Knighthoods and medals are a European, not a Laotian tradition. The French colonial regime introduced the Laotians to these honors. The first knighthood founded by a Laotian king dates from 1909. Unlike the Royal Order of Cambodia and the Order of the Dragon of Annam of the Empire of Vietnam, the French did not take possession of the indigenous Laotian knighthood.

Orders of Knighthood in the Colonial Period

The Grand Order of the Million Elephants and the White Parasol (Lao: "Somdetch Pha Itsariyaphon Lan Xang Hom Khao")

  • The Order of Merit for Education (Lao: "Itsarriyaphon Khunnawuthi Haeng Kankasikan")
  • The Order of Merit for Agriculture (Lao: "Itsarriyaphon Sowathara Haeng Kankasikan")
  • The Order of Female Merit (Lao: "Itsarriyaphon Sati Suphaphon")
  • The Order of the Government of Sisavang Vong
  • The Order of the Reign of Savang Vatthana

Orders of the Lao People's Democratic Republic

Laos followed the Soviet example and the tradition of the socialist orders by one degree.

The Order of the Gold Star or Order of the Hero of the Lao People's Democratic Republic. The institution of the title "Hero of... " is a legacy of the period when the country was part of the Soviet Union.[1]
