WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Deadline 3(Week 4) FAN XINRU

Dear professor,I completed my homework on about article citation of Media Trends and Globalization. You can check my work from below the link Jzhdylb (talk) 12:37, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jzhdylb That's a good start, but please explain how the reference added is WP:RELIABLE. See WP:BAIDU first. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 11:47, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear professor, I have modified my homework, please check itNo Party for Cao Dong Jzhdylb (talk) 04:10, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jzhdylb I am afraid that content is also too low quality to be allowed to be published on Wikipedia, it seems like poor translation of a social media post. The content (language, style) is not encyclopedic and as such not allowed on Wikipedia. If you want to add content, please ensure it is referenced to reliable sources: newspaper articles, scholarly articles or books. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:08, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear professor, I revised my homework, please check it [1] Jzhdylb (talk) 13:06, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Cyprian Norwid

On 26 September 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cyprian Norwid, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the 19th-century poet Cyprian Norwid (pictured), now recognized as one of the most important Polish poets, led a poverty-stricken life and his works were rarely appreciated until decades after his death? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cyprian Norwid. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Cyprian Norwid), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Deadline 3 : Week 5 - ZHANG RUIQING

Dear professor. This is my topic Yuhuan from Understanding Small and Big Data. I finished the Deadline 3,you can check my work from here. Please Check,Thank you! Rachel.zrq (talk) 04:53, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Rachel.zrq Very good. Over the next few weeks, try to add more listings as right now the see/do look very bare. Some pictures would be good too. You can upload your own for extra credit. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:14, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ps. Are those 4A or 5A attractions? AAAAA Tourist Attractions of China talks about 5A? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 09:15, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cyprian Norwid

You said that Norwid chose his middle names during a Confirmation in 1945. Given the obvious typo, I have changed it to 1845, but would like to confirm that was in fact the actual date. – John M Wolfson (talk • contribs) 12:22, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@John M Wolfson Thanks, that is of course correct. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:34, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Good evening Professor, I have completed my ten English Wiki voyage edits this week, here is the link. And I have completed my ten Chinese Wiki voyage edits this week, here is the link. Please check it.ThankyouAYAO32269 (talk) 14:11, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@AYAO32269 Good start. Note you have recived some advice at https://zh.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User_talk:AYAO32269 - it would be good to read it and reply to it. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:45, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Deadline 3 : Week 5 -LIN ZIYU

professor. I'm LIN ZIYU I have completed over a dozen edits for Wikipedia and Wikivoyage with my team members, please check them out. Here is the link;Wikipedia and Wikivoyage. Wishing you a wonderful day! Linziyu1823 (talk) 12:21, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Linziyu1823 Good. I've removed some information from understand that seems more relevant to Wikipedia than Wikivoyage (see my edit summary there). Instead, you should add few sentences about history of the city and about why tourists may want to go to there - what are the best tourist attractions in the city and nearby?
Well done expanding the article, we will of course need to add more listings / map / pictures before the project is finished. Good job so far! Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:52, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Weekly wiki edits-LIN ZIYU

Good evening Professor, I have completed my ten English Wiki voyage edits this week, here is the link. Please check it.Thankyou Linziyu1823 (talk) 12:23, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Linziyu1823 Ok. The content you have added is good. But in this series of edits you accidentally damaged the 'get around' heading - please restore it. You also deleted the listing for Xichang Satellite Launch Center - why? The heading for 'Do' was also deleted. Please restore such content and be careful in the future not to remove useful parts of the article. Final note: you removed the space in 6 hours changing it to 6hours, creating a typo. Again, please be careful - your edits should improve the article. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:59, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

September 2023

FYI the references to Richard C. Lukas have started to be deleted from the articles in french-language Wikipedia thanks to Shira Klein and Jan Grabowski, according to w:fr:Discussion Portail:Shoah#Tripotages de l'historiographie sur la Shoah en Pologne. Visite fortuitement prolongée (talk) 19:40, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for alerting me to this sad development. Not much I can do if the French Wikipedians want to damage their articles since my French is too poor to take part in that discussion in any serious fashion. @Elinruby. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:14, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PS. I did make some comments using machine translation, I hope they are readable. But even if I can comment now and then, I can hardly edit articles. It would be bad form for me to just come over to fr wiki to edit war :P I trust in the long run, French Wikipedians will do what is best for the project. Btw, @Visite fortuitement prolongée, have you read my User:Piotrus/Response? If you are interested in this topic, check it out. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:44, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Not only i have read User:Piotrus/Response, but i made suggestion of improvement in its talk page. Visite fortuitement prolongée (talk) 14:36, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Visite fortuitement prolongée Ah, indeed, thankis. Btw, where was Lukas removed from on fr wiki, exactly? I checked recent changes and they don't seem problematic - certainly some errors exist in related articles there (just like they did or still do here) and need to be corrected. Outstide advertising low quality scholarship/slander here, I am not seeing any damage done to fr wiki, and arguably some recent edits there are probably helpful (removing unrererenced content/errors/etc.). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:57, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
«Btw, where was Lukas removed from on fr wiki, exactly?» => I don't know («according to»). You can watch recent changes using
Also please notice that those wikipedians have no likely finished removals of Lukas. They claim having started and they plan to continue. As of today, Lukas is still referenced in several articles, such

PS: I found the following removals of Lukas thanks to comments in w:fr:Discussion Portail:Shoah
Visite fortuitement prolongée (talk) 14:09, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And fr:Discussion:Crimes_nazis_contre_la_nation_polonaise/Admissibilité (translation of Nazi crimes against the Polish nation was deleted... presumably because the politically correct view is now that Poles were Nazis, not victims of Nazism?). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:26, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Visite fortuitement prolongée À mon avis, cette réaction est tout à fait excessive et inappropriée. Voir par exemple ce livre publié par le United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, qui recommande spécifiquement Lukas. Andreas JN466 13:40, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Andreas i am glad/praised that you ping me. If you want stories about academic spouting deadly bullshit, as evidence that Wikipedia should not blindly trust Jan Grabowski or any academic, i can tell you about Raoultella Didier Raoult and Robert Wistrich. Also do you know https://wikipediasucks.co/ ? It is a website dedicaced to criticism of Wikipedia which often endorse far-right criticism of Wikipedia. Visite fortuitement prolongée (talk) 14:36, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh. I will look. No guarantees. They tell a good story Elinruby (talk) 01:19, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Also w:fr:Discussion Portail:Shoah#Principaux articles à revoir. From Bédévore: «Vous rappliquez ici, alors que vous écrivez très rarement sur fr-wp, uniquement parce qu'une utilisatrice bannie de fr-wp (VFP)» => I am not banned from https://fr.wikipedia.org/ I do not like lies, but thank you for helping my case. Aslo Piotrus's involvment is very relevant, you would know this if you had read the mentionned articles. Visite fortuitement prolongée (talk) 12:03, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Visite fortuitement prolongée Not particularly relevant, but you are banned from fr wiki from what I see here? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:11, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Since more than 10 years the wikipedians at https://fr.wikipedia.org/ carefully distinguish ban and indefinite block. I suffer the later but not the former. Visite fortuitement prolongée (talk) 13:05, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fair. That said, most people on en or anywhere else will fail to see the difference. Out of curiosity, you don't care to try to get it reversed? WP:OFFER? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:09, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I do care. Visite fortuitement prolongée (talk) 15:13, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
