Ambassador Airways is a former airline that was founded in 1992.
Following the collapse of Air Europe, there were capacity shortages amongst British tour operators and the airline founders hoped that there would be realistic chances of success for a new charter company.
Delivery positions were quickly secured for two Boeing 757s, even though the necessary licensing procedures had not been completed. As the airline did not have its own operating licence, two 757’s from Caledonian Airways were used. Operating approval followed in the spring of 1993, with the first flight on May 21, 1993.
From Newcastle, London Gatwick and Glasgow flights were mainly operated to Cyprus and Greece but other Mediterranean destinations were frequently visited, as well as Birmingham and Manchester, England.
In the summer of 1994 the fleet consisted of four 757s and two 737s. Also, two Airbus A320s were operated exclusively for the tour operator Goldcrest.
However, on November 28, 1994 Ambassador ceased flying. The tour operator Best Travel(Greciana/Cypriana Holidays), heavily associated with the airline, went bankrupt. The business of another tour operator, Inspirations, was lost through its purchase of Caledonian Airways.
The airline had hoped to start long haul operations in the summer of 1995 using a leased Tri-Star aircraft, but no such operations were undertaken.
