In the fictional universes of the Sonic the Hedgehog series of video games, cartoons and comic books, there are a significant number of villains present. Aside from some of the more prominent ones, there are several who have had only minor roles in the storyline.

Battle Kukku Army

The Battle Kukku Army are an army of birds that invade Cocoa Island (Tails Island in the English language versions) in Tails Adventure. They invade the island to snag the Chaos Emeralds which are hidden on the island. Tails battles the army and after he defeats their leader, the birds surrender. Another name for the Battle Kukku Army is the Battle Bird Armada[citation needed], and they consist of uniformed birds, somewhat intelligent robot drones and advanced machinery. The Battle Kukku Army lives on a huge flying fortress that posed as an island throughout most of Tails Adventure.

Notable members of the Battle Kukku Army include:

Bearenger

Bearenger is a black male bear who rides a small flying rocket with a menacing shark face similar to the Flying Tigers fighter planes from World War II. He serves as one of Wendy Witchcraft's lackeys in Tails' Skypatrol, where he is the boss of Ruin Wood, the third level. Bearenger fights by firing energy projectiles in sets of three from his rocket.

Carrotia

Carrotia is an orange female rabbit who flies in a flying carrot. She wears a bow and is one of the henchmen of Wendy Witchcraft, serving as an antagonist in Tails' Skypatrol. She is the boss Metal Island, the fourth level, where she fights by firing small homing carrot-shaped missiles and throwing kisses.

Egg Golem

The Egg Golem is a boss character appearing in Sonic Adventure 2. After Knuckles the Echidna defeats King Boom Boo, Eggman appears and summons a giant animated stone statue called the Egg Golem to battle Sonic the Hedgehog. To defeat the Egg Golem, Sonic must run to his back, jump across the platforms that stick out, and attack Golem's control mechanism atop its head.

In the Dark Story, Sonic immediately jumps up and kicks the control mechanism, causing the Egg Golem go haywire. Eggman makes a remark (what a piece of junk) and so it attacks him. In order to defeat it, Eggman has to use his Volkan Cannon to destroy its internal power generators. Once all three of them are destroyed, the Egg Golem becomes disabled and sinks into the quicksand.

According to an eyecatcher information card from Sonic X, the Egg Golem is 57 meters tall and weighs 250 tons.[1] The Egg Golem fights by smashing its hands and head against the circular platform that Sonic or Eggman is standing on. It can also create an electrical field around itself to repel attacks, or spin its arms around itself in order to sweep enemies from the platform.

The Egg Golem also appeared in the Sonic X adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2. It was remotely controlled by Bokkun who used it to fight Sonic and Knuckles. The two heroes had a hard time with the golem, but eventually Cream the Rabbit stole the remote control from Bokkun, and made the Egg Golem chase him into the desert. It later appeared standing in the desert during Super Sonic and Super Shadow's fight against the Finalhazard, with Bokkun standing on its head.

A similar character was also used in the game Sonic & Knuckles as the first act boss in the Sandopolis Zone. Like the Egg Golem it was an animated statue, vulnerable only on its head, and although it was not named, it may have been a partial inspiration for the later character.

Eggman Nega

Eggman Nega is one of the main villains in Sonic Rush. He is introduced as Doctor Eggman's counterpart from another dimension , and the primary nemesis of Blaze the Cat, another character from that dimension. He is more cruel and calculating than the Robotnik from Sonic's world, and has sent Blaze's world into ruin, which is why he sets out for the Sol Emeralds. He is eerily polite for such a cold and calculating person. His downside, however, is that he can sometimes lose track of important details while making unnecessary speeches. His design appears reminiscent to the older Eggman from the Genesis Sonic games, albeit with the colors reversed.

While Eggman himself is first thought to be the primary antagonist in Sonic Rivals, the player soon finds out that Eggman Nega has captured Robotnik and is disguising himself as him. Sonic Rivals also reveals that Eggman Nega is from 200 years in the future (which fits in with Sonic the Hedgehog, which reveals that Blaze is from the future as well), which means the "alternate dimension" both Blaze and Eggman Nega are from holds a futuristic time line. Using a special camera, he turns several objects and characters into cards, with the objective of turning the world into a card that he will be able to control. During the somewhat ambiguous ending of the game, Nega is captured inside a card of his own by Silver, yet it was never revealed how he returned to the past.

Eggrobo

Eggrobo is an egg-shaped humanoid robot resembling Dr. Eggman. They first appeared as enemies in the game Sonic & Knuckles. In Sonic's storyline in that game, they only appeared as standard badnik enemies in the Sky Sanctuary Zone, after being seen launched from the Death Egg.

They are rather more prominent in Knuckles' storyline, however, as one Eggrobo in particular replaces Eggman as the end-of-zone boss in every level up until the Hidden Palace Zone, with the exception of Flying Battery Zone, which is Eggman due to Eggrobo not having sprites to mirror Eggman's angle at the time. This Eggrobo also appears in cutscenes in the game. At the beginning of the game, while Knuckles is relaxing along with some of his animal friends, the Eggrobo drops a bomb in their midst that scares his friends away. This Eggrobo is destroyed by Mecha Sonic in the Sky Sanctuary Zone (the final level in Knuckles' storyline). The Eggrobo restrains Knuckles, allowing Mecha Sonic to charge at him, but Knuckles breaks free and Mecha Sonic destroys the Eggrobo instead.

An Eggrobo later appears in Sonic R as an unlockable character. It has abilities similar to Dr. Eggman's, though Eggrobo is slow for an unlockable character. It is unlocked by getting all the golden coins in the "Regal Ruins" level. An Eggrobo appears in Sonic Adventure 2 as a kart racing VMU Download with his own stage,[2] and again in the remake Sonic Adventure 2: Battle as Rouge the Bat's unlockable sub kart, obtained by getting all the emblems of Rouge's missions.

The Sonic the Hedgehog comic book featured Eggrobos being controlled by Snively Kintobor, among other appearances as basic soldiers. They are quickly defeated by Sonic and a monkey warrior named Monkey Khan. Eggrobo's latest appearance was a cameo appearance on the cover of issue #11 of the Sonic X comic, collapsed underneath a pile of Sonic 1-era Badniks.

The Egg Pawn army introduced in Sonic Heroes bears more than a passing resemblance to the traditional Eggrobos.

Erazor Djinn

Erazor Djinn

Erazor Djinn is a genie who serves as the primary antagonist in Sonic and the Secret Rings. In the game, he attempts to absorb the pages of the book 1001 Nights so he can control the entire world of Arabian Nights, as well as make his way into Sonic's world. His name is a pun on the words "Eraser" and "Razor" because he is "erasing" the pages of the book and he uses a razor-like weapon. He is voiced by Masashi Ebara in Japanese and Peter Cormican in English.

When he first encounters Sonic and Shahra in the beginning of the game, he shoots a blast out of his finger towards Shahra, but Sonic takes the hit, getting shot in the chest. Erazor then warns Sonic that he has a time limit of when he will be "extinguished" like the flame, and that if he wanted the curse lifted from him, he must obtain the seven World Rings, the rings that contain the basic essences that power Arabian Nights, and bring them to Erazor. Later in the story, upon collecting the Purple World Ring at Night Palace, Sonic asks how Shahra came to know so much about Erazor. Shahra reveals that Erazor is the Genie of the Lamp from the tale of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp. Originally, he was punished for his misdeeds, and was to remain in his lamp until he had granted the wishes of one thousand people. When he had fulfilled his sentence and was finally freed, he had a renewed hatred of humanity, and began to take over the Arabian Nights, twisting the words that supported the stories into spirits that followed his command.

Sonic eventually fights Erazor at his floating Night Palace and defeats him. However, he disappears behind the door that need the World Rings to open it. Once Sonic and Shahra open it and go inside, they meet Erazor again. Erazor tries to convince Shahra to give him the World Rings. Shahra hesitates, but is about to do so because she wanted to go back to him (Shahra was hinted to be friends with Erazor or in love with him at one point). As master of the ring, Sonic orders Shahra to do what she believes is right, which stuns her in confusion. In the meantime, Erazor needs a certain sacrifice to utilize the full power of the World Rings - he needs to kill Sonic, who had collected the World Rings. As he made his strike, Shahra gets in the way to save Sonic. She slowly dies, begging for Sonic's forgiveness. With the power of the World Rings, Erazor transforms into Alf Layla wa-Layla (which translates to 1,000 and 1 Nights in Arabic), though he is incomplete because Sonic is still alive. Three of the World Rings (symbolizing Sadness, Rage, and Hatred) go into Sonic, transforming him into Darkspine Sonic. Darkspine Sonic then battles the transformed Erazor Djinn as the distant voice of Shahra guides him.

After the battle, Erazor reverts back to his normal form, as well as Sonic. Erazor boasts about being immortal, and that he'll always come back after defeat. However, Sonic uses the magic lamp given by Shahra, which was inactive at the time, and uses three wishes: to bring Shahra back to life, to restore the stories of the Arabian Nights, and to seal the evil being away in the lamp for the rest of time. Helpless against the mystic powers of the lamp, the defeated genie was forced to grant them all, and doomed himself to his eternal prison.

Fockewulf

Fockewulf is a blue male wolf who rides a flying bike, and is one of three hencmen of Wendy Witchcraft in Tails' Skypatrol. He appears to be named after Focke-Wulf, a German company known for manufacturing military aircraft for the Luftwaffe during the second World War. Fockewulf is the first boss of the game, fighting Tails in Rail Canyon, the second level (the first level has no boss). He fights by throwing grenades at Tails, which explode into four pieces on impact.

King Boom Boo

King Boom Boo is a boss character in the game Sonic Adventure 2. He is a giant ghost with a rainbow colored tongue and googly rainbow eyes. He is the frightning leader of the ghosts in the Death Chamber level, and like other ghosts in the Sonic universe (and most ghosts in general) he is repelled by light.

Knuckles encounters King Boom Boo while searching for keys to a door Sonic and the others were trying to get through. In the boss battle, Knuckles runs around a circular arena while followed by King Boom Boo who throws blue fireballs at him. Occasionally the ghost stops to spew a huge blue wave of flames, and during that time Knuckles must stun King Boom Boo by activating an hourglass which opens panels in the ceiling, making light fill the room. King Boom Boo has not appeared in any game since Sonic Adventure 2, and may have been destroyed after his defeat.

In Sonic X, King Boom Boo appears several episodes before the Sonic Adventure 2 adaptation. He haunts an ancient castle along with the smaller Boom Boos and Boos, but is trapped in it forever by Sonic and his friends (intentionally Amy). He is released again in the Sonic X comic book, but is stopped again.

Metal Knuckles

Just as Metal Sonic is the robot counterpart to Sonic, Metal Knuckles is the doppelgänger of Knuckles the Echidna. He has Knuckles' strength, with even greater speed. In terms of videogames, Metal Knuckles only appeared in Sonic R, where he was a faster version of Knuckles with a better gliding ability but with worse traction. Metal Knuckles was the character that went through the most shortcuts when played by the computer, so following this character was the easiest way to find the quickest route to the finish line.

A robotic version of Knuckles also an appearance as a boss in Sonic Advance. It is unknown whether or not it is the same robot, but it looks much different. This robot looks like a pink Knuckles with yellow gloves at first, and has virtually every move Knuckles has. After being struck three times his "armor" will fall off, revealing a metallic echidna with glowing red eyes underneath. In this "form", the robot is faster and can fire homing missiles from its mouth. After being attacked another three times, the robot explodes.

In the Archie-published Sonic the Hedgehog comics, the Freedom Fighters were once forced to roboticize Knuckles to combat a roboticized version of Sonic, and the robotic Knuckles was dubbed "Mecha Knuckles". After a drawn out battle, both combatants were eventually restored to normal.

In the British Sonic the Comic, a robotic Knuckles was a new version of the Metallixes, loyal only to Robotnik and with increased strength. It made its debut capturing Sonic from the Drakon Empire and then acting as a Prosecutor in Sonic's trial-by-combat, and it came very close to killing him until Tails destroyed it by sheer luck. The Metallix was only reused once, as Grimer used it to defeat Sonic so he could discover from him what happened to Robotnik; he then faked things so Sonic wouldn't remember this and instead think he beat Metallix. Notably, in its three clashes with Sonic, the Knuckles Metallix has never actually been defeated. It was shown at one point that Robotnik had a whole army of them, but they were never shown in use and may well have been eliminated when Sonic cleared out Flickies' Island.

Metal Knuckles's likelihood for a possible return is very low since he was only used once, and he is one of the few characters who did not appear in the poll at Sonic Channel.[3] Despite his small appearance in the series, he has become a well-received and popular character[citation needed], often considered one of the popular robot characters after Metal Sonic, Emerl, E-102 Gamma and E-123 Omega.

Tails Doll

The Tails Doll (also mistakenly called "Puppet Tails") is a doll version of Miles "Tails" Prower built by Dr. Eggman. It is a secret character in the game Sonic R, unlocked by finding the 5 tokens in the "Radical City" track and finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the race. Tails Doll has poor handling, average acceleration and average top speed. Its jumping abilities are quirky, too, since it cannot jump very high, but has a strange floating ability as its "air action". It is also the only character who can float over the water without slowing down after a period of time. Tails Doll is also one of the few characters who did not appear in the character poll by Sonic Channel, which featured multiple exceedingly obscure characters, such as Ray, Bean, and Bark.[3] It can be guessed he was created by Dr. Eggman as a robotic counterpart to Tails, much like Metal Knuckles and Metal Sonic, but used a plush body because Tails' fur cannot be duplicated by metal.

In Sonic Adventure, there are doll versions of Tails, as well as Sonic and Knuckles. They are however just practice dummies for Eggman's robots, and are not "intelligent" like Tails Doll. These dummies got their own collectable cards in Sonic Rivals, with the Tails one being named "Tails Doll".

Void

Void

Void is the imp-like villain from Sonic Shuffle. At the start of the game, Void shatters the mysterious Precioustone, which controls his world, Maginary World. Sonic and friends then set out on a quest to defeat him and repair the stone. Throughout the game, Void shows signs of depression and loneliness which touches the hearts of Sonic and his friends who, in turn, want to help him amidst the evilness within him. At the end of the game, it turns out that Void is needed for the balance in Maginary World, as he is the nothingness that gives people the ability to dream. As such, Sonic and his friends do not defeat him, and leave Maginary World knowing that Lumina and Void cancel each other out.

Void has some resemblance to Cosmo from Sonic X.

Wendy Witchcart

Wendy Witchcart is an old human witch who rides around in a fancy rail cart on an island she claims as her own, and is the main villain of Tails' Skypatrol. She says she is able to turn any dissenters into crystal. Her main lackies are Carrotia, Bearenger, and Fockewulf, and she also has a small army of robot drones. In the game, the goal of Tails is to free the island and its inhabitants from her tyranny.

Mama Robotnik

Dr. Robotnik's mother, who appears in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. She is kept in an asylum, though she escapes from time to time. Her insanity is enough to scare even Robotnik himself.

Metal Claus

Metal Claus is an unintelligent robot that "replaced" the real Santa in Sonic Christmas Blast. He was involved in an evil scheme to take over Christmas. He was made out of cardboard and doesn't really resemble Santa at all. Apparently, the only things he can say are Christmas-related things. For example, when Metal Claus, Scratch, and Grounder are attached to a giant magnet and Sonic releases it, Metal Claus yells "Happy holidays!". He was then destroyed when he hit the ground.

Trivia

  • The Battle Kukku Army, King Boom Boo, Void, and Bokkun were suggested as new characters for Archie comic issues following #134, but the plot lines in which they were featured appear to have been cut.
  • Metal Knuckles and Tails Doll, along with Metal Sonic and the cancelled character Metal Amy,[4] were slated for possible appearances in the Archie Comics, as was Omochao. However, the storyline in which they were featured was later scrapped.
