Pappachan Olivilaanu (transl. Pappachan is absconding) is a 2023 Indian Malayalam-language comedy film written and directed by Sinto Sunny. The film features Saiju Kurup in the titular role, with Darshana S. Nair, Srinda, Vijayaraghavan, Aju Varghese, Jagadish, Johny Antony, Kottayam Nazeer and Alexander Prasanth in prominent roles.[3][4] It is produced by Thomas Thiruvalla under the banner of Thomas Thiruvalla Films and co-produced by Vinod Shornur.[5][6] The film's plot revolves around Pappachan, a truck driver living in a hilly forest village.[7]

Production

Filming

The film's shooting started in Nadukani, near Kothamangalam, on 18 January 2023, and was completed near Kuttampuzha, Bhoothathankettu, and Neriamangalam.[5][8]

Ouseppachan composed the film's music and original background score, with lyrics written by BK Harinarayanan and Sinto Sunny.[9][10]

Theatrical

The film was initially planned to be released on 28 July 2023,[11] but was later postponed.[12] The film was released on 4 August 2023.[5]

Reception

Critical reception

Swathi P. Ajith, critic of Onmanorama, wrote, "The movie's humour serves as a compelling element that holds it together, leading the audience to overlook its drawbacks."[13]

Anandu Suresh of The Indian Express rated the film with 0.5 stars out of 5 and stated that, "Pappachan Olivilaanu is yet another Malayalam film that delves into the realm of experimentation, pushing the boundaries to see ‘how far is too far’, thus testing the patience of viewers to the very limit."[14]
