It premiered on YouTube on December 9, 2020, was written by series creators Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano and Brandon Rogers, and directed by Medrano and Rick Zieff.

Receiving a universally positive critical reception, "Loo Loo Land" was also nominated for the 2020 Ursa Major Award for Best Dramatic Series.[5][6]

Plot

In the opening scene, a 5-year-old Octavia cries for her parents. When her father Stolas gets to her room to see what is wrong, she tells him about her nightmare, in which she endlessly searched their home and couldn't find him anywhere. Stolas comforts her by saying how he will always be there for her, and uses his grimoire to open a portal to another planet while he sings her a lullaby to her her fall asleep peacefully.

In the present, a now 17-year-old Octavia is awoken by her parents fighting, who are in the midst of a divorce after her mother Stella discovered Stolas had slept with an imp (Blitzo).[a] Getting out of bed, she puts on headphones and picks a song from her hellphone as she walks through their family's estate, before Stella storms out, calling Stolas an "embarrassment". Noticing Octavia's presence, Stolas asks her how she slept, what song she is listening to, receiving a sarcastic response from Octavia, who then asks if her parents are done "screaming" for the day. Hearing his wife break something in another room, Stolas then starts talking about taking Octavia to the Loo Loo Land theme park as they did when she was younger, noting that she was always so "happy" there. Deciding to acquire security to accompany them, he calls Blitzo, greeting him over the phone as "…my big dicked Blitzy", and causing both Blitzo and Octavia to spit out their coffee and shout "what the fuck". Chiding both of them about their language, Stolas asks that Blitzo and his team accompany him to Loo Loo Land, which Blitzo initially refuses before Stolas offers to pay them with money.

Hanging up the phone, Blitzo tells Millie and Moxxie that they are going to Loo Loo Land, before the scene cuts to the theme park as Moxxie opens the back door of the I.M.P. for Stolas and Octavia to get out of. Octavia tries to talk to her father, he seems to pay more attention to what Blitzo is saying to him, while Millie expresses her excitement to be back in the park, her first visit there since she was a child, happily reminiscing about how her parents would bring her and her siblings to the park when they had the money to, while Moxxie remarks on how he finds theme parks disturbing and "pricey", before Blitzo orders them to "have fun" and Millie brings Moxxie to do her favorite ride: a roller coaster named "The Lawsuit", much to his dismay, before the two encounter a rigged shooting gallery carnival game. While Blitzo conspicuously follows Stolas and Octavia through the park, Stolas begins flirting with Blitzo, and Octavia tells them to get a room. Stolas then notices a circus show that he thought Octavia enjoyed as a child, which actually frightened her to tears, and where Blitzo used to work. Both Blitzo and Octavia comment that they hate the show's star clown, Fizzarolli, before Stolas politely interrupts to ask Blitzo to do his job, as a group of imps try to kidnap him. Blitzo shoots one of them and the rest run off, and Stolas takes the duo to see the circus. Taking a seat, Octavia rips the bag off Stolas' head from the failed kidnapping attempt before Robo Fizz, the show's robotic clown (an A.I.-run duplicate of Fizzarolli), takes centre-stage. Robo Fizz delivers a brief speech about how Loo Loo Land is legally distinct from Lu Lu World, before breaking into song with a robotic band about the park, which Stolas enthusiastically applauds on its conclusion, much to Octavia's embarrassment, while Blitzo shoots another imp before it can attack Stolas. Stolas compliments Blitzo's aim, causing Octavia to storm out of the tent, and Stolas to follow her. Having heard Blitzo's name, Robo Fizz (who has Fizzarolli's memories) notices him Blitzo the upper stands, and the two taunt each other incessantly before beginning to fight one another, ultimately setting the tent on fire, before their fight spreads across the theme park.

Meanwhile, Stolas looks for Octavia after she enters the Carnival Fun House, further followed by another group of imps trying to kill him, whom Moxxie and Millie shoot. Continuing through the Fun House, Stolas finds Octavia crying while sitting in the ride. Dropping the Loo Loo Land hat he was wearing, Stolas sits down next to her, finally realizing that she's not having fun, and apologizing for taking her, saying that he thought she loved it. She tells him she did when she was a child and didn't have parents who hated each other, and a father who spent all his time flirting with "a weird red dickhead" the entire time instead of focusing on her. After Stolas tells her he's sorry for everything, Octavia says that she wants to go home, but that "home doesn't feel like home anymore", and that he ruined it. Stolas tries to explain why he cheated on his wife, but struggles to find the words; when Octavia asks if he's going to run off with Blitzo, and leave her behind as in her childhood nightmare, Stolas reassures her that he'd never do that. As the two go to leave, looking on the burning theme park, Stolas tells her she was right, that she's too old for it, before turning an attacking to stone with a glare (displaying that he did not need Blitzo's presence for any purpose other than socialites). Walking past Blitzo's ongoing fight with Robo Fizz and his other robots to the parking lot, Stolas asks Octavia what she wants to do now, and Octavia asks to visit Stylish Occult, a store that sells "weird taxidermy", which while confusing Stolas, he agrees to anyway. Octavia tells him that he's "not so bad at times" as the park explodes behind them, propelling Blitzo, Millie and Moxxie through the air where they land near the pair. As Millie is dragged back to the battle, Moxxie sarcastically compliments Blitzo on "ruining another good thing", to which Blitzo retorts that it was "worth it" and that Robo Fizz "had it coming" before passing out.

Reception

Critical reception

Amari Allah of Wherever I Look lauded the episode's exploration of the "softer side to [the] usually explicit" Stolas through his relationship with his daughter Octavia, turning a character that "seemed like he'd be a permanent running gag" into an "eye-opening" figure whose presence "isn't solely about shock value" and "in many ways, enhanc[ing] Helluva Boss[…] recogniz[ing] that while this is a cartoon [that] depth can be served here", in addition to acclaiming the "shocker, but in a pleasant way" of the episode's multiple songs, of which "each one leaves an imprint on you", in particular "Stolas' song to a young Octavia [in the opening scene,] which sets up the first surprise of the episode."[11]

Hope Mullinax of The Geeky Waffle marked "Loo Loo Land" as a turning-point where one "really start[s] seeing how fleshed out these people are", in particular complimenting the episode's expansion of the "nuances" with Blitzo's and Stolas' relationship, with "the creators succeed[ing] in building their feelings, the exploration of their turbulent rapport, and teasing if they will stay together in the long run".[12]

Comic Book Resources ranked the opening scene of "Loo Loo Land" as 1st on their list of the "Greatest Musical Performances In Cartoons", lauding the "the stunning visuals of the cosmos [accompanying the] incredible performance" of Bryce Pinkham as Stolas, using his "soothing vocals" to sing a lullaby to his daughter Octavia, exploring the "softer side" of Helluva Boss.[13] Brendan Kachel of Flayrah similarly stated that "[I]t can't be stated enough how important the opening scene and number [is] to this series [in displaying that] this show had more to offer than just abrasive humor", describing the relationship between Stolas and Octavia as "the highlight of the episode", while criticising the "background event" nature of the episode's b-plot — Blitzø's feud with a robotic duplicate of Fizzaroli — as "let[ting] the episode down a bit with its conclusion".[14] On visually referring to the opening scene of "Loo Loo Land", Zoe Dumas of MovieWeb complimented how the "horror comedy" premise of the overall series "doesn't preclude the writers from infusing characters and situations with immense emotional depth[…] allow[ing] its characters to experience their emotions in the show's quieter moments [as they] deal with topics including divorce, abandonment, and feeling unworthy of love."[3]
