023 and finished in early-June.[17][18] Aditi had started dubbing for her portions in early-June.[19] On 2 July, a pre-release event happened in Chennai and a trailer for the film released.[20][21]

Soundtrack

The soundtrack and background score were composed by Bharath Sankar in his first collaboration with Sivakarthikeyan and second with Madonne after Mandela. The audio rights were bagged by Saregama.[22] The first single "Scene Ah Scene Ah" released on Sivakarthikeyan's birthday (17 February 2023),[23] the second single "Vannarapettayila" on 14 June,[24] and the third single "Vaa Veera" on 7 July.[25]

Release

Maaveeran had a theatrical release in 14 July 2023.[26] It was initially scheduled for theatrical release on 11 August 2023. However, to avoid a box office clash with Jailer, the makers preponed it to 14 July.[27] The distribution rights for Tamil Nadu are held by Red Giant Movies and Asian Cinemas for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states.[28][29]

Home media

The digital streaming rights of the film were acquired by Amazon Prime Video for 33 crore, while the satellite rights were sold to Sun TV Network.[30]

Reception

M Suganth of The Times of India gave the film 3 out of 5 and wrote "Sivakarthikeyan shines in an engaging but overlong fantasy entertainer."[31] Janaki K of India Today gave the film 3.5 out of 5 and wrote "'Maaveeran' is yet another solid entertainer that makes you enjoy and retrospect. It brings forth prevailing issues, such as corruption, poverty and petty politics. But, it is also a character study of how people will have to revolt for their basic rights."[32]
