After his father’s tragic death after getting too close to a tornado while storm chasing, a teenage Will Brody (Daniel Diemer) struggles to connect with his ex-scientist mom who wants nothing but to forget her husband and her storm chasing past. The troubled teen finds a machine his parents invented to find the heartbeat of the storm and takes it to school on a day ripe for a storm before getting in trouble for the bomb-looking machine. When he returns home he gets mail from his parents old friend who he calls his Uncle Roy (Skeet Ulrich). This sets off the idea for the adventure of a lifetime as he attempts to get Roy to help him get his mom back into storm chasing, noting that she cleans houses now and is way too smart for that. Roy is a little busy with his job as an employee of a storm tour company owned by a man named Zane (Alec Baldwin) who is a money-hungry thrill seeker, and Roy ends up taking teenage Will on a storm tour. Will’s mom realizes her child is missing and calls the police who say they cannot do anything. She figures out he is with her old friend and sets out with Will’s love interest to go find him. While on the tour, Zane makes the group go into a field in the storm tour van where they end up getting stuck and the van gets beaten up by the storm, shattering its windows and creating large dents in its roof. They end up getting back to civilization and get another van before stopping at a gas station so they can get fuel for their next chase. While at the gas station, another watch is issued and the storm chasers all leave to go chase. Will’s storm chasing group leaves without him and he goes into the parking lot to see the storm. He notices that his popcorn flies straight into the air, meaning that the storm is on top of him and he runs to find shelter, finding that the gas station attendant locked the door. He hides in a photo booth and the storm barrels down on him but leaves shortly after cracking the glass of the booth. Shortly after, news casters come around to question him about his experience noting that he is the son of the famous storm chaser who died 10 years ago. Zane uses this to try to spark more business for his storm tour company but Roy punches him in the face, taking will to go see the old storm lab equipment before taking will to see another storm. After a heart to heart, Roy and Will go to sleep in a motel, but Will ends up leaving to go chat with some other storm chasers who offer him beer. Zane shows up and tries to convince Will to storm chase like his dad, saying that his dad was just a thrill seeker like him. The next morning, Will and Roy go to a restaurant to wait for his mom and see that another storm is brewing that will be really bad. Roy tells Will no and that they have to wait for his mom and after Roy steps away, Will immediately gets up and leaves to find Zane who reluctantly agrees to take the teen on the chase. They take two foreign tourists to the storm and end up going on a dirt road again. Will takes his parents machine and tries to find the heartbeat of the storm and is successful, but the storm gets right on top of him as he ignores Zane who beeps the horn of the van at him to get his attention. Will runs and gets in the van which they find is stuck in the mud again so Zane gets out to push. They successfully get the van unstuck but Zane is swept away by the tornado. Will, who does not know how to drive, drives backwards down the road to get out of the storm. While this is happening Roy, Will’s mom and Harper hop into another storm chasing vehicle to go find Will and end up meeting him. They drive to the nearest shelter where they encounter the tornado again and do not make it into the shelter on time so the four have to go hide in a pool. They survive the storm and the next morning they collect themselves and Harper and Will kiss while mom and Roy watch from afar. |
