Shortcut

This page permits users to request, and bureaucrats to consider and carry out, the "usurpation" of usernames. This consists of renaming an existing dormant account in order to permit another user to adopt the name. If you are interested in usurping another username, please be advised that the account must have no edits or log entries (except in the username creation log) to qualify for usurpation.

Please do not request usurpation if your user account is less than several months old, or barely used. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users.

Process

Please follow these instructions carefully to ensure that the process runs efficiently. Malformed requests may be rejected.

  • Be sure the account you wish to usurp has no edits or log entries, as described above.
  • Leave a message on the talk page of the target account (preferably of the form {{subst:usurpation requested}} ~~~~) notifying the user of your request.
  • Please do not e-mail the target account yourself. If this becomes necessary, a bureaucrat or other designated user will do it.
  • Copy and paste the following text into the bottom of the section on this page for today's date.
{{subst:usurp|Name_To_Usurp|Current_Name}} ~~~~
Replace "Name_To_Usurp" with the username you wish to usurp, and "Current_Name" with your current username. You may include some reason for the change if you wish. Be sure you are logged in under your current username. Save the page.
  • If the owner of the target account does not object within seven days, a bureaucrat will fulfill your request. Mark the date, so you will not be surprised when you find yourself unable to log in to your old account.

  • Oh, Now I for the first time see that user SHL actually HAS made edits. Have tried in all ways to find the edits, both obviously missed that. Truly sorry for that.   • You should note that changing your username in this fashion will still allow everyone to see your real name, since the change will be publicly logged. If you just don't want to your name to be immediately visible, this sort of change is fine, but if you have an important reason to be anonymous, such as being at risk of off-wiki harassment for editing in controversial areas, then going this route is probably a bad idea. Just start a second account instead, and don't do anything to link the two. (I hope that my leaving this comment here is appropriate - something like this should probably be noted whenever someone gives this as a reason, and it might be a good idea to feature this issue more prominently in the instructions). --Philosophus T 08:54, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kyoko ← Tachikoma

(copied from CUU talk page) Hello, some months back, another user (User:Randfan) set up the account User:Kyoko as a means to guard against impersonation of me, without asking me first. I've been giving it some thought, and I think I'd like to move my account to there, because I'm getting tired of being called "Tachikoma". I think Randfan created the Kyoko account as a new page, the same way a new article is created, i.e. without making a password first.

I currently have a number of subpages that I would also like transferred to the Kyoko account. I plan on changing the subpages (anti-vandalism scripts, etc.) once they are there. I also plan on recreating the Tachikoma account for redirection towards the Kyoko account. That way, my old talk page messages will point to the new account. A few things: I think Randfan created the User:Kyoko account in November or so, by typing in "User:Kyoko" in the search box, and then creating it as if it were an article. He then made the user and talk pages into redirects to my Tachikoma account. As for the subpages, I use a modified version of Lupin's vandal-whacking script, which calls to customized vandalism warnings within my userspace. I expect that I will have to change the code of this script and various other pages in my userspace. It's no big deal, just a little tedious to do. --Kyoko 12:50, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I must confess that I do not have a "large amount" of edits, but I am working to change that! The joys of being an undergrad/graduate student... The top of the page mentioned "reasonably well-established users" which I believe that I qualify under: I've been a registered user since December 2005, and I think that my contributions show a reasonable intent to continue improving and contributing to Wikipedia. As of this timestamp, you have 62 edits, per Flcelloguy's Tool. However, there is no set barrier for usurpations; whether 60 edits is enough or not is up to the bureaucrat's discretion. Instructions to bureaucrats

  • Accounts should be renamed to "Username (usurped)" -- this is intuitive and is unlikely ever to be a desired account name. The links labeled '1' and '2' will automatically fill out the user renaming interface with the proper information.
  • If a user consents to have his account usurped, the request may be fulfilled immediately, rather than after the full waiting period.
  • Mark completed requests with {{done}} and rejected requests with {{not done}}. A bot will archive them.
