On 3 December 2023, Mount Marapi, a complex volcano on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, erupted, sending ash as high as 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) into the air, and depositing high amounts of volcanic ash in nearby districts.[1] Eleven hikers were found dead near the crater of the volcano, while several other hikers went missing.[3]
Background
As the most active complex volcano in West Sumatra, and in proximity to populated areas, the volcano is a significant hazard.[4] Since 2011, the volcano has been at the level II (Waspada) of a four-tier alert system set up by the Indonesian volcanological agency.[5] A significant eruption occurred in 1979,[6] then in the course of April−May 2018 ashfalls to the southeast occurred.[7]
Eruption
On 3 December 2023, Mount Marapi erupted. The eruption sent ash as high as 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) into the air, and high amounts of volcanic ash were deposited in nearby districts.[1] As of 5 December, there are total of 46 eruptions and 66 blasts observed on 3−4 December from the volcano's observation post.[8]
Casualties
The eruption occurred while many climbers were at the mountain's slopes. Out of 75 hikers who climbed the mountain on 2 December, 49 were evacuated, three were found alive and rescued, 11 were found dead, and 12 are still missing.[3] The fatalities were found near the crater of the volcano, while the search for other missing hikers has been interrupted by sporadic eruptions.[3]
Response
In response to the eruption, local authorities prohibited any activity within 3 kilometres of the volcano. Masks were distributed to residents, who were encouraged to stay home.[1]
As of 5 December, the evacuation process is still ongoing, while out of 11 fatalities found, eight of them are yet to be evacuated from the mountain.[9]
